Omar and Oscar were fabulously qualified. I have used 3 other companies to move my Steinway grand in the past, and All-pro piano movers were by far the most expienced and professional.

I just finished my move today with Max, Joe, and Steve of Boston Best Rate Movers. This was my first time ever hiring movers and they made it amazingly easy! The total trip was from the 2nd floor of a storage (with a broken elevator!) in Boston to the 3rd-floor apartment of a Brooklyn brownstone. I was transported with my stuff to New York over great conversation, and everything went as planned with no complications. I would use them again in a heartbeat! The only thing I regret is the amount of tip I left them, which I found out after a quick google search, wasn't nearly enough! These guys were so amazing they didn't complain about it. Will definitely seek them out again/recommend them for future moves.

Amazing! I have never used movers before and I must say, I'll never move anything again without calling Alex first. He saved us! We were scheduled to close on our new home on Friday and move in the afternoon, turns out there was a title issue and the schedule got changed at the last minute. Alex was super flexible and supportive the whole time. He made sure to not add another stressful item by being difficult with timing. They were very fast and thorough with their service. I will continue to use them and recommend them to friends! Thanks Alex!

Lamar and George had to be the nicest, most professional movers I've ever hired! They were polite, efficient, and concerned for the condition of my furniture. Also, Alex quoted us a great price, and there were no surprises when it came time to pay. I would recommend them to anyone who wants a reasonably priced, smooth move.

I rated these movers 5 stars only because I couldn’t rate them any higher. These movers did everything right. They were prompt, neat, clean and very professional in their appearance. They were extremely careful with each piece of furniture. They wrapped each piece of furniture with a thick quilted blanket, then wrapped the blanket with tape to make sure the blanket stayed on the furniture throughout it’s journey. They then carefully and strategically placed each piece of furniture in the moving truck. Once the furniture was in place, they lashed down the furniture with webbing to ensure the furniture didn’t move or bounce around in the truck during the travel cycle. Once they reached their destination point, they unwrapped each piece of furniture one at a time and carefully placed them where instructed. My wife and I are extremely pleased and couldn’t ask for better. Oh,…and did I mention they were reasonably priced? It’s a pretty safe bet that if you hire these movers, you’ll be more than satisfied. We can’t say enough about them!

We had a wonderful experience with Miss Cheryl’s Movers. They were 100 per cent responsive to our questions before the move, they showed up 10 minutes early, worked really hard and efficiently and as an added bonus Jack and Lorand are really nice guys. We were especially impressed when I made note to Lorand about how we was so carefully wrapping a piece of our furniture and he said, “the most important thing about being a good mover is to treat someone else’s belongings like they are mine.’ Perfectly said and we’ll done! Thank you Miss Cheryl’s Movers.

Great experience! They arrived on time and the entire move was incredibly efficient. Two movers came very prepared, and they were ready to even take down my mounted TV. I would recommend Step by Step to any friend or family member.

Move from Providence, RI, to NYC. Movers showed up on time, were extremely professional and made sure my items were handled with care. I was very happy with how quickly they completed the move, especially getting things out of the apartment in Providence and into the one in NYC. They did a great job arranging my boxes and furniture in my new apartment so it was easy for me to unpack. Strongly recommended!

Moving into our THIRD FLOOR apartment was so incredibly smooth (and quick) with the moving help from Top Speed. Definitely highly recommend them for any move. Our movers, Michael and Juan, were polite, professional, and had a great energy on moving day. Prices were budget-friendly and completely worth it.

These guys were great. Our previous movers never showed up and these guys saved us. They came over at 10:30, worked efficiently and offered to help even with our extra small items. They set up our beds and were very professional. I can’t thank them enough for coming through when we needed them the most. Would highly recommend and will use around the Clock in the future. Thank you again guys. They worked so hard until 1:30 am to make sure we were all set.

Very easy to make arrangements. Very responsive to my messages/questions. The 2 movers worked their butts off from 10:15-7:15. They were friendly, polite and hard workers. Also a really good value. They were the lowest quote I got. $100 per hour with a truck. I mentioned the price to several friends of mine who had recently moved and we got the best deal! Highly recommended.

Michael and his crew were great. They helped us move out of a 3 br house. Although he is a labor only mover, meaning I had to rent the truck, he picked up the truck and drove it,as well as dropped it off back off to truck rental company. Michael also installed 2 of my flat screen TVs to the wall! I highly recommend him!

I recently moved from Boston, MA to southern Maine. Smart Penny sent me a truck and two guys to move everything out of my 2 bedroom second-floor apartment to my new 3 bedroom first-floor apartment. It took three hours to get everything out (they wrapped all my furniture for me) and one to get everything back in. They even helped move some of the crap furniture left behind by the previous tenant. The movers worked so efficiently it actually ended up taking longer to drive up than it did doing the actual labor. Fortunately, Smart Penny gave me an excellent deal. Even though Maine and Massachusetts could be considered a "long distance move", they considered it a local move and charged me a flat rate for travel time, which saved me well over $200 thanks to all that traffic. I would definitely highly recommend them!

Alex, Dimitry, and Eugene were essential to our move. They were communicative and arrived promptly and helped us figure out the best plan. They were confident and competent, clearly experienced. That calmed us - we handed everything over to them, and they took excellent care of us and our belongings and were respectful of our new and old homes. Very efficient. Friendly. Helpful. Amazing price for stellar service. We'll absolutely call them next time movers are needed. Thank you!

After researching various movers, we went out on a limb and picked Flash Moving Company for our move. These guys are great - Fast, Focused and very Professional. They wrapped all furniture and fragile packages like television, etc. carefully. During loading as well as unloading, they were mindful of walls and corners. All furniture was disassembled & re-assembled correctly. Everything - every furniture piece, every box - was put where we asked. We had incredible experience with this company. If you are looking for a reliable, cost effective and hassle-free move, I would highly recommend Flash Moving company.

Poseidon Moving helped us move from Boston to NC. After shopping around, they offered us the best price, and at a flat rate. This meant that we didn't share the truck with anyone else, therefore reducing worries about our things getting lost or mixed into other people's belongings. Surprisingly, this service was cheaper than some of the big-name brands (United, Allied, etc.) that ship multiple containers at a time. The team arrived exactly on time, picked everything up and disassembled some of our larger furniture, such as tables and the bed. They drove straight down to NC and the next morning they delivered our things. Nothing was broken and they put the furniture back together again. I would definitely recommend them to anyone who is looking for help moving either locally around Boston, or even across state lines. Thanks!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
