I had my interior trim and doors installed and painted. I had started the process a couple years ago, but was having difficulty finishing the project with 3 young boys and all there activities. I hired Adventure 25 to come out and give a bid and they could start the project in about a week. The first part of the process was to finish the trim work and rip all the basement trim out and a couple of doors that had not been replaced yet. The trim work was done in a couple of days. The painting was delayed because of rainy weather. This is where the stress begins. The prep work that comes before painting can be a lot of work and time consuming. There was little to no prep of the trim. Lots of missed nail holes, lots of missed caulking and the stuff that was done was very poor. I was told that this is high quality paint and it will cover in one coat. I know better. It can take several coats to make the white trim look good. There was paint all over the wood floors, tile in kitchen, paint on the cabinets, paint on my trees outside, paint on the concrete driveway, paint on my fire pit. There seemed to be no care in the world. Jaimie kept telling me that we are not painters. I understand that but my 5 year could of done better. It was supposed to be rolled and instead there was pain brush marks all the trim. The one painter said he thought it would look cute to but swirls with his brush on the top of all the door trims. I met with Jaimie 4 different times to which he said how do I make this right? I would go through things with him and come home at the end of the day to find more of a mess and continued poor quality work. I have never seen anything like this. He would say it would be fixed but I don't think he would watch over his workers and forget to tell them things. I am stressed out beyond believe as my hope was to have this finished to spend more time with my kids. Instead I have to redo most of it. I had another contractor come out and told me it would be about 10 thousand to fix. He never had seen such poor quality work. I would not recommend him to my worst enemy. Very nice person but I think he was over his head and always in a rush, hence the poor quality work. Since I cant pay 10 thousand to someone to fix it, I am now looking at a year or so to fix my trim. Very frustrated and angry customer.

Larry installed a bathroom fan/light for us, including building a soffit (framing, drywall, taping/mud), wiring, and dealing with our vinyl siding. He worked with us to pick out the equipment we wanted. He talked us through his plans, listened to us, and answered our questions. When the day of the installation came, he didn't stop moving, so focused on the job. It was a smooth process from getting an estimate, scheduling the date, doing the job, through payment. We'd recommend Larry and will keep his number handy for future jobs.

Julio was great to work with. I was in need of a subcontractor for a big drywall job and he was there to size up the job the next day and got it started immediately. The job was completed way before I thought it would be and the work quality was great. Very enjoyable guy to work with.

I hired Nick (Top Notch Roofing) and his team to reroof my house in September 2016. Overall I was satisfied with the job that was done. Nick is patient, creative, and committed to customer satisfaction. My project included working with a second company to insulate the roof at the same time that Nick's team was re-roofing my house. When the insulation company increased the scope of their work at the last minute, Nick was flexible to accommodate those changes. He also stepped up with a plan that would keep the project on time. There was minor damage to the inside of the house from the roofing work but Nick was accommodating in making those repairs. I received estimates from five roofing contractors and I found Top Notch Roofing to be price competitive. I recommend Top Notch Roofing. Nick takes pride in what he does. You will be well cared for.

We had Apex evaluate some water damage at our business. They proposed a couple of different solutions before beginning the job, depending upon whether there was more/less damage than they expected to find. Once the plan was in determined, they executed the job quickly. They repaired some damage wood framing and then bricked up a former window that had not been sealed properly in the past. The work looks good (hidden exterior on commercial building, so beauty and detail weren't necessary) and was fairly priced. Communication was pretty good, but there were a few times where I had to reach out leading up to starting the project, to get details about where in the process we were. Overall, I am satisfied with the work and would use Apex again.

I am extremely satisfied with this contractor. Ken, the owner, convinced me to give them a shot after I was discouraged speaking with other contractors. He and Chris were willing to provide me a quote for exactly what I wanted for fair price. Other contractors tried to sell me on products that were either not to my taste or seemed inferior in quality. Homestead let me choose exactly what I wanted. Will did a great job from beginning to end. He answered all my questions and kept me in the loop step-by-step. The tile work on the floor and tub surround looks like a work of art. I would recommend Homestead to anyone who knows what they want and wants it done professionally at a fair price.

We were in the process of selling our house and had some inspection issues to resolve so our buyer's FHA loan would be approved. I posted a bid request here on Thumbtack and was immediately provided several quotes from varying contractors. However, I chose Prima Construction based on their good reviews and the fact that it was a woman-owned business. The work to be completed was drywalling the furnace and water heater metal pipes, air conditioner pipes and abandoned furnace flue in garage with fireproof framing. Kim provided a reasonable quote and arrived promptly on the day she scheduled the work. Her partner and her both worked for about 8 hours the first day and then again for a few more hours the next day. I'm very satisfied with the quality work and careful attention to detail they put into this small project. I highly recommend them for their hard work and professionalism and will definitely consider them for other projects. Thank you Prima Construction!

The project went really well! Demolition was done quickly and every effort was made to keep the mess to a minimum by tarping off the adjacent areas and cleaning and vacuuming up afterwards. All of the workers on the project were friendly, professional, and did high quality work. When problems came up during the project, Ryan addressed them right away and didn't rest until we were satisfied with the results - even if it meant calling someone to re-do something. I was very impressed with this - and the fact that everyone involved was cheerful, courteous, and professional during the whole process! Remodeling is never easy or stress free - but working with Ryan and his various subcontractors made it as easy and painless as it could possibly be! And the results were beautiful!

Very happy and would recommend. He had to deal with some inconvenient circumstances working in a downtown building but never complained and did a great job. Also, he was always on time, which is rare for a contractor and makes a big difference for me.

Gordy took on my basement for me. This involved a lot of work, patching the foundation, moving pipes, electrical work, installing new windows, framing, spray foam and sheetrocking. Throughout the entire process, he has always kept me up to date on everything and is very professional, same with the plumber and electrician. Gordy has also been just great to work with. I could not say enough good things about the work and the process. I will for sure be hiring him again in the future for other house projects.

Anton Remodeling came out the same day for a bid. He provided everything I could do and scaled it back to what I wanted for now within my budget. The job was basically fixing what another person's terrible job. Anton was creative and made everything look nice. Since I've had terrible experiences hiring contractors, I'm happy to say I found Anton Remodeling and looking forward to hiring again for future projects. The neighbors already said the would hire after seeing the before and after. Thank you again for your hard work and quick turnaround.

We had a ugly unfinished basement with a furnace in the middle of the room. After speaking with multiple contractors we selected Dpenn construction. David was able to creat a floor plan to get that out of the way, now we have a beautiful basement (bedroom, washroom, and bathroom with a walk-in shower). David was easy to work with, honest with pricing and scope of work, and we feel like we got a great value out of the work that was done. Would highly recommend.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
