They did a fantastic job -- we had a 4+ hour project and they worked diligently the entire time. Big driveway, sidewalk, back deck and front porch all power washed. They moved furniture off all the areas and then put it all back afterward. Excellent work -- they are very conscientious..... and I am a perfectionist! We would definitely hire them again.

Jeremy did a great job and worked tirelessly despite the unexpected challenge of having to break up a 2000lb chunk of concrete from a porch/sidewalk removal/reinstall. Overall job was very good. Would recommend Jeremy.

We hired Gar to do a couple small projects for us (patch up areas of our basement, install/paint new baseboards in our bathroom). He did such a fantastic job we decided to hire him to turn our screened in porch into a 4 season porch. We have a 100 year old house so it was important that it match the rest of the house. Everyone else we spoke to said it wasn't possible or quoted us outrageous prices. Gar was eager and excited to work with us and had great ideas. He did a fantastic job, stayed within our budget, kept us updated on how the project was progressing and was so easy to work with. I would highly recommend him for any home projects you have!

I was looking for someone that not only could replace my roof, but figure out how to cover my back deck. Al Esser came up with the best idea and I love it. Al had an excellent crew and he continually kept in contact to make sure everything was done to my satisfaction. I highly recommend.

Wouldn't trust anyone else to do renovations to our home! Zack has done so much for us, from moving a set of double doors to the other side of our kitchen, re-siding our house, building a set of bunk beds, and building our new deck! He is the best!

Kurt and Jen were wonderful. We are enjoying the decks and will be having them construct my back porch in the spring. Two wonderful people along with their son. I can't say enough about how good the experience was.

I hired Matt to get my rental home ready for sale, to spruce up the curb appeal and to make a few repairs and improvements to the inside of the house. He pressure washed the house, garage and decks, and gave the front and back decks a long overdue coat of paint. He also cut down and cut up a couple of dead, unwanted trees, and edged the front walkways, keeping the grass cut and taking care of the fall leaves. Inside the house, Matt changed the bedroom light fixtures, re-screened all the storm windows, and installed several bi-fold closet doors, making necessary modifications to fit non-standard door jamb sizes. All-in-all, I am very happy with both the quality of work completed and the time in which it was done.

When Nick built my screened in porch, there were so many people driving by & walking that stopped to look & ask who he worked for. I love that porch, so I ask him to build a deck out back. It is perfect. Now he is going to remodel my kitchen. His crew was nice & cleaned up after themselves. He is very good at what he does.

Great Price and Top Notch Service I just got done working with J & B Improvements during the construction of a new deck, and I have to say I am quite content with my results. I began the process by contacting 4 competing contractors in our area, including J&B Improvements, trying to find out who could give me the best bang for my buck. The J&B guys wound up getting the job due to their excellent price, extensive and up to date licenses, and the professionalism they exuded which some of the other contractors simply did not. In this awful economy, however, the biggest plus in their favor was the affordable quote they gave me. While quality and professionalism is important, unfortunately raw prices played an equally substantial role in helping me decide who to use. I think I got lucky, as this company is one of the few diamonds in the rough that doesn’t suffer in terms of quality despite being the cheaper bidder. After the easy part, came the hard part: actually building the deck. Their workers consistently arrived very early and stayed until the end of the day, they were funny guys who I had some great conversations with. The best part, however, was the fact that I was allowed on the site of the building, which was important to me because I liked making sure the project was going in the right direction. At one point, in the middle of the deck’s construction, I decided I wanted to add something new. I was at first adamant about this, since I thought it would throw the contractor off or cost me a fortune, but actually they were very eager to hear what I wanted and did the accentuation for a very decent rate. I will definitely save J&B Improvements to my little book for my future needs, and I highly recommend this company to anyone who is looking for that rare affordable quality in a market full of sketchy companies, rip-offs, and inappropriate practices.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

        Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
