I needed some plastering, repairs, a door and a shower curtain installed in two different apartments. All the work was done quickly and thoroughly and we have plans to work together again in the near future. I recommend East Coast Painting!

He did an excellent job for Dad. Dad loves the door and we don't even have to dispose of it. No mess left behind, and no string to hold the door shut anymore.. :). Would definitely hire him again for jobs that come up.

Some say, "A good man is hard to find." Only, in John Phair, "Tim," I found a skilled, very hard-working carpenter with a lot of integrity. John fixed a set of heavy bi-folding kitchen doors for me; doors that two previous carpenters did not repair properly. What is more, John told me that if any problems with the doors recur, he would repair them free of charge. That is what I call integrity.

Karl did an excellent job. I was switching over my home from a rental and preparing for a sale and he took care of everything for me. From replacing doors, painting, refinishing a floor, repairing holes, final cleaning, and applicance haul-away Karl got it done quickly, professionally, and within a reasonable budget. I would definitely work with him again.

They did a fantastic job at my house. I had them do a few random projects including a shower door installation and replacing faucets and a couple other things. Everything came out perfect and they team was very respectful and answered all my questions. Prices are great and the Anthony helped with recommendations to save me money. He answers messages quickly and was able to get the job done quickly. I am in the process of hiring them again to do some more work. Very impressed with ARCS. Thanks!!

Bill McKay and his team did an awesome job on our investment property in Wolfeboro ! We purchased a three family home overlooking the Back Bay. The exterior was in sad shape. Bill and his team transformed the property into the gorgeous "House with the Red Doors" -- drive by and see for yourself. Bill was the epitome of professional to work with -- always in touch on progress, always on time, and extremely hardworking. We're in the process of looking for another investment property and there is no question that Bill is part of our team.

Steve is awesome. He really cares about the quality of his work, and he really seems to love what he does. I hired him to hang barn doors & hang some heavy mirrors in a unit I'm listing on AirBnB, and he ended up taking care of a whole lot of other things as they arose. I already have a list of more projects I'd like to hire him for. As owner of two old buildings I'm so glad to find someone who knows how to handle so many kinds of house issues. I highly recommend him.

I was referred to Johnny Coyne by a fellow contractor for exterior staining and couldn't be more pleased with the work he and his crew did on my South Portland house!! The quality and care they took to properly prepare the exterior of my house for staining not only resulted in a whole new look for my house, it revitalized the neighborhood and definitely reflected in the price when it was sold! In the late summer of 2014, Johnny came over for a free consultation and we examined the entire exterior house. We discussed all the details of power washing, repairing cedar slats, corner boards, and fascia boards along the roof line. He made professional recommendations for the materials that would produce the best outcome, while also being mindful of the budget. He was very easy to talk to and collaborate with, and has a wealth of experience and knowledge that he readily shared from other projects! I chose to purchase the materials for the project, and Johnny was spot on with his measurements and amount of materials needed. He also called to alert me of the Sherwin Williams seasonal sale on stain, which allowed me to buy 10 of quality stain at a significant savings! The before and after pictures show why I couldn't be more pleased with the outcome! Near the end of my renovation, I ran out of steam for painting and called Johnny to see if he and his crew could fit me in to paint the interior window sashes throughout my house. He had a crew come in and within a day did 2 coats on 13 windows and the interior of the front door. Another outstanding job done! I would highly recommend Johnny and his crews for interior and exterior painting, staining and repair work! They were timely, focused, very polite, efficient and left a very clean work site! Johnny was easy to work with and communicate with. He kept me in the loop on any changes as we went along and did not leave me hanging! Thank you for your hard work and helping me make this renovation a success!

JT's Royal Painting stepped in after we experienced a fire at my house. We did not need a room or two painted, but the entire house, both inside and out. It was a very big job and Josh did superior work. I never before saw such close attention to detail. Moreover, Josh is completely trustworthy. He had full reign of the house and we knew he would respect our belongings and lock up the house at the end of the day. He often worked on the weekend to keep the project moving along. I now know what a difference it makes to have a really good paint job. I have had painters do work for me before, but when Josh paints a door, for example, it comes out looking more like a fine piece of furniture. As for the exterior work, I have always had painters tell me that the paint on one wall would bubble up. They would scrape and repaint, though the wall never really looked right. When Josh saw the paint bubbling up on this wall, he explored further and discovered I had a deeper problem involving dry rot. Josh was the first painter who didn't just paint over the problem, but uncovered it. I am so grateful for his expertise. I would highly recommend JT's Royal Painting because it makes a difference when you get quality.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

    Who repairs garage doors?

Garage door repair is a specialized job, which is typically handled by a garage door repair service. Professional garage door repair technicians can test or repair a garage door system and fix cosmetic blemishes on doors. Common requests include help with jammed or inoperable doors, slow or erratic doors, unusual sounds, dents or scrapes on the door, and general system testing. Garage door repair professionals can work on single-car, double-car and RV-size garage doors.

How do you choose a garage door?

When garage door repair isn’t an option — perhaps the current door is beyond fixing or you want to upgrade to a quieter, more energy-efficient model — it’s time to buy a new one. But choosing a garage door is not as simple as it sounds, even when you know the right size for your home. A wide range of materials, styles and finishes are available, and each factor influences the cost. Garage doors are made of aluminum, steel, vinyl, fiberglass, masonite, wood (typically cedar or mahogany), or a composite of several materials. They may be insulated against cold or heat. Traditional and modern styles include raised panel, carriage house or crossbuck. Most styles have window or arch options, and are available in different wood finishes and neutral colors. Because garage doors account for a large part of a home’s exterior, their appearance is usually a homeowner’s top priority. An attractive garage door can increase a home’s curb appeal and resale value.

How much does garage door repair cost?

When a garage door goes off the track, the spring breaks, the door is dented or the garage door opener is on the fritz, a professional garage door repair specialist can help. The cost to have a garage door fixed varies, but the national average cost of garage door repair is $70-$110. The extent of the damage and the size and material of the door will affect the final cost. A garage door repair company generally charges a national average of $80 for a service call, which includes the first hour of labor and service, such as testing and inspecting the garage door and opener. Apart from labor, the garage door repair costs hinge on buying replacements parts. For example, a new spring costs an average of $60. Expect to pay several hundred dollars, though, if the door is beyond repair; a new garage door ranges in price from $200 to $4,000, and most homeowners spend an average of $800-$1,200.

How much does it cost to install a new garage door opener?

Your new garage door opener cost will vary based on the model you purchase and how long installation takes. Typically, installation pros charge by the hour, although if the pro is also selling the garage door opener they may have a flat fee for the product with installation. The national average for new garage door opener costs (with installation) is between $390 and $650, although the national average cost for the opener purchased alone may be in the $150-$300 range. The three most common types of openers are chain-drive, screw-drive and belt-drive. The chain-drive costs the least but makes the most noise. The belt-drive is typically the quietest and the most expensive. You can expect to pay about the same amount for installation for any of the three styles. The lifespan of a garage door opener is approximately 10 years, depending on quality. A pro may provide opener repairs for the cost of their service call fee or they may charge a flat fee, such as $100 for opener repair. Here are some examples of new garage door opener average costs, including installation:

    • Contractor-grade garage door opener with installation: $300.
    • Chain-drive opener with installation and one remote: $350.
    • Belt-drive opener with installation and two remotes: $400
    • Top-of-the-line opener with ¾-horsepower battery backup, belt drive and nearly soundless operation: $475
      • The majority of higher-end garage door openers are “smart” products and will connect via app to your smartphone for remote access.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
