January 27, 2015 Heidi helped us with designing and decorating my living room area and the upstairs wall space. This project encompassed purchasing products and furniture, supervising the installation, and making the finishing touches. Heidi is incredibly talented at ‘pulling the space together’ and executing on the home owners’ vision. She is incredibly thorough and creative- we had several art pieces that did not fit in standard frames and custom frames would have taken too long and expensive. She created borders with different color to create a dual border frames and the art and photos look amazing. Another thing that impressed me about Heidi is her ability to recommend various items at different price points and recommending where I should spend a little extra for quality vs. where I don’t have. The finished living room area and the walls look amazing and we highly recommend Heidi. We will definitely be making personal recommendations to our friends and family if and when they need this type of service. Kristie F.

I have never worked with an interior designer before so I had no clue what to expect or if I could even afford one. I was looking for ideas for a floor plan for my bathroom reno. Lidia came to my house and explained the process in detail. For $500.00 she and her assistant came in and took measurements of my bathroom. From there she came up with 4 different floor plans. After I chose the one I liked the best, she gave me permit drawings for the town. Lidea then contacted me and we went shopping for tile ideas. There were a couple of floor tiles that she picked out that I wasn't really fond of until she coordinated it with an accent tile. WOW! I fell in love with it. She definitely has a talent with design. I would recommend her services to anyone.

We hired Juliana, owner of Creative Interiors, on the recommendation from a person that we worked with. This person contracted with Juliana to redecorate the bedroom and living room in their home. They were thrilled with the results, and commented that Juliana did an exceptionally great job. When we renovated our home, Juliana and I went shopping for fabrics for new drapes for the house; new bed comforters; and fabrics for sofas and chairs that we wanted recovered. She is a wealth of information about decorating, and she brought us to shops that we would not have been familiar with without Juliana's help. We also went to an art gallery with her, and we bought a couple of prints and had them framed. Juliana was amazing with the help she gave us choosing frames that looked the best with the prints we chose. She put 100% into helping us redecorate our house. She came to our house and helped us hang the framed prints , explaining the lighting in the rooms and the pros and cons of putting the prints on certain walls. The results were beautiful because of Juliana. Another thing that we really appreciated about her is that she taught us so much about decorating. She explained everything to us as we shopped. No matter how many questions we had, Juliana always had the answers. Juliana is a kind and caring person. She is very easy to work with. She has unending amounts of patience, and accommodated all of our needs. Juliana never cancelled an appointment with us, she was always on time, and her help was invaluable. The characteristic in Juliana that we appreciate so much is her honesty. She never tried to persuade us to purchase anything we did not like. She insisted that we make the final decisions on all purchases. Juliana's words to us were: "At the end of the day, you live in the house and you have to be happy with it." We were happy when it was completed and we still are grateful that we met and worked with Creative Interiors.

Sarah has an amazing gift. We hired her several months ago, to guide us through a complete overhaul of our entire house, one room at a time. Initially, we had several designers come up with a concept so we could choose the best one, and hands-down, we chose Sarah because had the best design concept. After asking us questions, she was able to clearly articulate what it was that we wanted and the overall look we were going for. Working with her has been extremely easy. She communicates well, is thorough, detailed oriented, and overall has exceeded all of our expectations.

I can't say enough about Maureen and her team! We recently sold our home and MLT Design Group was there for us through the whole process, They made great suggestions about what we needed to do to get our home in the best possible shape to sell it for the best price. They did excellent work and by the time they were finished we didn't want to leave!! They were professional, punctual, and went above and beyond throughout the job. Our 20 year old home looked brand new and when Maureen and her team finished staging it we couldn't believe the transformation. I highly recommend them!

Our house was a 1955 ranch-style house with 3 bedrooms, one bath, kitchen, and living/dining room that we moved into in 1995. We had been looking to add a second bathroom and had originally worked with an architect from NH to do a modest front and rear bump out to give us more room to fit in a second bathroom. This architect had to withdraw from the job and recommended David Kinsella of TBC. David initially made some modest changes to the plan that made sense. After some further discussion, in which my wife and I raised the possibility of a larger scale project to modernize the style of the house, David developed a plan that essentially rebuilt the house except for our previously remodeled kitchen and original foundation. This new plan converted our house into modern design with a more open floor plan, completely new roof line, loft space, re-finished basement (and the second bathroom). David was able to fit this into an only slightly expanded footprint in order to comply with town regulations. Throughout the process, David kept our budget in mind and would typically present different price options for us to choose from to allow us to come up with a reasonable comprise between price with style. In addition TBC worked with the town to make sure our design stayed within our zoning and conservation restrictions. After deciding to go ahead with the project, we interviewed several contractors and decided that TBC brought us the best value for our money and would also allow David to oversee the project as needed. We started the project in June 2011 and completed the project in May 2012. The project did take several months longer than expected, but did stay on budget. The major problem that occurred that delayed the project was that in the summer of 2011, the original subcontracted framers were being sent to other jobs by their boss even though TBC was told they would be coming to our job. Hence, instead of working full time on our job, they were working less than half time. Eventually TBC had to fire them and find a new contractor to step in. At the time we felt that TBC should have replaced them sooner, but perhaps this was difficult due to contractual obligations. (We also found this first group of framers were slobs who did not have much regard for the fact that we were still living in the house.) By the end of summer 2011, the house was not completely framed and roofed and number of rain storms (including hurricane Irene) slowed down progress further. In mid-October we were still living in the part of the house and we agreed at this point that we would move out to allow for a more efficient work flow. From this point construction generally proceeded ahead, except for a few delays do to weather and scheduling conflicts that arose for other subcontractors, no doubt due to the significant delay caused by the no-show framers. In the end the house is beautiful and works for us better than we could have imagined. While the house has not expanded much in terms of square feet, the open floor plan and high ceiling/roof line combined with increased natural lighting gives a much more expansive feeling inside. From the curb, the house has modern angular green metal roof with cedar siding and one has to look hard to find any resemblance to the original house. At the completion of of the project, TBC was very responsive to completing punch-list items and other minor issues that arose. While my wife and I certainly had stressful times during the renovation (and certainly did a lot of second guessing our decision to renovate rather than move), we always felt that David had a personal interest in getting the job done correctly and making sure that we were happy in the end. In that regard, David was very accessible by email or phone before, during, and after the work. In summary, David Kinsella provided the creativity to design a renovation plan that was truly transforming for our house and TBC was then able to see the plan through to successful completion.

This was one of the best Home Remodeling experiences we have ever had. We worked with Ely Jimenez of Del Cid Design and Construction. Ely does the best workmanship we have ever seen. He is wonderfully communicative and professional. He provided us with photographs of every single detail that he worked with. He was very flexible, patient, and creative. He transformed our old-fashioned bathroom into a beautiful, modern bathroom. He somehow fit a large, working washer and dryer into a closet. He is an excellent general contractor who works well with multiple sub-contractors. We 100% recommend Del Cid Design and Construction for any home remodeling task, no matter how big or small. John Maciejowski is the ultimate, talented professional. We recently gutted and remodeled both a master and guest bathroom. John created the look we were going for and the bathrooms came out great. He listened to what we wanted, took us on store and factory tours to pick out the marble, granite, tile, fixtures, vanities and paint colors. Everything fits together so perfectly. We love the outcome. John is very detailed and follows through on everything. You would be wise to pick John for your next remodeling or refurbishing project. We have worked with John 2 other times to refurbish our living room and bedrooms. The furniture, artwork and overall color schemes have always come out first rate!!

Casey exhibits a level of understanding, professionalism and courtesy that is refreshing and comforting. We enlisted Casey to develop plans to remodel our recently purchased home in 2013 and she far surpassed our expectations. She provided several reasonable options within our budget that fit our lifestyle, and generated plans that our town and GC felt were detailed and precise. My husband and I could not be more happy with our home and we are so very lucky to have had the experience we did working with Casey. We highly recommend her for any architectural and design needs you might need.

My experience with Schickel Interiors was absolutely amazing. This was my first time working with a professional and I really needed help :). I contacted the team at Schickel to help with my living room and bedroom in my new apartment. The response almost instant when I first contacted them! Hannah did a great job of asking me questions and showing me sample, giving me the options I needed to make sure the rooms fit to my personality and my liking. We made changes and adjustments throughout the process and Hannah was always punctual and respectful - the team is really easy to communicate with. Another note; I had a pretty small timeline to work with and the team really pushed to make my dream a reality in such a small amount of time. I never thought I'd say this but...I can't wait to move again so that Schickel Interiors can design and implement my new space :)

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
