William arrived promptly, gave a reasonable estimate, broke payments into quarter sized installments, and conducted himself professionally. Furthermore, he went the extra mile taking time to go over with me material costs and unexpected supply needs as needed. William went out of his way to protect the Robin nesting under our porch before he bran painting.

We hired Pat in November for a general handyman project of helping to remove unwanted furniture, stored items, etc from our property. After meeting Pat and discovering that he is also a professional painter, I was relieved of the effort of having to find an additional person to do the painting I had put off. Not only did Pat complete the original project but I added several other tasks. By the time everything on my to do list was completed, Pat had finished several other projects that I hadn't gotten around to. These included: prepping and painting our barn, painting the walls of a staircase, and cutting and installing finish trim around kitchen cupboards. Pat was prompt, clear about expectations and cost, friendly and helpful. We are experienced in project work and I can definitely say that I appreciate that Pat anticipates what is needed and takes the iniative to get the job done. Does not require frequent direction, and was always prompt and dependable. Pat's pricing was right on point and a great value. When he quoted a cost for each additional task I added, the completed job exceeded my expectation and there were no hidden costs. My husband and I feel Pat is a dependable, trustworthy "Handyman Plus" and we will continue to recommend him. Wish I had taken pics to share! We were in a rush to get the work done prior to returning home (another state) and I don't have before and after pics.

I hired John Downey to paint my kitchen cabinets. He is incredibly punctual, responsive and does great work. After day one of meeting him, I decided to cancel all my other meetings and hire him on for all of my future projects (he can do it all!). He has been a tremendous help in organizing my cabinet project as well as helping me envision all the other fun stuff I want to do with my home. He really knows what he is doing and can take you step by step through each project. He is a pleasure to work with and I can honestly say that he will be my go-to guy for home projects from here on out. He can do it all and will give you an honest fair price.

They were prompt, polite and efficient. It took just over a week and a half for repairs to a roof, full house painting, a front porch and a back deck to be painted. Very nice group of guys. They were friendly to my animals, as well, which was important. Would highly recommend.

This crew was awesome. They were extremely professional, reliable, and the work product was outstanding. We had to fire a previous drywaller who made a massive mess in an 1,100 sqft 3br apartment - these folks came in and turned an awful situation into a beautiful finished product without any issues. They fixed the issues caused with the previous crew and never complained once. They were easy to work with, trustworthy, and they did a very nice job fixing and finishing all of the drywall in this house from the 1800's. We liked them so much, we hired them to do all the painting (in this unit and another). Will continue to work with these guys for sure.

JWD Painting painted our exterior last year. We have a Victorian and it was a lot of little details on the trim, so we were very careful about who we hired. I can say with 100% confidence, we were nothing but pleased with the outcome of Jeremy's work. His crew was professional and even had some great tips on selecting our new colors. We still get compliments. Since that work we have hired him for a few small interior projects and again have been very satisfied with the results. Highly recommended by our family!

I hired HDC last summer to put a roof on a house I have in Maine. There were additional issues with the home. I was impressed by Jeff and his crew, so I expanded the scope of the project to include rebuilding one side of the house that was improperly done. Place looks great and with this being an older home Jeff devised a number of innovative solutions. A man of many talents, I then had him reinsulate the roof crawl spaces and shovel my roof in the winter. I am bringing him back to paint the place. Give this guy a shot. Think you will be pleased

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    How much do painters cost?

The national average cost for an interior painter ranges between $450 and $900. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls. Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $200 to $2,500. The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted. Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards. In one area pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much does a painter charge per room?

The cost to paint a room will vary based on the size of the room, the type of paint you select, any ceiling or trim work needed, and any repairs needed. If no repairs or other additional work is needed, painting a room with contractor-grade paint could range from $1 to $2 per square foot, including materials. Selecting a luxury paint (some cost more than $100 per gallon) will certainly increase your house painting costs. Here are some additional examples of average house painting costs, per room:

    • 12x12 room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $125
    • 12x12 room with an 8-foot ceiling: about $100
    • 14x16 master bedroom with a 9-foot ceiling: about $150
    • 14x16 master bedroom with an 8-foot ceiling: about $125
    • 16x16 living room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $175
    • 16x16 living room with a 20-foot ceiling: starting at $225
