Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

Is it cheaper to move your stuff or buy new stuff?

It often makes more financial sense to buy new stuff when you have the chance to sell furniture to offset the cost. The cost of moving your current furniture can sometimes be more than buying new things, particularly if the furniture is large or cumbersome to move. You can sell furniture online, or make a furniture donation and deduct it from your taxes (if it qualifies as a charitable contribution). Some places near you may even offer free furniture pickup when you choose to donate.

If you have valuable furniture that would be costly to replace, however, it may be cheaper to move them. To find out which option is best for you, contact professional movers in your area to receive quotes and estimates.

We had heavy furniture to move from our apartment on 3rd floor to our first home. We looked around the area and figured to hire First Priority Movers based on the positive reviews seen on the site so far. Zubz and his fellow colleague made the move really seamless and smooth and ensured all our items are in good condition as part of the move. The cost of the move is equivalent to the average hourly rate in the area but what impressed us the most of the care taken into ensuring our furniture remains in good state during the entire move They helped in both assembling and dissembling furniture which was a big relief for us since the bed and couch is very time consuming to put together. In addition to the smooth move, Zubz and his team are really friendly and communication is among the best I have seen - both prior to hiring them upto the end of the move Overall we are pleased with our decision to hire First Priority Movers and we highly recommend to use their service Thanks, Gao & Ashish

They did a real good job on our moving. Our move was planned for 2 days and they were very flexible with our request. They were very punctual and professional throughout 2 days moving for us. I value the communication and their responsiveness the most. They are always there if you have any questions. Family owned business means everyone works as hard as they all own the company. I am definitely recommending them to my family members and friends!

It was my first time hiring a moving company, and the move went great. Unfortunately, the elevator in the apartment building I moved to is really far from the unit so moving into the new place took longer than expected. The guys did a great job though, and they were friendly and helpful with everything. There's no way I could have done it myself. I'm about 4/5 unpacked, including most of the fragile stuff, everything is in good condition and nothing is broken. The only thing that would have made four stars into five is that they charged time for the trip from their shop to my old place, and from my new place back to their shop. I read about this, they told me about it, and so I knew about this beforehand, but it still felt strange paying the bill for that. It's my first time using a moving company so I don't really have anything to compare it to, but I've heard moving company horror stories from friends and family and these guys are definitely NOT that! Hedberg movers were very professional, as fast as one could expect, they kept both places clean, and my stuff undamaged. The extra few bucks was worth it. I can definitely give a good recommendation to choose Hedberg.

I had an entire house that needed everything out and moved to a new home. Rico and Shaq took the job and were onsite the next day. The gentleman they moved out is 75 yrs old and really let the house go, everything in pretty rough shape. Rico and Shaq got to work and treated everything as if it were their own. They made sure to move everything it and didn’t scuff the walls, they even finished early. Professional, organized, and very attentive. I have another project and I am hiring them for it. Thank you Rico.

Made moving from my one bedroom apt a breeze, I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for help moving, disassembling, or assembling furniture. (They put together a 5 piece table set, a sofa, a recliner, 3 bar stools, 3 accent chairs, one bookshelf, a bed frame with a incredibly heavy purple mattress, and a shower stool) They also helped me pick up and transport a couch from a store after getting all of the stuff in my apartment moved. This ended up being about 11.5 hours of work and they worked hard the whole time!

Both gentlemen were very careful to move my furniture across the hall being mindful of my freshly painted walls and careful with my furniture. If I were to admit to being dissatisfied with anything it would be the price for 1 hours work. They arrived at 11:50 (50 min.) late. $75.00 more than what Kevin's Thumbtack listing states. $99.00 per hour is what is listed and he charged me $175.00. for 1 hours work. I felt like it was a bait and switch. I appreciated them being available on such short notice and again they were careful when moving my furniture but $175.00 for exactly one hour of work? I am a senior on a fixed income and actually felt somewhat taken advantage of. It was a simple move, no stairs, no loading or unloading, no packing or boxing up personal items, just moving furniture literally across the hall. Am I being unrealistic?

For the price I am very satisfied with my choice. The office was easy to work with, the movers were friendly and helpful. They were maybe a little slower and less experienced than some of the more expensive companies might provide, but I'm happy I chose On Call Services overall.

They were open on Sunday, did a great job of setting up the appointment. We changed the day and time on them rather abruptly and they were very accommodating to that also. Their intro email was very professional, and the three guys they sent were all very nice and professional. What I really liked was at the end of the move, the crew gathered around and all clocked out in front of us on their cellphones, essentially letting us see that we were done being charged, and that we would billed for the time up until then. My only miff was the price was a bit more than advertised on Thumbtack due to the day we chose, but that wasn't their fault, I just didn't read the fine print. All in all, great experience and will consider them again for any future local moves.

Excellent experience. They're very responsive, whenever I messaged them I got a prompt response. The work was done professionally and quickly and I appreciate the invoice was basic and there weren't extra fees. Very easy to pay online and you can even use a credit card. This was my first time hiring movers and everything was like I imagined it would be. Thank you guys!

I needed a mover in short notice and Truecare was available. They gave me a 2 hour window of arrival time and before that time came Tyrell called and said because of the thunderstorms they were running behind. I appreciated the phone call. They were late but it was understandable. When they came they did a great job and were quick and handled my property safely. I would use this company again.

Their communication was above and beyond great. They arrived on time and began working immediately. They were willing to stay for an additional paid hour. The only reason we docked the star we did is because A Lot of our breakable items (like tv stand, mugs, and picture frames) were in fact broken by the movers. Their dedication to get us set up in our new home (on the 3rd floor) was very good.
