Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an electrician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an electrician, choose virtual platforms for consultations like calling or video chats. Avoid any physical contact with the electrician, wave instead of shaking hands, stay 6 feet away, sanitize shared surfaces and use digital payment apps instead of cash.

Does an electrician need to enter my home?

Whether an electrician needs to enter your home depends on the type of work that needs to be completed. Any work on receptacles, lights and more located on the inside or outside of your house will likely require an electrician to enter your home.

Ask electricians in your area to perform a video consultation instead of a traditional walk-through to assess the project. During the consultation, they should be able to tell you if they’ll need to enter your home or not.

I am so happy with the work done at my new home! He put up a new ceiling in my master bedroom (with a vaulted ceiling). I couldn't give Frank enough stars for his workmanship, patience, and customer service!! He was punctual and gave me a fair/competitive price. I shopped around for electricians and I'm so glad I landed on this company! I've already rehired him to do another job and he will be back soon. If you're looking for a great electrician, look no further. Thanks again :-)

I truly appreciate JD as when I first met him, he came through for me as I had an emergency! The second time I hired him, he came through for me in an emergency. The third time I hired him was not for an emergency! I hired him to work in several areas of my house. He is an amazing electrician and who provides wise counsel. I’ve said all of this to say - he is my electrician and I will hire him for all of my electrical needs. I would advise you to hire!! He is the best!

I had an Excellent experience with this electrician. He was very responsive to all my concerns. I will be recommending him to everyone in my area. He worked fast and had no problem explaining his steps. I had a few outlets fixed and a new porch light installed for a very fair price.

K&K did a great job installing new light fixtures throughout my house and taking down a florescent light and replacing it with 3 recessed lights. The pricing was provided before the electrician arrived and he cleaned up before he left. Overall, it was a good experience. I would hire K&K again.

Lee did electrical work for me, and was very knowledgeable and professional. He identified places where the home developer and other electricians had cut corners and corrected the problems. He discovered that our sump pump had failed (possibly due to a power surge), though after 25 years it was probably due for replacement anyway. His price was very competitive and completed the following day. I’d definitely use DMV again. 👍

I am unable to put into words how amazed I am on the fabulous work that they did. If you can think of it, they can do it. I would highly recommend these electricians in your future projects. They were courteous and responded to any and all questions that I had. Even when I made changes in the middle of the project, they were able to accommodate my wishes. I will definitely use them in any future electrical project I have.

Kevin came out with less than 24 hours notice. He was friendly and professional. Due to the unexpectedly complex (and illogical) circuit wiring of our 1990's townhouse, the trouble shooting and repair of some dead outlets took longer than he, or I expected. This was not the first time we've had an electrician stumped by the logic of the circuits in our townhouse, so I don't blame him for the job taking longer than expected. He was able to figure out the circuit and get the outlets working properly in the end - which was the main point. He gave us a little cut on his final price due to the unexpected difficulty of what seemed like a straight ahead job, so I appreciated his customer service.

Glad to finally have a great electrician to call! 9/5/2019 This was my second experience with Ryan Electric. My main electric circuit breaker blew and melted and I found this out as a result of Ryan electric coming out so punctual and same day that I reached out to him. He troubleshooted 3 problems within a half hour first was the main electric circuit breaker underneath the stairs of my condominium the second and third were Breakers in my box in my condominium unit that have blown as a result and an additional item I asked him to trace the electric to my garbage disposal that crapped out on me. Ryan remembered his last visit two years ago and remembered my breaker box and the issues he helped me solve before in 2017. You researched and found and ordered the main breaker and picked up two additional Breakers from my box in my unit everything was done in a timely manner and with such professionalism. he went on further to explain/educate me on tracing in writing what each breaker belong to in the panel. I had another great experience and would recommend him and look forward to working with him on future projects. Costs were reasonable and below larger electric companies in the area.
