Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up a consultation with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic is by using virtual, online tools. Start by performing an online search for local house cleaners. Message them to set up either a phone call or video call to perform a consultation. During this call, they can give you recommendations and may be able to estimate the cost of their services. Be sure to discuss whether they accept virtual payments and any precautions they can take to perform the job safely.

Can I use digital payments to pay for house cleaning?

Not only do many house cleaners accept digital payments through platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Square Cash, Google Pay, Venmo and more, but this may become more common as the COVID-19 pandemic pushes more service workers to digitize. This means you can pay your house cleaner without making physical contact or handling money.

If cleaning is absolutely essential during the current crisis, consult with the house cleaner beforehand to ensure a safe monetary transaction that complies with current government guidelines and recommendations for social distancing.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a house cleaner when social distancing?

If you hire a house cleaner to clean the inside of your home, do not make physical contact. Stay at least 6 feet apart at all times, sanitize any surfaces after cleaning and wash your hands thoroughly. Exchange all payments digitally instead of with cash. When contacting a house cleaner, put a plan in place to ensure everyone's safety.

How can I find out if a house cleaner is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

A house cleaner is generally not considered an essential service sector during the coronavirus pandemic. To find out which services are considered essential, visit your city and state government, and read their guidelines. A national list of essential service providers can be found on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 site. This webpage lists 16 different infrastructure sectors considered to be essential. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a house cleaner need to enter my home?

Yes, in almost all cases a house cleaner needs to enter your home. However, a cleaner may not need to enter your home if they are solely cleaning outside areas.

There may be some cases in which a cleaner is necessary. If so, take precautions — avoid being in the same room, make no physical contact, sanitize any surfaces and pay through a digital service instead of using cash.

Do house cleaners offer remote or virtual services?

House cleaning is generally done in person, but some may be willing to offer remote services. If you find a house cleaner’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, contact the pro to talk about your options.

If you’d rather hire a house cleaner to clean your home when the pandemic is over, you may be able to book an appointment at a later date. Start by comparing local house cleaners in your area side-by-side.

Should I hire a move-out cleaning service or do it myself?

You may benefit from hiring a professional move-out cleaning service, depending on your budget, time frame and whether you will be getting a deposit back. Hiring a cleaning service takes the stress out of your move. But if you’ve had your house regularly deep-cleaned, or if your landlord will charge you for cleaning anyway, you can save costs by DIY-ing it.

What is the difference between a housekeeper and a house cleaner?

Although some house cleaning and housekeeping duties might overlap, a house cleaner is charged with the top-to-bottom cleaning of a home. House cleaner duties typically include basic and deep house cleaning, such as washing and sanitizing countertops, floors, tubs, toilets, kitchens and more.

Housekeepers or maids are hired to lightly clean and maintain certain aspects of the home. This might include dusting, washing dishes, changing sheets, doing some meal preparation and restocking the client’s groceries and personal care products.

It’s also worth noting that a housekeeper or maid is usually one individual employed to a home (sometimes hired as a live-in), while a house cleaner is oftentimes accompanied by a team of cleaners.

What are the different types of house cleaning services I can get?

There are several services offered by professional house cleaning companies, each suited for a different purpose. These services include:

  • Standard cleaning, which is a basic cleaning typically done on a weekly or monthly basis;
  • Deep cleaning, which is a detailed cleaning with more intensive work than a standard clean;
  • Move-in and move-out cleaning, which is a detailed service preparing a home for residents moving in or out;
  • Green house cleaning, which is a service that uses eco-friendly cleaning supplies and products.

Aside from the type of cleaning services available, homeowners may also choose daily, weekly, monthly or one-time services.

How much should you tip maids or cleaning services?

Tipping between 15 and 20 percent is considered an appropriate tip for maids and house cleaners — just as it would with a barber, food delivery driver or taxi operator. During the holidays, you might want to consider tipping a bit more.

It’s important to note that some housekeeping and maid services might include a tip within the service fee, which should be explained to you in the service contract. Talk to house cleaners in your area to find out what's included in their fees.

Amy was excellent to work with, she is extremely thorough and addresses all your concerns. Amy was easy to work with in terms of rescheduling the deep cleaning. During the initial walk through of the house, she was extremely detail oriented and asked about my specific areas of concern ( Kitchen and Bathrooms). She arrived on time with her co-worker and did an excellent job . The bathrooms, walls and the rooms were spotless. The kitchen looked beautiful, if there was an area I wanted cleaned more, she was willing to work with me. I highly recommend A-1 cleaning and have scheduled them for monthly cleaning as well. My family who came to visit loved the clean house :-)

I recently hired Night and Day cleaning to clean my home. Melanie and Justine were very friendly and professional. They took notes regarding what was expected. They bring their own cleaning supplies. I was completely thrilled with the job they did. Monday afternoon will now be my favorite day to come from work as my house will be perfectly cleaned and I will no longer have to scramble to get it done myself! Thanks ladies! I would definitely recommend them for residential or business use.

I found Michele while searching for a house cleaner on Thumbtack. She had great reviews which are WELL deserved! I hired Michele to do a deep cleaning of my 1600 sq ft home. Michele is prompt to communicate, punctual, and does a VERY thorough job cleaning. Michele, her Aunt, and her nephew arrived at my home at 8 AM and cleaned NON STOP till 3:30. My deep cleaning job included washing windows inside and out, cleaning window gutter rails, cleaning light fixtures, baseboards, oven, stove, fridge, microwave, 3 bathrooms, dusting, sweeping, and mopping. I HIGHLY recommended Michele and her crew!

First time ever to have a house cleaner and we were very pleased. Michele does an outstanding job. She’s punctual, efficient, works the entire time and stays focused on her job. There was nothing left undone. I’m pretty picky but could find nothing to pick on with Michele’s work. Highly recommend.
