I have a 1y/o yorkshire and maltese mixed dog with serious separation anxiety and some behavior issues. I was going through the dog trainers in my area and Jennifer caught my attention immediately- the review was almost 100% positive, saying how helpful and responsive she is. We scheduled a meeting and I ended up training & boarding my dog with her for about a month. The result was impressive: he's crate trained, he becomes quiet in the car, no more excessive barking... She even found out his favorite raw food and changed his diet...He used to have kibbles and wouldn't eat much every day.. Now he finishes every meal within 2 mins! He looks super healthy now!!! I'm definitely gonna board my dog with her again. Training and boarding are both amazing!!! SHE'S THE BEST!!

Peter was very helpful. He specifically helped us with our puppy's barking, leash manners and hyperactive behavior. We've had puppy training with our dog at Petsmart but hired Peter to help with these small problem areas and he helped us a lot in just 1 hour. I'd definitely hire him again if need be.

Lisa provided help with our 8 month old puppy with behavior training. She is a dog whisper. Our puppy is now super responsive to commands, this all after one week with Lisa. Lisa is kind and has a great reward based approach with training. Puppy is a breeze to walk, sits when we stop and stays put for almost 5 minutes now. He is consistently listening for commands verse making his own decisions. We are so impressed! If you are looking for confidence building in both your dog and yourself, Lisa is your trainer. She not only puts the time in with our puppy but takes time to make sure you know the commands, how to work consistently with them and follow through with each family member. In addition, Lisa has sent 2 follow up emails checking on his/our progress. Can't thank her enough!

Not only does he show you how to work with your dogs but he is a great person and willing to answer any question and he also doesn’t talk down to you or talk you like your stupid which was my experience with other trainers.

I adopted my 2 year old dog Kayla only 3 months ago and Mike, along with help from his 2 wonderful dogs, has helped us reach several milestones: teaching her to get in the car, introducing her to the dog park experience, learning to walk on the leash, and most importantly, building up my confidence so I can help Kayla build up hers. I highly recommend his services.

We hired Rebecca to help us with our new boxer puppy and his behavioral issues. She taught us clicker training for reinforcement of positive behavior and negative punishment for addressing the behavioral issues. She arrived promptly for each training session and often sent helpful tips and videos after each session. She even helped us to find a group puppy class to help socialize him. We were glad to find her and recommend her for your individual puppy training needs.

My girlfriend and I rescued our puppy coming up on a year ago and we have been bringing her to Lucky Dog for about 9 months or so. Hands down, the staff here is the friendliest and most helpful group of people! I could tell immediately how much they take pride in being amazing at what they do. They know their customers(pets as well as humans) by name, they're always cheerful and go above and beyond every single time we're there. They evaluate the dogs and make sure they're kept with others that they'll get along with, they have a webcam service that lets you watch your doggo if you want, and they have TONS of stuff available in their retail section as well from treats to food to toys and clothing. They also offer boarding and their prices are worth every cent because we know our pupper will be extremely well taken care of! If you're hesitant about finding a place for your little furball, have no fear, LUCKY DOG IS HERE!

I was extremely nervous about dropping my dog off with a stranger. Lucky for me, it turned out that I was able to watch videos of Becca (our trainer) training other dogs for weeks before I dropped off my girl. Throughout the two week board and train, Becca answered every single text from me, sent videos and pics and kept me completely updated on all aspects of our pup's journey. During the transition period, she spent 2.5 hours showing us everything that Nala had learned and made sure that my husband and I could operate the equipment, use the same commands and elicit the same reactions from her. Becca was patient, extremely knowledgeable and quite obviously LOVES dogs. I am looking forward to seeing how far we can take our smart pup now that we have a better understanding of how to work with her. THANK YOU!!!! You all are the BEST!

Noelle was great! We came to her for aggression and destructive behavior, and she surpassed everything we expected. We got Riley back a whole new dog!! She came to our house during training and coached us through her training process. We could not be happier with her and the care and training of our dog. I'd give her 6 stars if I could!

We couldn't be any more pleased with our training from Ken at Caliber K-9 and would highly recommend him to anyone looking for training for their dogs. We have a 4 year old Boxer mix named Wrigley who started nipping at our 8 and 11 year old children about the time that I got pregnant. With twins on the way, we needed a solution for our dog quickly. We interviewed multiple trainers including a few very highly rated trainers in Boston. We were told a variety of things about our dog including that the only option was the put him down. My husband and I were at a loss of what to do and didn't have a good feeling about what anyone was telling us. And then Ken came over for a free evaluation. He was the only trainer to focus on Wrigley just as much as us. This made a huge impression on us, along with Ken's approach and dedication. We decided to hire Ken on the spot without needing to discuss it privately. I'm writing this during our fifth week of training and our dog isn't even home for good yet. I hope this shows how much we would recommend Ken. Wrigley was a challenge for him due to the "squirrels in his head" and his lack of drive. We feel confident that we will be able to take over when Wrigley comes home and continue onto a better path with Wrigley in our home. Ken has boosted his confidence, addressed many handling issues, taught him obedience and taught us and our children how to continue the work at home. Wrigley came home for a night's stay this week and things were great during the trial run. The other trainers sold an idea of a guaranteed fix and then would send your dog home. This just wasn't realistic for our situation. Ken has offered to keep Wrigley for an extra week at no cost in order to have a smoother transition when coming home. We've also discussed additional ways that Ken can help us in the months to come including helping me take Wrigley to an anxiety-fueled vet appt., boarding Wrigley when our twins come and helping to introduce Wrigley to the new babies. Also, the one-on-one attention that your dog would get with Ken is far and above what anyone else is offering! I feel like Ken could double his price and still be worth it compared to the others we interviewed. We feel so incredibly fortunate that Ken was available when we needed his help. He's also a friend now for many years to come. You won't be disappointed in hiring him.

Working with Paws N' Learn Dog Obedience has got to be one of the best decisions I've made thus far. Some of the things I loved was the punctuality, professionalism, the work quality and much more. I just got a puppy and the training I got back was remarkable. Even my dog that I got a while back got some tips and tricks by the best herself. Also, if you have any questions it's always a response as soon as possible. Never was I waiting for too long to hear back. I would 10/10 recommend this to anyone!! Trust me you won't regret it.

Not only has Jocelyn helped with training my new puppy Zac (which she is amazing at), she also came to my home two to three times a day while my family and I were away on February vacation. It was such an amazing relief to know my puppy was well taken care of, had consistent and amazing companionship throughout the day, and was taken on walks and provided meals. Jocelyn provided me with the much-needed sense of peace while I was away, she sent me pictures and videos during each visit, and was available to add drop-ins even at last minute notice. I would highly recommend all of her services to anyone who has a four-legged family member!!!!!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
