Steve got in contact with me immediately and showed up early the next day. I had 5 tasks I needed done in an old house on the market, and he accomplished 4 during the time he was here, installed a stacking on a washer/dryer, spot painting on the outside, fixed a fence and did the lawn. Took on a skylight repair project with some great ideas. Even ran to the hardware store to get something that was missing! He was a godsend! Would recommend highly!

I hired John Downey to paint my kitchen cabinets. He is incredibly punctual, responsive and does great work. After day one of meeting him, I decided to cancel all my other meetings and hire him on for all of my future projects (he can do it all!). He has been a tremendous help in organizing my cabinet project as well as helping me envision all the other fun stuff I want to do with my home. He really knows what he is doing and can take you step by step through each project. He is a pleasure to work with and I can honestly say that he will be my go-to guy for home projects from here on out. He can do it all and will give you an honest fair price.

Reggie is top of the line. He came to my house on the same day I called, and quickly went to work to solve my problem. He also took the time to explain what the problem was, and how he corrected it. And, he told me I could call him if I had any other questions. Who does that anymore. If you have an electrical need, call Reggie!

Andrew and his partner Gary are the best in mid coast Maine. For over 8 years, Stanley Brother have built a bread new "over the garage" apartment, renovated a master bath, put on new decking and replaced all outside trim of our house and installed new carpet in both the living room and bathroom. Their worth is excellent, their timeliness good and their rates quite reasonable. I especially like the tiling work and all finish work... very detailed oriented and they don't take shortcuts.

Tom did a stellar job on a construction project my husband and I needed done at our house. He was on time, friendly and did everything for a very fair price. Not only did Tom Dowd Co. get the job done early, they cleaned up and left everything how it was prior to them arriving. I will totally use Tom and for any future construction needs which will probably be in the near future.

Jeff and his crew put a roof on our ski house in Bethel, ME. We were not able to be on site for most of the job, which could have been nerve wracking, but Jeff kept us updated daily with photos of the progress from his drone. The roof is beautiful, we have had no issues at all, and the price was right.

This was a tear off and replace of 13 squares on a 12/12 pitch. The house is on Great Diamond Island in Casco Bay. Working on an island gets very complicated and includes, barges, ferries, freight delivery and sudden weather changes. Patrick (owner) did most of the work himself and he did an excellent job. Clean up, protection of house, detailed installation of flashings. Somehow he was cheerful the whole time even though all the above complications came in to play. He gave me a price and stuck to it.

Charles fixed a cabinet door (a corner door, a Lazy Susan) when one of the hinges came off. Ordered another hinge and put it back together. It opens & closes perfectly now, like new ! My wired doorbell went kaput and his buddy/ partner got a new one installed in minutes !!!! Works like a charm ! And Charles removed so beautifully the rust on my heating element covers that one of my dear kitties sprayed onto. Bothered me for so long looking at it and embarrassed when guests came over. That rust is all gone now after he scrubbed it away and covered it with a "primer"(?) perhaps (?), then came back to paint it with white Rust Oleum. Every room's heat covers were affected and there is absolutely NO SIGN that the rust was ever there. Another great thing is that Charles & his partner showed-up WHEN THEY SAID THEY WOULD !!!!! How about THAT ?!!!!! PLUS, his bill was extremely reasonable ! PLUS, he's a nice guy. PLUS, he's honest. He did all of the work on days when I was working...still have my tv and everything else !!!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do painters cost?

The national average cost for an interior painter ranges between $450 and $900. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls. Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $200 to $2,500. The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted. Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards. In one area pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much does a painter charge per room?

The cost to paint a room will vary based on the size of the room, the type of paint you select, any ceiling or trim work needed, and any repairs needed. If no repairs or other additional work is needed, painting a room with contractor-grade paint could range from $1 to $2 per square foot, including materials. Selecting a luxury paint (some cost more than $100 per gallon) will certainly increase your house painting costs. Here are some additional examples of average house painting costs, per room:

  • 12x12 room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 12x12 room with an 8-foot ceiling: about $100
  • 14x16 master bedroom with a 9-foot ceiling: about $150
  • 14x16 master bedroom with an 8-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 16x16 living room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $175
  • 16x16 living room with a 20-foot ceiling: starting at $225
