J Oliveira Design Build is one of the best I have ever worked with. I hired them to paint most a condo that I bought, and they did such an amazing job. Fernando is punctual, kind, affordable, and most importantly, a talented and meticulous painter. The condo looks flawless. Fernando went above and beyond to make sure that everything looked perfect and even installed light fixtures and a bathroom cabinet. He also cleaned the condo as well and did a spectacular job. The condo looks fantastic and if I ever need painting or handyman work completed again, he is the only person I will call. I highly recommend J Oliveira Design Build to anybody looking for their home or business to be painted and/or cleaned.

I consulted with Jennifer to help identify my personal style to add personality to my home. I also wanted her input on furniture placement and over-all flow of my home. I appreciated that she showed up exactly on time and truly listened to what I was telling her. I liked that her ideas were in line with my current budget and she gave me specific ideas to implement. I’d had been looking to replace a storage dresser in my kitchen, and Jennifer’s suggestions for the piece were not only a cost savings for me but will bring life back into the piece. I’m excited to implement all of Jennifer's ideas. Which is why I’m glad she gave me all her recommendations in writing so I can refer to them anytime. I hope the opportunity arises for me to work with her again in the future.

Will worked on the design for a new garage for us with a studio/office on the second floor. The building features a simple but elegant stairway, clean, well proportioned lines, and an airy, sunny, living area. It has an Arts and Craft style and also features a bathroom, small kitchen and detailed woodwork throughout. The finished project is so much more than I had hoped for and it really is a joy to be in the space! I was impressed by many aspects of the service. Most notably, the dedication, enthusiasm and approach to problem solving of the architect. Will had great vision for this design; he was extremely creative in his thinking, and also had expert technical skills in implementing the design. The project took about 18 months from establishing the first concept ideas to finishing the building. Will stayed "on top" of things insuring that the project moved forward and was completed in a timely fashion. In summary, Will's excellent skills, organization, and professionalism made working with him a pleasure.

January 27, 2015 Heidi helped us with designing and decorating my living room area and the upstairs wall space. This project encompassed purchasing products and furniture, supervising the installation, and making the finishing touches. Heidi is incredibly talented at ‘pulling the space together’ and executing on the home owners’ vision. She is incredibly thorough and creative- we had several art pieces that did not fit in standard frames and custom frames would have taken too long and expensive. She created borders with different color to create a dual border frames and the art and photos look amazing. Another thing that impressed me about Heidi is her ability to recommend various items at different price points and recommending where I should spend a little extra for quality vs. where I don’t have. The finished living room area and the walls look amazing and we highly recommend Heidi. We will definitely be making personal recommendations to our friends and family if and when they need this type of service. Kristie F.

Steve has done multiple projects for us both big and small. He added a downstairs bathroom off the kitchen by converting half of the back porch. Steve has also done multiple adjustments to our kitchen cabinet configurations when we had new appliances and has installed a new back splash. He also installed new railings on the front porch. Steve does excellent work, is thorough, cleans up each day and offers suggestions when appropriate. He is very personable and he is our first call when we have any project. If he can't do it (very rarely), he will give us a recommendation. Can't say enough good things about Steve.

Vicki is the best of the best. We have utilized interior designers before, all with good results, but Vicki is in a class by herself. Her personality, tireless worth ethic, eye for detail, wonderful sense of taste, and her commitment to complete the project that matches your vision to the highest of expectations are all core values of both her personal and professional principles. Vicki gets our highest of recommendations.

Good listener, and--perhaps even better--knowledgeable about the nuts and bolts of building. In my experience, people who know firsthand how things are put together, and how the design and construction worlds interact, make the best architects. Humberto is one of those people and he made a difference with our kitchen renovation, great attention to detail and more importantly to our budget. Highly recommended. Manuel Delgado Charlestown MA

What’s not to love! So professional, loves what she does which yu can clearly see, has an eye for design, and also very knowledgeable. I had no idea that there were so many options when it came to window treatments. Styles, designs, colors! She guided me through the whole process, which was very helpful. She brought over samples so I could actually see and feel what I’d be purchasing which is huge because I like to know what I’m going to get. And install, she does that too! I am sooo happy and so pleased with Judee and would definitely recommend her.

I am having a total renovation done on my bathroom and Avery Russell was an excellent guide, helping me pick out all the fixtures necessary. She then guided me in the selection of tile for the floor and shower, the countertop for the sinks and the type of finish for the cabinets for the sinks and cupboards. I could not have done this alone and I am thrilled with my new bathroom. E. McCrudden

This was one of the best Home Remodeling experiences we have ever had. We worked with Ely Jimenez of Del Cid Design and Construction. Ely does the best workmanship we have ever seen. He is wonderfully communicative and professional. He provided us with photographs of every single detail that he worked with. He was very flexible, patient, and creative. He transformed our old-fashioned bathroom into a beautiful, modern bathroom. He somehow fit a large, working washer and dryer into a closet. He is an excellent general contractor who works well with multiple sub-contractors. We 100% recommend Del Cid Design and Construction for any home remodeling task, no matter how big or small. John Maciejowski is the ultimate, talented professional. We recently gutted and remodeled both a master and guest bathroom. John created the look we were going for and the bathrooms came out great. He listened to what we wanted, took us on store and factory tours to pick out the marble, granite, tile, fixtures, vanities and paint colors. Everything fits together so perfectly. We love the outcome. John is very detailed and follows through on everything. You would be wise to pick John for your next remodeling or refurbishing project. We have worked with John 2 other times to refurbish our living room and bedrooms. The furniture, artwork and overall color schemes have always come out first rate!!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

    How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
