Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does dog training typically cost?

The average cost of dog training ranges from $60 to $155 per hour. But, your dog’s training might cost more or less depending on a number of different factors. For example, you might pay less if you schedule group classes instead of private instruction. The type of training (aggressive behavior, basic obedience, off-leash training, etc.) could have different prices as well.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a dog trainer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Utilize as many digital means as necessary when setting up appointments or consultations with dog trainers near you during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the best way to begin is by conducting a search for dog trainers online. Compare services side by side, and ask each dog trainer you contact if it’s possible to schedule a consultation or appointment completely virtually. During this time, you should also discuss strategies for completing training and payments through digital means.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a dog trainer when social distancing?

Current CDC guidelines state, “Do not let pets interact with people or animals outside the household.” It also explains that more studies are needed to understand if and how animals could be affected by the virus that causes COVID-19 and how this might affect human health.

If you’re uncomfortable with hiring a dog trainer right now, you can reach out to dog trainers in your area to see if they will let you book an appointment in the future when social distancing guidelines are lifted. Or, ask if they offer virtual or remote services.

If you do decide to hire a pro to train your dog in person, limit any physical contact with the trainer. Stay 6 feet apart, sanitize items and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Is dog training worth the money?

Dog training can be a highly rewarding investment for most dog owners. With dog training, you can establish a better, healthier relationship with your dog, who will learn to understand your commands and wishes. Your frustration levels may decrease, and you might be able to resume activities you’ve put off, such as having people over or taking your dog to public places (though, this is hard to guarantee because each dog is unique).

Just remember that no amount of dog training will pay off if you don’t practice and follow the directions the dog trainer gives you. Consistency is the most important factor.

Is it ever too late to start training a dog?

It’s never too late to train your dog — “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is a myth. Whether you adopt an older dog from the shelter or simply want to have a better relationship with your elderly dog, hiring a dog trainer can be a good investment.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Dog trainers can perform a range of activities, ranging from training law enforcement dogs to working with therapy dogs or search-and-rescue dogs. However, most people hire dog trainers for obedience training. This is largely a process of training the human — much of how a dog interprets our behaviors, commands, tone and body language is counterintuitive at first. The trainer will typically come to your home to observe your relationship with your dog, teach you how to train a command and give you guidance for reinforcing it.

Can I use digital payments to pay for dog training?

Many professional dog trainers accept digital payments instead of cash or check. One effect of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it is encouraging companies and services to onboard digital platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo and Square Cash as a means of curbing virus transmission risk.

When you contact dog trainers near you, ask if they’ll accept digital payments. This information is also typically available on their online profiles.

Do dog trainers offer remote or virtual services?

Although dog training is traditionally performed in person, the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some professional dog trainers to move to remote training and virtual services. You can contact dog trainers near you to ask about the possibility of remote or virtual services. Also, ask whether all aspects of the process can be digital, including payment.

How can I find out if a dog trainer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines on essential services are constantly being updated by local and federal government agencies. To see which services qualify as essential COVID-19 service providers, start with your city or state’s government website.

A reliable list of federal guidelines is available on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.  .

Does a dog trainer need to enter my home?

Depending on the type of dog training you need, a dog trainer may need to enter your home. Many behaviors that need to be corrected are associated with the dog being in the house. However, some types of training can take place virtually or even outside while observing safe social distancing practices.

Start by asking dog trainers in your area if they’ll perform a video consultation instead of an in-person one, and ask if they need to enter your home.

Brian has such a calm demeanor and gave us simple directions for helping with our dog's behavior. We chose to have Brian "train us to train our dog" and it has been working beautifully. Brian is easy to communicate with and we would highly recommend him to anyone who needs dog training help.

We hired Brian to help our dog with his social skills with other dogs. Brian was very helpful and professional. He didn't "fix" our dog but he provided the group work for us to continue the training.

Brian is a wonderful trainer. He was prompt and gave clear and helpful explanations on how to understand our pup. We went to Brian to help train our high-energy (but very smart, too smart!) dog on leash-walking and interacting calmly with other dogs and people. She is already listening so much better, walking better, and just enjoying life more.

He is an incredibly calm, patient man who really understands dog psychology. Lots of great advice and truly gave me the confidence I needed to move forward with my training skills. My Malinois mix is getting a lot more out of our outings and also I now know how to correct the unwanted behavior in way that she quickly understands. I now know how to work on letting people in my home. A lot of work to do but there is a solid plan now, thanks to Brian. The dog that hates visitors was sad to see him leave. I highly recommend him as a dog and owner/leader trainer.

I've used other dog trainers in the past, but none compares to the effectiveness of Natasha. My primary reason for hiring her was to stop my Springer Spaniel from lunging at other animals. After the first session, that behavior was virtually extinguished. My dog quickly learned all other behaviors as well, from sitting and lying down to heeling. It's been an amazing transformation. I have to admit, I was wary about the use of the e-collar on my sweet dog, but under Natasha's instructions, I used very low settings, which were effective and I don't believe caused my dog pain. Natasha's manner with both dog owners and dogs is nothing if not patient and kind, and she's an excellent communicator. I can't recommend her highly enough. You will be astounded by the transformations she's able to achieve in your dog.

Wow where do I begin so we have been search for a trainer that can handle our dog he is a Doberman/Rottweiler mix. Very independent and at the time didn’t listen. Some of the issues I had were: Walking (he was always pulling and lunging at people or other dogs) I’m surprise my shoulder isn’t dislocated. Sitting( sitting is simple but he couldn’t do it for more then a minute) Jumping(when he meets people he would jump on them and most of the time they don’t want that and sometimes I wouldn’t either) Busy Bee (he never sits and relax everything is always play time or just running around the house. He wouldn’t even take a nap) Now when I was searching for a trainer I wanted someone that can handle him but not take away too much from his character I still love to play with him just needed him to listen when needed. The first trainer I met with did not seem confident in managing this dog and they charged me for a consultation. When I found Natasha on Thumbtack I reached out and ask for more information she was able to provide several examples and offered to do a free consultation with her. Once I met with her I explained my issues that I was having with him and what I would love to be able to do with my dog and from there she explained the plans for his training and how it was going to eliminate most of my issues with him. So, based on the consultation I felt like she understands what I need. After 1 day of training My dog changed immediately, she gradually took him to the next level every time we met. Those issues I had with him were long gone since day one of training!!!! And my dog is HAPPY!!!! He has so much more fun now that he has some type of training. She also gives you helpful tips for your dog to stay happy. Today my dog: Walking is zero pulling He walks next to me now Sitting is great and he will wait for the next command. In the past if I am about to give him something he would sit for 5 secs and just be impatient Jumping only happens if that person is inviting him to Busy bee part he knows how to turn it off and on we can take naps now and he will do it too This experience has allowed me to walk with my dog OFF leash, play anywhere with him and not have to worry that he will just run off and not listen. And we have a lot of fun. If you are looking for a trainer that is informative, patient, flexible and will get the job done like really see it through this is the one for you. Thank you so much for your work with my Dog. I definitely recommend !!!

Brian is absolutely wonderful. His training sessions were very thorough and he took the time to walk us through every step of the way. After just two sessions he taught us how to work with our dog moving forward, and we have already seen a big change in our year-old dog's behavior. I would recommend him over and over again!

James has been simply amazing! From our consultation to our first emergency session. He came all the way to Baltimore when he was in Virginia because my German Shepard was starting to bite me for corrections. James made this special trip to Baltimore just for us and even let me borrow his prong collar while mine comes in so I could have more control over my new rescue. He wanted to make sure I felt safe with my new dog and had the confidence to manage his behavior. In one session , James completely stopped my dog biting me (he was seriously bruising me when he bit me) while making me feel in control of the situation. James is kind, friendly, patient with owners, explains dog behavior and his methods and does not leave until you feel like you have control of your dog. I can’t wait to start our 5 week training course with James - if he could cut out this major issue in one session, I can’t wait for what he can do in 5 weeks! If you need a trainer who is compassionate but to the point, James is your guy! Many thanks to you James! - Rebekah and Gideon.

Canine Obsessions gave me a huge gift of a much better relationship with my first poppy. Salba was 2 months when I adopted him. He was very hyper and aggressive (when we did not do or give him attention). He couldn't be around my sister's dog because he bit her. Also, he was chewing everything, pulling on the leash on walks, jumping on visitors or dogs. He used to hate the crate!!! I had to chase him to put it in the crate. (he was getting big and difficult) I couldn't join many family parties because of his attitude. One day, I decided to look for help and I found Natasha. It was almost 2h30m round trip to take my baby to her class and guess what?? IT WAS WORTH IT!! She gave me faith and peace. After my baby's first-class, my whole family was impressed. Salba was another dog and I couldn't believe it. I would recommend Natasha 200/100. She had so patient with me and she took the time to make sure I knew how to train my dog. She was very helpful and I cannot be more grateful to her. My dog has much better behaved, he walks off-leash by my side when we take our daily walks. He no longer jumps on visitors when they step inside my home. He loves the crate now, and I do not need to chase him anymore!! I highly recommend Canine Obsessions. Natasha has a great understanding of dogs and people, which makes her fantastic and perfect at what she does. Thank you Natasha for this amazing experience and time. Now you can see how my sister dogs Dulce and Salba loves each other!!

Just finished my first session with Brian and I am BEYOND happy! We went into this feeling very nervous but Brian put us quickly at ease. After a very thorough assessment of our problems with our little Jasper we went out for a walk and I immediately began to understand what we’ve been doing right and what we could be doing differently with Jasper. I say “could be doing differently” because at no point did we feel negative about what we’ve been doing, only positive about what we can do differently! That is how Brian made us feel! Honestly we went into this session as if it was a last ditch effort, our expectations were low because Jasper is almost five and we thought it might be too late to change his behavior but we’ve come out of this day seeing light at the end of the tunnel. Jasper has been almost impossible to walk, impossible to be near any other dogs in the park, uncontrollable is how it has been but after one meeting I already can see the difference in Jasper. Brian gave us the information and now it’s on us to implement the changes. He’s available to us if we have questions before our next session and as long as we practice what he has taught us today I have no doubt in our success. In these tough times paying for a trainer seemed like maybe not the best expense for what we felt was an unknown outcome but today we feel like it was a very reasonable fee, worth every penny!!!! I will update my review on Jaspers progress. But for anyone out there who is like I was, trying to find a solution for what feels like unmanageable problems with their dog but not sure what to do all I can say is just do it! Thank you Brian!!! 💜
