Beyond impressed with Tina's incredible talent and flawless ability behind the lens. She spends careful time and does not make you feel rushed in front of the camera. She goes the extra mile to ensure you are most comfortable at all times. She was also one of the nicest, most friendly, energetic and trustworthy photographers I've worked with! I am thrilled with the final product and her creative touch added to my port.

I found Doug on Thumbtack and was pleased to have him photograph my wedding this past October. First, I was so pleased to meet him before hand and see more of his work so I knew what to expect. But more than that, I realized that Doug is an exciting, interesting, and cheerful person which made the experience even better. He has an artistic eye and really made some beautiful memories that made me excited to have him shoot my big day! During the day, Doug captured fantastic moments and was flexible when we wanted him to get a specific person or time. He was over all energetic and cheerful! I had a few friends that are amateur photographers also take pictures for us and Doug took the time to answer some of their photography questions and giving them tips - going above and beyond his call... Finally, my pictures came out beautiful and in a timely manner. I can't thank him enough for capturing our day and producing this precious keepsake!

I first met Joe Lee in 2011 when I spent seven days with him as we traveled with the Wreaths Across America convoy from Maine to Arlington National Cemetery. Joe conducted himself with the utmost professionalism at each of our many stops along the way. He captured the special moments on audio, video and in still shots enabling me to recount the entire trip as if I was there in person again. This past July, Joe flew to Minneapolis to volunteer as the photographer and videographer for a two day memorial event held in honor of my son, an Army Ranger KIA in 2009. The morning of the first day, my house was struck by lightning and a fire ensued. Joe lost some of his equipment but quickly replaced it on his own so he could still do what he came to. This was a chaotic situation that others may have become discouraged from, but not Joe! He stayed the course and never faltered from his commitment. Joe Lee is not only very professional, he is a very personable guy whose positive presence will add to any event. Highly recommend!

We used Josh to take our engagement photos and he was really great! He was patient with us and flexible with location and day/time. When we started looking for photographers, we were drawn to Josh because of the style of his work. We didn't want anything that was overly posed, and his style is much more candid and relaxed. Would definitely recommend!

Thanks to DIM Productions for an amazing experience! Karmin is THE photographer that you want for familial events, sporting events, weddings, and et-cetera. I've hired Karmin a number of times and have never doubted that it was among the best decisions I've ever made. Karmin has impeccable timing, vision and experience to distinguish a great shot from a good one! She's personable, engaging, down-to-earth and just has a way with people that enthralls and disarms them. She's got an uncompromising standard at events and in her private studio. I cannot commend Karmin highly enough! -Al Johnson

My experience with Elmo Laing was a powerful trigger of personal memory---from light, to set-up, to processing. By all accounts, he is a meticulous craftsman. Through his eyes and indelible images of my party guests, I am still reliving this momentous occasion ---my 60th birthday celebration. In photograph after photograph, Elmo captured every mood and motion of the affair. He documented the dancing, the band, the striking group portraits, the cake, the room decorum, and of course--ME. His photography has played an important role of constructing memory because the stories leap from their stills. His images are stimulants for remembering---happy lives, families and friends, and what & how we celebrate. I hover over these images! That’s what fantastic photographers do….they show the environment, they show what they saw and they work to compose the best for YOU. That is exactly what Elmo Laing produced for me. Oh, wait a minute, did I mentioned that he is patient, polite, and precise with posing & positioning—a good photographer. Thank you, Elmo for your artistry, storytelling and technical ability. Eric was fabulous!! He volunteered to come to the rehearsal so he would know how and where to set up for the big day. I was very forthcoming about the fact that I wanted him to be ninja-like throughout the day, catching our special moments without being noticed. I am very camera-shy and didn't want this to interfere with our day. I have been to weddings where the videographers were in both the couples and the guests faces and that was not the experience we were looking for. He was fantastic and after seeing the video, I was very impressed with all the special moments he caught without us even knowing he was there!! Speaking of the video, we watched the highlight reel on our honeymoon and it brought us to tears - so special!! Also, Eric was very patient and compliant with us when we asked him to make some tweaks to our dvd. And all this was done in a very timely manner. Thank you Eric for making our day so special and for creating a wonderful video for us to cherish those memories!!

We used Metin / Picaboost Photography for my sister's wedding. From the initial contact and throughout the entire, Metin was very responsive. He answered any questions we had right away and even had a phone call with us to talk details before signing a contract. Since we had to push up the wedding, time was crucial and Metin was quick to respond so that was very helpful! We sent Metin a video shot list and he captured everything we asked of him. He arrived early the day of the wedding and was very kind and professional. We only requested raw footage and the footage he sent was great! He cut the footage down so it would not be overwhelming but he still had all of the important parts of the day. We would highly request Metin and Picaboost Photography!

We hired Mark for my Indian engagement party, which included a couple's shoot. We had Mark do the photography and his wife do videography. Mark made sure to keep in touch regularly in the weeks leading up to the event. He would ask us ample of questions and he also researched the Hindu engagement ceremony to be able to better capture the important moments and we really happy with that. On the day of the event, they arrived exactly on time, in fact 30 mins earlier than we expected, giving enough time to set up the cameras, lighting and conduct a photoshoot before the event. Very professional attitude throughout the function. He was very hardworking, and my entire family noticed it. He's one of the only vendors at our event that we felt fully satisfied with. Same goes for his wife, who was taking videos. When the pictures came in, we were in complete love with them. Very high quality and artistic shots. Mark was able to capture the event beautifully and the editing was on point too. I had a bunch of suggestions for editing and Mark was nice enough to incorporate those ideas when editing some important pics, and they came out great. The video was okay too, Mark supplied us with 3 copies of a DVD with the main highlights of the event and also an SD card with basically everything they had captured. We wanted to make sure that the ceremony, speeches, performances, games and free-dancing elements of the night wouldn't go unnoticed and we didn't want to burden any of our close friends or family to take videos for the entire night. That's when we got the idea to hire a team of two photographers and have one of them do the video. Mark's wife is not a professional videographer so some videos were shaky and kept going out of focus but that's because they didn't have a professional video camera which we agreed on to begin with. Overall I have no complaints with this team and I will definitely be hiring Mark and his wife for other family events.

He came to my house to do some portrait-type photography. I appreciated that Joe was relaxed and friendly and didn't seem rushed. I got the photos back from him very quickly. He was helpful in suggesting good backgrounds as well. I was very pleased with the end result. I think he'd make a great family photographer also.

Studio Pri is amazing! We hired Studio Pri off of Thumbtack and have absolutely no regrets in our decision since there are so many photographers out here! We also used them for our engagement photos which turned out beautifully! Priscilla and her team are easy going and very personal. They make you feel comfortable taking photos since most of us aren't used to it! Priscilla was very responsive to emails and got back to me within 1 day. They had our wedding photos and engagement photos ready for us within weeks! We are amazed at how good we looked in them and would definitely used their services again. Thanks so much for capturing all the amazing moments at our wedding :D

Justin and I started a conversation a little over a week ago. I was looking for a photographer who would be able to take us some couples photos for the holiday season. From the very start, Justin was punctual and he continued to be punctual through to the delivery of the photos. Often times when people hire photographers, people complain that photographers lose momentum once they’ve been offered the gig or once they’ve received payment. This is absolutely not the case with Justin. Justin’s punctuality definitely has been a plus point all the way. I also appreciated that Justin works with clients across varying price points. In addition, I must say Justin’s offer was definitely reasonable given that we’re situated in the DMV. Interacting with Justin, one of the first things I let him know was that I just wanted a quick photo shoot that would be a leg up from our usual selfies. Justin understood exactly what I was expecting out of our photo shoot. Justin and I worked out the details over text, and the photo shoot was quick and effortless. Though I didn’t end up calling him myself, I did pass on Justin’s phone number to a few colleagues of mine - he had such a great offer that I had to share with others! On that note, if you need to hop on the phone to talk details, just ask for his phone number. I am absolutely all about Pinterest and all things Pinterest related. I had ideas of poses but when we met up, my mind sort of went blank (I blame the cold!) and Justin had great ideas which resulted in some beautiful photos of the two of us. I also have to praise Justin’s understanding of space, lighting, and photography concept. Justin took a handful of posed and candid photos, which we both appreciated. Not only is Justin talented, but he is easygoing too. And that’s definitely a plus point when hiring a photographer. If you can’t be yourself around your photographer or if the photographer can’t get you to feel relaxed and at east, then you might as well throw in the towel because you won’t get quality photos. Thank you, Justin, we love love love our photos!! PS: Hire Justin. If my photos are any testament, I’m sure you too will be more than satisfied with yours!

Rachel is polite, responsive and professional. I hired her last minute as I hadn't had the chance to book a photographer for our event, and I'm so glad she was available and interested! She was detail oriented, and ensured we got every shot that I wanted to get. I look forward to working with her again!

We had an exceptional experience with Little Palm! We are so happy with the photos Talah took and our experience working with her. I was worried that it would be difficult to capture our son smiling (since he's a tween and was not enthusiastic about getting family pictures taken), but Talah worked hard to develop a good rapport with him and got some fantastic shots that captured his true personality and many shots of him with a bright smile. If you are looking for someone who will take a mix of traditional and artistic shots and has an outstanding eye for photo composition, look no further. We looked at several photographers before settling on Little Palm, and we are so happy with our decision! Take a look at her pictures compared to others, and there is no comparison.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

How much does it cost for a photographer for a wedding?

Finding the right wedding photographer can make a big difference for your ceremony. Nationally, the average wedding photographer’s price ranges from $800 to $1,000, but costs can be much higher in areas like Chicago, New York or Los Angeles where some couples spend $2,000 to $5,000 or more for the photographer they want. Factors that can affect your wedding photographer prices include the photographer’s reputation and experience. Heavy hitters can command top rates, especially during wedding-season weekends. Day of the week also affects your cost. You may get a $200 discount on wedding photographer prices if you get married on a Friday in November rather than a Saturday in June. Time onsite is also an important cost factor. Hiring a photographer to snap photos from the moment you wake up until after last call at the reception is going to cost more than five hours of pictures during the day. Multiple photographers, special lighting, and videography will also increase your costs. Ultimately you want to find someone who has a style you love and can provide the number of edited shots you want for a price you can handle. Learn more about hiring a wedding photographer.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
