Mike did an excellent job and I would recommended him to anyone looking for custom carpentry! He reconfigured our entertainment center, installed panel wainscoting and installed a gate on our deck - all in a timely fashion and reasonably priced!

Let me start by stating that I have worked with many contractors in my lifetime, and I am not easy impress. Honestly, I am usually left unsatisfied. This was not the case with Gilbert Construction. When John was out for the initial quote, he was punctual and prudent. I informed him that I was bidding out the project to other companies and he was understanding, patient, and respectful of that process. From my initial Thumbtack search to my multiple questions leading up to the job, John was always very responsive. After receiving 3 quotes for my new deck project, John came in at the fairest price. With John's expert input, I even changed the overall plan for the deck to better fit the needs for my family. This option was actually less expensive than the original plan, so it was in no way an upsell. I remain grateful that he cared enough to help me plan the right project to fit our home. He scheduled my job for a Sunday and finished the entire job in 10 hours with him and his other employee. I cannot overstate how impressed I was with their professionalism and quality of work. I had a challenging project and was VERY specific with how I wanted my new deck to curve to fit existing landscaping. He saw my vision and built the new deck EXACTLY how I wanted it. I am a true stickler, and paid very close attention to initial framing and support of the deck when they started to build early in the morning. I am no stranger to home improvement projects, whether I build myself or hire a contractor. This is, without a doubt, one of THE BEST decks I have ever seen built. After construction was completed, we sat down together and he guided me through the best ways to stain, seal, and care for my deck long term. I would highly recommend John Gilbert.

Kurt and Jen were wonderful. We are enjoying the decks and will be having them construct my back porch in the spring. Two wonderful people along with their son. I can't say enough about how good the experience was.

I hired Matt to get my rental home ready for sale, to spruce up the curb appeal and to make a few repairs and improvements to the inside of the house. He pressure washed the house, garage and decks, and gave the front and back decks a long overdue coat of paint. He also cut down and cut up a couple of dead, unwanted trees, and edged the front walkways, keeping the grass cut and taking care of the fall leaves. Inside the house, Matt changed the bedroom light fixtures, re-screened all the storm windows, and installed several bi-fold closet doors, making necessary modifications to fit non-standard door jamb sizes. All-in-all, I am very happy with both the quality of work completed and the time in which it was done.

Rich and Chad were hired to remove my old deck and replace with one more than twice the size of the original. Not only were they wonderful and professional the entire experience, they were also very patient and ensured safety with my 3 little boys who were constantly checking on their work every step of the way. The job was started and comolested prior to our plan and we couldn't be happier!

I recently remodeled my whole house with Nick Eckert running the job. He designed and installed my "Beautiful Walk in shower. The tile work is great. I love it. I asked for a kitchen with a country feel and that is exactly what I got. He framed and finished the master bedroom with an 8' X 8' walk-in closet. He added a private bath for the 2nd bedroom and gave me main floor laundry. I have all new windows and doors. The exterior brick work was altered to accept the new windows. He fixed the roof too. He also removed all of the old Hodge podge shrubbery in my yard and around my house creating a clean fresh look. I recommend Nick for all of your home improvement needs. Next he is building my new decks.

Charles is the real deal. We had started a renovation in our first house and even using Angie's list we were getting flakes, grossly inflated bids, and on our first project hired out poor quality. Charles was originally just going to build our deck but he was professional, well priced, and on time. We were complaining about our other experiences and he asked what else we needed. He helped us with a kitchen renovation and will be working with us on another project here in about a month. So grateful we found him. He will always be our first call!

Jim did quite a bit of restoration work on a 15-year old house that we purchased including replacing the roof and gutters, rebuilding the deck, fixing the attic ventilation system, reinforcing squeaky floors and replacing thermopane windows. He is a meticulous and thoughtful worker and really understands how things are supposed to work. He provides real value to his customers. He will get all of our future business.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
