Dan Ketchum shot wedding videography for our wedding in Plymouth, MI on 8-11-18. I found Dan solely online but through phone calls and many emails I felt comfortable using him for our special day. Dan had a great price and package which he shot approx. 6 hours on our day to compile a full edited video of our day- approx. 40 mins and a highlight clip- approx. 5 mins. We are so happy we went with Dan and videography in general. Our film captures our day with video from photo sessions, our ceremony, and reception. One of the best things was we hardly noticed Dan was even present which provided with very natural shots of the day. I enjoyed not having another vendor to worry about- he simply went on with his job very discreetly and professionally. After the wedding he worked with me to use songs and make edits so the final version is just how we want. It is so special having this forever memory of our day.

Jeffrey Pask is one of the most kindest photographers/videographers out there. He is professional and personable at the same time. If you have a creative/fun idea for your project, he will most-likely always be up for it. Jeffrey helped me start my modeling/acting career by shooting my first photoshoot ever. Since it was my first time, I was super nervous. He saw that I was nervous and made me laugh the whole time with his hilarious jokes. That really reduced the tension of it being my first photoshoot, and after that, I decided I wanted him to be my main for all of my photography needs. If it wasn't for Jeff, I wouldn't have such a great portfolio to show agents and casting directors. He is dedicated and will always make sure that you get the results that you want, even if it entails a 9 hour shoot! ;)

At first I wasn’t sure about hiring 5th Media since they did so many other styles besides weddings. My wife and I hired him to do the photography for our wedding. He was very professional and friendly (which really helps when it comes to comfort levels, especially with the little flower girls). He kept in touch with us. He came to the rehearsal to be prepared for what we had planned so that the wedding day was smooth and went as expected. We gave him a list of a few shots that we really wanted and he got them all as well as a few that were unique. We had our wedding at Crystal Gardens of Southgate, MI. The place is beautiful and he captured that in our pictures. We had the room with the outside patio and gazebo and he took advantage of all of the great scenery the place had to offer. Our wedding and reception was from 4:30 to 11:30 and he was there for majority of the night. He snapped away until the battery ran out, which was after all of the events. He took pictures of our guests, which I didn't expect, but was happy about; The day went by so fast I didn't get a chance to see everybody and some people came from out of state to attend and it has been a while since I've last seen them. I was very impressed with his work. The battery running out was probably the only thing that went wrong, and that was after about 700 pictures were taken, so nothing was missed. I would highly recommend hiring him if you are looking for a someone that knows what they are doing with a camera. A wedding day is not something you want a rookie doing.

I interviewed 9 different wedding photographers for my wedding. Each of them had been in the photo business a long time. Nobody impressed me more than Michelle and Wally Russell, Russell Photography. I liked that I was hiring the owners to do my photographs and that I got to know them when they did my engagement photos. We went with their “Dream Package”. They were worth every penny we spent. I can’t say enough good things about them. They were very reasonably priced. Other photographers wanted thousands more and would provide less. Everything they said they would do for us, they did do. I can tell you Wally calmed my mother down about the wrong wine being delivered and sent one of his assistants to get the correct Chardonnay. It could have been a disaster. The photography was perfect, better than perfect – I did not believe I could look so good in pictures. Our wedding album is the envy of our friends and my sister-in-law. I have so many beautiful memories and my wedding day was great because I went with Russell Photography.

Andrea Mckenzie was our wedding videographer last August, and we couldn't be happier with our results. She did a fabulous job, captured all the special moments I had asked for, and added all the little moments we hadn't even thought of. I love that every wedding anniversary we can re-watch our special day, its something that we shared with family members and friends that could not attend, and something that I can show my children down the road. I was so glad that we ended up going with Andrea, I would ABSOLUTELY recommend her!

Fast Forward Videos was the videographer for my daughter's wedding. Her finished product is better than anything I've seen in this genre. She is very creative and avoids the gimmicky, schmaltzy videos you so typically see for weddings. She created a video that captured the both the fun and the importance of this occasion. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for something original.

From my first contact with Jim at Exciting Productions, I knew we were going to have a great videographer. He was very polite and clear about the services to be provided on our big day. On the day of our wedding, Jim and his supporting staff showed up promptly for the pre ceremony footage. With a wedding being such a stressful day, Jim's friendly personality helped put us at ease. They were able to document our wedding in a very unobtrusive way. We were truly stunned when we saw how much of our wedding they were able to capture in the highlights reel. This we were able to see about a week after the wedding. Having a video of our wedding really helps keep the memories of that special day alive. We fully recommend Exciting Productions for your wedding. You will not be disappointed.

I would highly recommend Josh to others that are in need of a professional wedding videographer.

        Black Garnet Productions

        New To Thumbtack

Here at Black Garnet Productions, we're committed to offering metro Detroit area couples with leading wedding video services at an affordable price. We are a husband and wife team, and were recently a bride and groom ourselves, so we understand how important and special your wedding is, and look forward to discussing your hopes and ideas for how you want to remember and relive your day for the rest of your lives. We didn’t discover our passion for video until we became parents. We shot what seems like millions of videos of our son, and began to edit them to create enjoyable home movies for our whole family. We then started bringing our camera along to friends' weddings who hadn't hired a videographer, and we'd make them a video as a gift. This is how we discovered our true passion. There is nothing like capturing the look on the face of the groom the first time he sees his bride. We love being able to give the gift of feeling butterflies over and over each time a couple watches their video. Allow us to give you the gift of butterflies forever!

          Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

How much is videography for a wedding?

Wedding videography is one thing many couples regret not paying for. It may seem like just another expense during wedding planning, but it’s really special to have a moving memory of your big day. The national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. Pricing can vary depending on wedding length, special film features, the amount of editing required, and how many videographers are needed to cover the event. Many videographers offer packages that provide different levels of service. A very simple wedding documentary could be $600 or more, while a full-scale cinematic experience involving multiple videographers could be $2,500 or more. Here’s an example of average package pricing:

          • Package 1: $1,400
            • Footage during and after the ceremony, including highlights requested by the couple.
            • Two cameras with audio equipment.
            • DVD including a 3- or 4-minute edit to a song of the couple’s choice and a 45- to 50-minute raw edit covering the entire event.
            • Recordings of guests’ good wishes to the couple.
          • Package 2: $1,800
            • Includes everything from Package 1, plus an additional videographer (2 total) and aerial videography.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
