Serge catered for our office holiday party. He made a grilled romaine salad, chicken roulade with potatoes and mixed vegetables, and a chocolate tart. Everything was delicious, I was very impressed! I had never had catering done for our office parties before (sadly, we have always just done pizza or something similar), but this was definitely much better for a special occasion, and very reasonably priced. I would not hesitate to use Pure Kitchen Culinary Concept again!

Best value you could get in a wedding catering company! Quick basic info on my wedding since yours might be different: Late May wedding in Maryland, 7-hour reception with cocktail hour and dinner, approx. 100 guests, Manor, garden & tented reception setting, buffet dinner including a mix of food and drinks representing the cultures of the bride & groom (salvadoran, thai, new orleans, baltimore). Just two days after our wedding day I am feeling so good about the decision we made in booking Top of the City Catering. Maribel and her team were absolutely fantastic and we received soooo many compliments on our food, desserts, and cocktails, which were all provided by Top of the City. They had also done a great job of setting up décor for the guest tables, around the venue, and for the buffet and bar areas. In addition, the service throughout the day and night was phenomenal and we (bride & groom) always felt taken care of. For planning, we wanted a rustic, elegant feeling and they did a great job of presenting us ideas that were aligned with our vision. Top of the City Catering is a smaller catering business, but that does not make it any less in quality. When we were first looking into Top of the City I was a little leery because it was much more affordable and it usually is said, "You get what you pay for," but in this case that was NOT true at all. Maribel and her team are very responsive in communication, are very open and welcoming to your ideas and direction, and will always give suggestions from their expertise but still respect your wishes should you want something different. I really hope that Top of the City will gain momentum in growing its business and gaining the respect it deserves. Don't let the size of the company distract you from the amazing service, quality of food, flexibility, and affordable price you will get from Top of the City catering. Eleven Courses did a wonderful job catering our wedding on Friday. Jim came up with a delicious personalized vegan menu for us, and he always responded to emails quickly whenever I had questions. On the wedding day, Chrissy was our catering coordinator, and she made sure we had everything we needed all night. I was also impressed with how quickly their staff was able to flip the room during cocktail hour since we had our ceremony and reception in the same place. Thank you!

Chef Nikki and team catered a family gathering of mine yesterday. Leading up to the event, she always responded to all of my inquires in a prompt manner. I was a little nervous planning the event and she always made me feel comfortable. I actually feel like I have known her for years which is not the case. The food was fantastic and everyone enjoyed themselves. The mac and cheese was on point! There was more then enough food for everyone that attended and more then enough to take home afterward. The catering company is affordable and I will use them again in the future.

I cannot recommend Sandra highly enough. She was such a pleasure to work with all through the process of planning a brunch to celebrate our children's baptism. She talked through the menu and the schedule with us well in advance and kept in touch as she pulled all the pieces together. Her food was beautiful and absolutely delicious. And, she was attentive to every detail. She brought tablecloths and accents to match the colors of our kids' outfits and arranged beautiful flower arrangements to help decorate the house. She was cheerful and clearly invested in making sure we had a beautiful event. We have found our event caterer and look forward to working with Sandra again in the future!

Soleia's catered a graduation party for us recently for about 50 people. They did a wonderful job from nuts to bolts, visiting our home beforehand to see where and how they would lay things out, bringing staff to assist in setup both with their food and equipment and our decorations. That was a welcome surprise. The food was delicious and we received a lot of compliments about the catering. The cake that she baked was wonderful and again many compliments. They went out of their way to make everyone happy and worked very hard while they were there. We ate leftovers for a week! They also arranged for a tent, tables and chairs because I wasn't sure about the weather and I had many people tell me it was a perfect event. Overall, they did a wonderful job and I would highly recommend them.

Chef Vicki has cooked delicious meals for us regularly since September 2012. She has also done a splendid job catering our social events. Our guests were not only delighted with her recipes, but hearing one person after another comment on her warm, delightful disposition is just music to my ears. And that is how she is EVERY time. Chef Vicki has always been exceedingly accommodating, with delicious results.

Food was great--I didn't know that the Colada Shop catered, so that was a pleasant surprise. The price was right. I do wish that it came with wire racks/sternos. Also, we paid for utensils and plates but we didn't get any. The sales person said that she would credit that off the bill. I would definitely use the Colada Shop again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

  • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
  • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
  • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
  • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
  • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
