I have used Alvin Smithson's services for over five years as a piano tuner, teacher and performer. I am always impressed with his skills, artistry and professionalism. Alvin first came to tune my 100-years old Steinway after it had been neglected for a number of years. He first examined the instrument, diagnosed what needed to be done and then proceeded with his expert tuning. Immediately after he was done and started playing, I was amazed at how good the piano sounded. Alvin explained that with a piano that hasn't been tuned or played in so many years, it will take some time to achieve its best form and sound for which it was built. A short time after, my wife started taking piano lessons from Alvin and as she started gaining proficiency in playing under his guidance, the piano itself gained a rich pleasing sound. Alvin paid close attention and adjusted notes or did a full tuning whenever needed. He also took the time to clean the strings and do minor technical adjustments. When a string needed to be replaced, Alvin recommended a technician from a highly reputable company. Overall, we owe it to his expertise to have the wonderful old piano do what it was built for by the Steinway masters. I should also mention that I heard some great musicians at venues where Alvin is the regular piano tuner. People who visit our house and hear our piano, or play it themselves, always compliment its sound. But the best comes when Alvin himself sits at the keyboard, whether at our house, at a social function or performing in the theater, it's such a joy to hear him play some great classical pieces as well as his own wonderful compositions. He is truly a very talented, sensitive and highly knowledgeable artist. And such a pleasant person, too. My wife and I feel fortunate to have Alvin give us the best piano sound to enjoy live music in our home. I would recommend him to anyone as piano tuner, teacher and overall musician.

Alvin Smithson is a very gifted classically trained musician. Accomplished in all aspects of piano performance and instruction. He is a leader in the theater community and composer of solo piano and orchestral music in contemporary and classical styles. A very genuine and sincere person, willing to dialogue on music topics with everyone at any level. Alvin is also an expert on tuning and maintenance of pianos. You cannot find anyone more knowledgeable, careful, and trustworthy to tune your piano. His rates are very reasonable. 5 Stars!

After a great stint of piano and violin lessons, we just began with Johnny Walker, Aida's strings teacher, to start my son on cello. We are so impressed with him - he knows HOW to teach, asking questions, guiding my son to think and understand rather than a mere demonstrate-and-repeat style. My son immediately took to him and can hardly wait between lessons for the next. Thank you!

I began lessons with Andrew Toy about a month ago. Very personable and talented musician. My main reason for taking up lessons was to increase my drum vocabulary. I do not read music but have been playing drums since I was a teenager. I am now 84 and enjoying it personally but have had a few "gigs" here and there. Not only am I learning new variations but Andrew is introducing me to reading music. He is a good teacher; very patient and personable. Thanks for recommending him. Murray Green mgreen@erols.com

Andrew is a terrific instructor. He starts with the basics and as a result a solid foundation is started for good drumming. Andrew customizes lessons and genres to individual preferences and needs, and knows how to keep it fun while learning. I would recommend Andrew as an instructor to friends and family looking to learn how to drum.

I am thrilled with the quality of instruction I've received from Sammy. From the instant I met him he was cordial and enthusiastic, asking me questions as to what I wanted to learn and any goals I might have for our lessons. He is full to the brim with musical knowledge, sharing techniques and insight that I had never gotten before, despite my own background in classical music. Always professional, Sammy just wants to see you succeed and achieve the goals you place for yourself. He's probably one of the best music teachers I've ever had the pleasure of studying under.

William is both an incredible performer and teacher. I studied under him for a few semesters while taking lessons at the Eastman School of Music and I found his approach to technique and musicality to be very effective. He also pushes the importance of ear training and how it can help with intonation issues. Overall, William's a great guy to work with and he will push you to be better.

Keith is an incredible instructor! At each lesson, he always makes you feel that making you a better drummer is more important than anything else for him during that 1/2 hour. I have been taking lessons from Keith for about 2 years. I am a 55 year old woman who took lessons as a child and wanted to continue learning where I left off so many years ago. Keith is exceptional at identifying your weak spots and giving you very helpful and practical techniques to strengthen them. With Keith as my instructor, I have learned to read music and my skill as a drummer has improved enormously. He has so much knowledge about all aspects of drumming. He is incredibly passionate about drumming as a performer, and conveys that same passion when teaching his students. He is just as effective with very young students as he is with older students (like me)! I would recommend him as an instructor to anyone with the desire to learn all aspects of becoming a drummer.

Keith is a drummers, drummer. Aside from being an exceptional drum instructor, he has LOADS of touring experience, professionally recorded, numerous workings with "Big Names" in the music industry, and not to mention the grammy's are quite impressive :-) Keith not only taught me how to read drum music, but he encouraged me relentlessly when it sometimes became challenging, as things worth while often are. He explained the ever important role of 'time management' in music and how it not only affects music, but also that it affects every aspect of our lives. Keith has been a mentor and also a friend. As a person with my own successes in the industry, I have found a profound inspiration from Keith. I cherish our 30 min together and wouldn't trade them for anything. I highly recommend Keith as a drum teacher for ALL ages.

What a great fortune to find my perfect singing instructor through this site. Diane is a pleasure to work with. She made me feel. Try confortable and explained what goes into good singing technique and I can already see an improvement since my second lesson. She is very professional and very friendly. Very respectful and has a great way of explaining things. The price is very reasonable and she is very patient. I never took singing lessons before and have not studied music, but she was willing to teach me from nothing and I quickly learned enough to improve a lot in a little time. I can't wait to tale more lessons and get even better. I highly recommend her especially to other females that are looking for an instructor they can trust and feel safe going to her home studio and directions are easy along with a large parking lot which makes it all convenient safe and efficient. Thank you Diane!

Singing in church choirs has been a wonderful outlet and enabled me to find a community as I moved every few years to different parts of the globe. Finally putting down roots, I wanted to find a voice coach who would help me improve breath control, strengthen the range of my voice, and improve the overall quality of my singing. I am blessed to have found Keely Bosworth Borland, a gifted soprano and performer. Keely has been the perfect coach for me. She has a unique ability to both nurture and push me. Keely has identified and helped me work on my breath control. She has used a wide variety of music to foster my confidence while stretching my vocal range. Her lessons include a selection of vocal warm-ups and breathing exercises each week that compliment the music we sing. I have found that recording her lessons and rehearsing them between lessons to be of great help. I highly recommend Keely to anyone looking for a voice coach from the novice to the serious performer.

Our daughter, 13, has been taking voice lessons with Keely for almost a year, and has had a terrific experience. Keely has taken the time to get to know our daughter, her strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes, and she makes effective use of the lesson time, finding music our daughter enjoys (musical theater), as well as challenging her with music she might not otherwise have been exposed to. Keely is very encouraging, abounding in patience, and a lot of fun to work with. Our daughter loves her lessons!

I studied voice with Dorothy Miller for over four years, and I loved every lesson I had with her! I began taking voice lessons in eighth grade because I loved musical theater, but I could not sing. I was absolutely tone-deaf and I couldn't even read music. When I first began with Dorothy, she gave me nothing but continuous encouragement and support, teaching me the most basic techniques necessary for singing. As I progressed through the years, I not only overcame my tone-deafness but actually became a good singer. She helped me to expand my range by over an octave, adding notes to the top and bottom of my range. I now have a range of nearly three octaves when I began barely able to sing an octave scale. In addition to voice, Dorothy also helped me prepare for various auditions as well as taught me to read music and some basic music theory. She also has experience with acting, especially with musical theater, so some of my lessons were dedicated specifically to enhancing my acting skills, both with and without music. Over the years, I began to develop a friendship with Dorothy because she really takes time to get to know her students on a personal level and always loves to sit and chat before and after her lessons. She always made me laugh and was very kind. I never left a voice lesson without a smile on my face, and I always looked forward to returning the following week. I loved studying under Dorothy so much that I recommended her to four of my best friends, who also took lessons with her for multiple years. I now am in my second year of college and no longer am able to take lessons with Dorothy anymore. However, I still make it a point to catch up with her whenever I have a break to talk about how my semester has been, and it is like I never left. I would give Dorothy Miller Vocal Studio 10/5 stars if I could because she is absolutely phenomenal, and I would recommend her to anyone in a heartbeat. I am very lucky to have been her student, and I wouldn't be where I am today without her.

The vocal technique that I learned from Dorothy Miller completely transformed my voice and my career as a singer. Dorothy’s teaching focuses on the implications of classical, consistent technique within all different styles of music. Voice lessons with Dorothy combine this teaching of safe, anchored singing while exploring the exciting world of performance and audition repertoire. For me, I started working with Dorothy at the age of 12. I had been singing my whole life, but my throat was constantly sore and I had no access to higher ranges. In my 6 years of study with her, I was able to expand my range and vocal versatility, lay down a firm technique and develop a passion for new types of music. Dorothy works to develop an authentic, individual relationship with each student, and over the years I can genuinely say she has become like a second mother to me. She additionally helped me to navigate and prepare for the college audition process, and I completely credit her in my acceptance to the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University!

I have known Joanna for over 30 years now, and know that even back then she had a sheer musicality both at guitar and keyboards. Her handling of elementary school students of any grade when teaching, then middle school and older, was always carefully measured, often catering to individual needs in order to bring out or focus musical gifts, or simply to raise the level of a student's appreciation for art. She has kept that measure of regard for students of all ages since she went into non-school teaching. I also would assure anybody who wants to send a younger student to her that if after an appropriate period of time she felt they were not progressing or that music was perhaps not a good fit for them that she would be honest about that to the parents rather than have anybody waste time and resources trying to engage a child with other interests. But her goal has always been, as I have observed, to find a way to engage them in the first place. Results and honesty, as well as musical passion. What more need be said. (Please know that as a professional musician myself that this is as unbiased an opinion as I can possibly render.)

I am currently taking lessons with Ms. Carol Westcott and I could not be more thrilled. The setting of the studio is not only comfortable but welcoming, while at the same time her expertise and knowledge make it so easy for me to trust her judgment. She has a very technical way of teaching; when something goes askew in my voice, she tells me exactly what happened, and even has a 3-D laminated model of the larynx and vocal cords to show me what happens when I sing low, high and in between. On the other hand, she knows my voice so well that she can tell me exactly what to do based on my unique voice in order to produce a certain sound or tone. She has helped me develop my opera, chest mix, chest register, head register, low, middle, and high belt, as well as different styles of music, such as country, pop, alternative and musical theater. ONE LAST THING: I arrived at my first lesson not knowing a THING about sheet music...I had based my learning on sound for my whole life, so I couldn't read notes, keys or symbols. She taught me how to do just that. Thank you, Ms. Carol!

I am one of Wes Crawford's older students at age 50. I have been taking lessons from him for over 5 years. Prior to this, my daughter, in 6th grade at the time, took lessons for a year. We were both novices when we started. Wes is a great drummer who performs regularly with jazz groups. He is also an excellent, very organized, teacher who devotes much thought into effective teaching methods. He is very patient, always encouraging, never demeaning to students regardless of their talent. His studio basement has 2 full drum kits, so he can demonstrate techniques on one while the student is on another. I would highly encourage anyone -- from novice to an advance player -- to take lessons from Wes. You will be happy you did.
