We lost our garage remote years ago, as we previously had programmed the garage to automatically open and close with our vehicles. Recently, we bought a new car, bought a new Liftmaster garage door opener, and tried to sync the car with the garage door opener. Unfortunately, in addition to not being able to sync the car with the garage door opener, the garage door would no longer close or open. We used Thumbtack and got an immediate response from JR Garage. We called and spoke with Clayton Smith, who walked us through and helped us to make our garage door opener work again WITHOUT ANY CHARGE. Clayton Smith saved us time and money, and was super nice and helpful. Would definitely contact them in the future for any garage door repairs or needs!!!

Antonio was very easy to work with. I needed wallpaper installed on one bedroom wall. He gave me a fair price and sent someone the next day to get the job finished. Javier was very respectable and worked quickly. He even graciously removed his boots so he didn't get my new rug dirty. I will definitely hire Renaissance in the future for my painting and wallpaper needs. Looking forward to getting them back in the spring to complete my first floor.

Justin was very thorough, professional and totally competent, and did an excellent job at installing my garage door opener. He helped address a product issue with the opener and clearly explained the problem to me, as well as helped get this resolved by Sears customer service. While he was delayed at arriving on time due to a prior appointment, he informed me & set expectations. All-around very positive experience.

We had the pleasure of Traylor Design & Construction LLC repainting our entire home. Although our place is relatively small, the architecture could be quite challenging to navigate from a painter's perspective. Andre, Marco, and the rest of the team literally turned our vision into reality, architecture and all. We made sure to communicate with them and they made sure to do the same in return. In addition, we had a barn door installed that required additional maneuvering and it turned out beautifully. I highly recommend Traylor Design & Construction LLC for anyone requiring painting or remodeling needs.

Yonathan went above and beyond to provide excellent customer service and make sure I was completely satisfied with my garage door installation. Moreover, his honesty and integrity are refreshing to see in the service industry. Even though the installation took longer than expected, he took the extra time to make sure I understood how to use everything and even gave me some tips on how to properly maintain my garage door opener.

Overall I’m pleased with my new garage door. We had issues about an extra service that was not quoted but which had to be done for the job to be complete properly. As a result, I was charged an extra $130 above what had been agreed on. And when I reached out to management, they didn’t have the decency to reply back to me personally. I paid the extra, but felt that I was being taken advantage of. I think if they were a little bit clearer on what additional/unexpected costs might entail, I would not have felt cheated.

As many people would say “I ‘m usually not a person that will sit down a take the time to write a review” but I’ve made an exception this time. Last week I was in need of a new garage door opener and as I was talking with several companies to perform this task I decided to hire Eagle Garage Door. Let me explain why, while speaking with the sales representative with no pressure to buy she explained and educated me on the different types of garage door motors, brands, the different types of spring assembles etc.… They were able to come out and install the garage openers on the same day, the technician was and courteous and performed a professional install removed old parts and clean up. When I called back the next day to inform them that my older model truck HomeLink would not work with the new garage door opener, without hesitation they brought a Repeater over to my house that now allows my trucks HomeLink to communicate with the new garage door opener, at not additional charge. After everything was completed they performed a follow to ensure I was completely satisfied. Overall, I’m very happy that I hired Eagle Garage Door the company’s staff made this task a very pleasant contractor experience.

Chad arrived this morning as promised and used a snow blower to clear my driveway. He applied salt to prevent freezing over tonight, then proceeded to clear a path from the driveway to the front steps. Cleared the steps and path to front door. For the first time since the blizzard, I will be able to exit my house, so needless to say, I am very pleased and will call Chad in the future. I will also recommend him to friends. He is licensed and insured according to his business card and that is also reassuring. Susan Kline Parkville, MD

This was my first time using Thumbtack.com and it is a God send for single mother's like me. As soon as I sent out my request about garage door repair, I immediately received a response from Corley Construction and Remodeling, Inc. They were able to assess my damages through photos and a video. They were at my door within 30 minutes. They worked with my schedule and were able to fix my door in less than two hours. They also gave me tips on care and maintenance. I would highly recommend this company and I plan on using them in the future.

Pop's Garage service was fantastic. First they scheduled my garage repair instantly and arrive within a couple of hours after being called. The tech named Nati was extremely knowledgeable and professional. He looked at my issue and then said "I will fixed this for you" He went to work and thoroughly fixed my garage door that had broken rollers and loose cables. The service price was reasonable and this is the place to go for good reliable service. Thanks Pops for such a professional job.

DMV was actually the second company to give me an estimate. The first did a quick assessment and quoted me for the cost of replacement. Ben came over and repaired the spring, alignment, and motor on my garage in just about one hour. He was expert, honest, and professional. I highly recommend DMV.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

How much does it cost to install a new garage door opener?

Your new garage door opener cost will vary based on the model you purchase and how long installation takes. Typically, installation pros charge by the hour, although if the pro is also selling the garage door opener they may have a flat fee for the product with installation. The national average for new garage door opener costs (with installation) is between $390 and $650, although the national average cost for the opener purchased alone may be in the $150-$300 range. The three most common types of openers are chain-drive, screw-drive and belt-drive. The chain-drive costs the least but makes the most noise. The belt-drive is typically the quietest and the most expensive. You can expect to pay about the same amount for installation for any of the three styles. The lifespan of a garage door opener is approximately 10 years, depending on quality. A pro may provide opener repairs for the cost of their service call fee or they may charge a flat fee, such as $100 for opener repair. Here are some examples of new garage door opener average costs, including installation:

  • Contractor-grade garage door opener with installation: $300.
  • Chain-drive opener with installation and one remote: $350.
  • Belt-drive opener with installation and two remotes: $400
  • Top-of-the-line opener with ¾-horsepower battery backup, belt drive and nearly soundless operation: $475
    • The majority of higher-end garage door openers are “smart” products and will connect via app to your smartphone for remote access.

How much does it cost to get a new garage door?

A new garage door can add serious curb appeal, not to mention myriad home safety benefits. The cost of a new garage door will vary based on the type of garage door you want and the materials it will be made of. You can purchase a new garage door and have the pros install it for you, but proceed with caution as many installers won’t guarantee their labor if you didn’t purchase the garage door through their company. A new door (without installation) may cost anywhere from $200 to $4,000 or more, depending on size, brand and materials. Here are some examples of average new garage door costs, including installation:

  • Raised-panel, insulated,16x7 garage door: $1,100
    • Without insulation: about $900
  • Raised-panel, insulated, 8x7: $700
    • Without insulation: $550
  • Carriage-house 16x7 garage door with stamped-steel design: $1,500
  • Carriage-house 8x7 garage door with stamped-steel design: $1,000
    • A carriage-house garage door is a barn-style door with handles and hinges; it looks like it pulls out in the style of a barn door but is actually a roll-up.
  • Carriage-house 16x7 garage door with steel and faux-wood overlay: $3,500
  • Carriage-house 8x7 garage door with steel and faux-wood overlay: $2,000–$2,200
  • Solid-wood cedar or mahogany 16x7 garage door with window in top panels: $5,000
  • Solid-wood cedar or mahogany 8x7 garage door with window in top panels: $3,500

How much should it cost to replace a garage door cable?

If your garage door is not opening or has become jammed, you may need to replace the garage door cables. Unless you have the proper tools and know-how, this is a job best left to a professional due to the weight of the garage door and the extreme tension of the springs. The cost of repair will vary depending on your location, the length of the cables you need, and the time it takes the pro to do the replacement.

From a big-box store, basic garage door cables can run between $8 and $20, depending on the product. Your pro may charge you a different cost if they provide the cables. Your cables may not need to be replaced if they have simply come off the track, but broken cables will need to be completely removed and replaced. In either instance, the pros will need to secure or take down the door; unwind the springs; reset or replace the rollers, cables, and drums; and then wind the springs once more. For example, a pro could reset cables that have come off the track for $129.99. The average national cost for a garage door repair specialist is $80 - $110 per hour and the typical cost to replace a broken garage door cable is anywhere from $130 to $200.

How much is it to replace a garage door panel?

Replacing a garage door panel can add significantly to the cost of a garage door repair. Panels run horizontally on sectional roll-up garage doors. They may be made of wood, vinyl, aluminum, fiberglass or steel. Garage door panels can become damaged from hail and other extreme weather, dents and dings, car accidents, and age. When deciding if you want to replace a garage door panel, it’s helpful to compare the potential repair cost to the cost of a new garage door. Panel replacement requires a pro with the proper tools as well as the new parts. With parts and labor you could be paying more than $500 for one new panel. In comparison, a new garage door may cost $800-$1,200 (on average) with installation. If there is a possibility your garage door was structurally compromised when the panel was damaged, have the pro assess whether it’s better to completely remove and replace the door, rails and framework to ensure your home’s safety. It may also be better to completely replace your door if it is severely rusted or dented; if the paint is peeling and fading; if the door model is outdated or you can’t find replacement panels; or if the panels or rails are structurally compromised.
