Pat and Bobby have done 2 jobs for us and we are more than satisfied with the outcome. The first time we hired them was to install a new entry door and to fix our front porch overhang; Pat provided us several solutions based on our financial situation. Although we wanted the most cost-effective solution, Pat made it clear that a cheap fix would only perpetuate the damage (we had rotten fascia boards and a rotten post which caused the whole overhang to sink), Pat made it clear that he only provides professional work without any compromises in quality. We are so happy that they rebuilt the porch overhang now that it has 2 feet of snow covering it. The guys worked almost two full days on the door and the overhang and in between they even helped us with questions which were related to totally different topics. The new front of our house looks so nice and gives us a much safer feeling with all the snow on the roof. The best part happened the next day when Pat contacted us and told us that we overpaid him by $1300 and he would like to return the difference. He told me the total and then broke it down as the labor plus the materials price. I added all those numbers together and overpaid. He could have taken the money and said nothing because clearly I didn't argue about the price. Who does that? Pat does apparently. The second job we called Pat for was our stairway which needed to be redone. After removing the old carpet from the stairs it was clear that the treads needed either to be replaced or sanded and stained excessively. After discussing the pros and cons of either option, we chose to reuse the old treads and handrails. Pat and Bobby spent a whole day in sanding and the next day to install new risers and trim around the stairs. Pat even built a custom made tread for the landing. He explained all necessary steps for the staining and he also organized the necessary brushes and primers for that job. We feel so comfortable with Pats and Bobby's work, and it is always fun having them around. If you are looking for a professional and honest carpenter who can provide high quality solutions based on the available budget, get in contact with Pat and you won't be disappointed!

Wow I can't begin to tell u what an amazing job Harry Kubbe did! He designed and built a Butlers pantry in our dinning room and it is absolutely stunning! He was also very open to do other woodworking jobs through out our home and we also were extremely pleased! I researched many carpenters and I'm so thankful I picked the right one! His rates were extremely fair, about half the price of other carpenters for the same jobs. I would highly recommend Harry Kubbe!!

We wanted to extend our back porch to create an outdoor living space. This meant extending the roof 16 feet and matching the width of the existing roof of 33 feet. The work is in progress and we are very pleased. The workmanship is outstanding and is progressing well. Mr. Stinnett is always on time, cleans up the jobsite each afternoon and stacks material for the next day's use. I would highly recommend Jimmy and crew to any of my friends. As a matter of fact, my plumber, who is a personal friend is working on site, commented, " you found a hell of a carpenter in Jimmy."

We had our main deck completely demolished and rebuilt; we had a second-story deck demolished, a door removed and replaced with drywall; we had a smaller lower level deck rebuilt; we had the slope of a curved bridge modified and refinished. I highly recommend working with Rufino Labra and Labra Design + Build. The most important aspect of our project was demolishing our aging cedar deck overlooking a ravine, adding 120 square feet to it, and adding deck lighting which we had never had. We also needed an unused (except by the raccoons) smaller deck area demolished, the door removed and replaced with drywall. Additionally, we had a curved bridge over a gully leading to our entrance on which we wanted the slope modified to make the tie-in to the landing gentler. Initially we were looking at Trex or Azec (both "faux" wood) for the deck but after some investigation discovered cumaru, a Brazilian hardwood similar to ipe. Rufino was the only contractor we contacted to investigate this possibility, and offered to do the deck in the cumaru for the price of Azec, and included the lighting package at no additional charge. We were also initially considering glass railing panels, but knowing that we live in a wooded area and feed the local birds, Rufino mentioned that the birds might fly into the glass and get hurt or killed, so he gave us the option of stainless steel cable, and we are so glad we opted for that! The finished deck is spectacular! The woodworking detail is amazing. Rufino also offered to install soffit lights at no charge because he knew we would love them. We do! Rufino and his crew showed up every day on time, they worked efficiently and with enormous attention to detail. He has a degree in architecture from Lawrence Tech, so in addition to being an incredibly skilled craftsman he is also artistic and talented. He was in constant communication on any changes or issues (they found carpenter ants had chewed up a lot of the old deck and advised us to call an exterminator -- we did!). They all really went above and beyond, they finished within the time Rufino had estimated despite some rainy days, and we are enormously pleased with the results. We will definitely work with Labra Design + Build in the future.

MM3 has been an amazing carpenter to work with. We had him do trim work around our kitchen, mudroom and bath. Our home is very old; therefore nothing was straight or level. He did an exceptional job working with the “charm” and made things look as if things were straight. The trim looks fantastic. MM3 also came back a couple weeks after to finish our fireplace mantle. Again, we are very happy with the finished product. MM3 worked with our schedule, showed up to the jobs on time, and finished the jobs in respectable time. I would highly recommend MM3 for any finished carpenter work!

I hired Rob about 6 months ago to help with framing and carpentry projects while building my house. Being a Journeyman Plumber myself, and someone who takes pride in their work, I can tell you that Robs attention to detail and workmanship is second to none. He is very timely, dependable, and a straight shooter with no excuses. Hes was able to do everything from major framing to resizing bedroom closets. If you are looking for a hard working carpenter to get those projects done around your house, Rob should definitely be your first call.

The only reason I am reticent to give this review is that I'm afraid Ray will be getting so much business that he won't have time for more future jobs with me. Ray is an excellent person to have help with my large house. In addition to his many skills, he is reliable and honest. Honesty is a big one with me as I'm not always around. He is one of the few really intelligent Handiman/ skilled carpenters that I have had contact with. He has ideas about how to do projects. His forte is carpentry work. He has built bookcases with perfectly rounded edges. Put in float floors, fixed an ailing balcony/ deck and rehung doors. He paints, fixes plumbing, vacuums, dishwashers, etc. When I am away, he pretty much property manages my house. I hope he will do some landscaping work in the spring. . . I'm very impressed. I can't imagine that you won't be.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How much does it cost to have kitchen cabinets installed?

In any kitchen, the cabinets are the main focus, so you want to make sure new or replacement cabinets are installed correctly. A professional carpenter can properly, securely mount new cabinets to the wall; the national average cost for this service is $7,725, although the cost varies widely depending on the type of cabinets, their material and their size, and the accessories you add. A typical fee is $70 per linear foot to remove existing cabinets and assemble and install new ones; the cost is less if you do the demolition and removal yourself. Stock cabinets are the least expensive to have installed, ranging from $75 to $400 each; semi-custom cabinets range from $150 to $900 each; and custom cabinets cost from $500 to $1,400 each. Wood cabinets are more expensive than those made from plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and finished with a laminate. Wood cabinets range in cost from $80 to $160 per linear foot. Laminate-finished cabinets cost $35 to $75 per linear foot, on average.
