William arrived promptly, gave a reasonable estimate, broke payments into quarter sized installments, and conducted himself professionally. Furthermore, he went the extra mile taking time to go over with me material costs and unexpected supply needs as needed. William went out of his way to protect the Robin nesting under our porch before he bran painting.

Brynjolfur Einarsson is very good at cleaning windows and most things, I really liked the way he worked because what he cleans he makes look great afterwards. I would without hesitation hire him to clean for me and many other people.

I hired John Downey to paint my kitchen cabinets. He is incredibly punctual, responsive and does great work. After day one of meeting him, I decided to cancel all my other meetings and hire him on for all of my future projects (he can do it all!). He has been a tremendous help in organizing my cabinet project as well as helping me envision all the other fun stuff I want to do with my home. He really knows what he is doing and can take you step by step through each project. He is a pleasure to work with and I can honestly say that he will be my go-to guy for home projects from here on out. He can do it all and will give you an honest fair price.

I am a client of CertaPro, and Tom and Pernell patched my kitchen ceiling and computer room ceiling as a result of water damage done during the 2015 snowstorms and resulting ice dams. They came back about a week later and glued panels onto the cabinets and painted not only the ceilings in the two rooms with water damage, but also the living room and hallway because they were all interconnected and needed to be all the same color paint. Everything went well in record time. They cleaned up drop cloths, etc. and left the house in good order. As far as any suggestions of doing something better, I can't think of anything that wasn't considered to complete a perfect job. If I had to do the same job myself, not only would the house be a mess, but it would have taken me at least two weeks longer and ended up with paint on the floors, carpet, curtains, and anything not completely covered. I would highly recommend these gentlemen for any future projects of a similar nature, and tell all my friends by word-of-mouth how skilled and professional their work ethics were performed.

They were prompt, polite and efficient. It took just over a week and a half for repairs to a roof, full house painting, a front porch and a back deck to be painted. Very nice group of guys. They were friendly to my animals, as well, which was important. Would highly recommend.

We hired this crew to do a big drywall job, which we were very happy with. Because that went so well, we hired them to paint two 1,100 sqft 3br apartments in an old house. They were super fast, very reliable, friendly, trustworthy, and the finished product is beautiful. These guys are now our go-to painters!

Gary at Mainepaintworks did a wonderful job painting our home. He came to our house to give us a quote within 2 days of our inquiry and was available to paint the next week. He painted our downstairs in one full day. He also offered to patch holes in the wall. He is professional, responsive, timely and offered a great rate. We are very happy with the paint job and his service. We will not hesitate to hire him again.

I was referred to Johnny Coyne by a fellow contractor for exterior staining and couldn't be more pleased with the work he and his crew did on my South Portland house!! The quality and care they took to properly prepare the exterior of my house for staining not only resulted in a whole new look for my house, it revitalized the neighborhood and definitely reflected in the price when it was sold! In the late summer of 2014, Johnny came over for a free consultation and we examined the entire exterior house. We discussed all the details of power washing, repairing cedar slats, corner boards, and fascia boards along the roof line. He made professional recommendations for the materials that would produce the best outcome, while also being mindful of the budget. He was very easy to talk to and collaborate with, and has a wealth of experience and knowledge that he readily shared from other projects! I chose to purchase the materials for the project, and Johnny was spot on with his measurements and amount of materials needed. He also called to alert me of the Sherwin Williams seasonal sale on stain, which allowed me to buy 10 of quality stain at a significant savings! The before and after pictures show why I couldn't be more pleased with the outcome! Near the end of my renovation, I ran out of steam for painting and called Johnny to see if he and his crew could fit me in to paint the interior window sashes throughout my house. He had a crew come in and within a day did 2 coats on 13 windows and the interior of the front door. Another outstanding job done! I would highly recommend Johnny and his crews for interior and exterior painting, staining and repair work! They were timely, focused, very polite, efficient and left a very clean work site! Johnny was easy to work with and communicate with. He kept me in the loop on any changes as we went along and did not leave me hanging! Thank you for your hard work and helping me make this renovation a success!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do painters cost?

The national average cost for an interior painter ranges between $450 and $900. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls. Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $200 to $2,500. The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted. Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards. In one area pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much does a painter charge per room?

The cost to paint a room will vary based on the size of the room, the type of paint you select, any ceiling or trim work needed, and any repairs needed. If no repairs or other additional work is needed, painting a room with contractor-grade paint could range from $1 to $2 per square foot, including materials. Selecting a luxury paint (some cost more than $100 per gallon) will certainly increase your house painting costs. Here are some additional examples of average house painting costs, per room:

  • 12x12 room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 12x12 room with an 8-foot ceiling: about $100
  • 14x16 master bedroom with a 9-foot ceiling: about $150
  • 14x16 master bedroom with an 8-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 16x16 living room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $175
  • 16x16 living room with a 20-foot ceiling: starting at $225
