Nicole did the photography for my wedding. She arrived at the venue on time. Although things were hectic as we were working to finish getting ourselves and the venue ready, Nicole was great about working around that. I think how the shots of my mother, sister, and bridesmaid lacing me into my gown look like we are calm and collected when that was actually super stressful speak a lot to her skills. Though we were rushed for family shots, Nicole got quality photos. She made sure to capture all the important moments of the ceremony and reception with nice candids. My wedding was on a Saturday. The Facebook sneak peek was up Monday, online gallery Tuesday, and the USB stick with all the photos was mailed within 2 weeks of the event.

We did an engagement session and our whole experience was fantastic! We had no idea of the kind of pictures we wanted to take and Crystal took control of the whole thing and we ended up with amazing shots! Got the edited pictures back within a week or not long after and had sneak peeks back the same day! We greatly enjoyed the whole session and were so happy with the final product! Already booked her for our wedding day too! Definitely recommend going with Crystal for any special pictures!

Since this is my first experience with graphic arts and cover design, I really have nothing to compare my experience with. However, since first impressions are lasting ones, I will say that I have been very impressed and pleased with Kristine's work. She took my original idea and expanded on it, and the result was a great book cover. Look at her portfolio online; I believe it speaks highly of her work. I recommend her work to anyone, and will certainly be using Exodus for my next book.

Kevin has conceived and produced two documentary pieces for my publishing company, and the work has been beautifully executed, on time, and on budget. He's a rare talent in that he's both a wordsmith and a visual artist. More than that, he's just an excellent, compassionate human being. I plan to keep hiring him, again and again.

I am writing a book and needed help with line editing. Homegrown Communications responded quickly. We met and she turned around the first chapter quickly. I was very pleased with her work and will use her for additional editing.

Learning is a very personal and rewarding experience, one that can shape who we are, and what we will become. Mark Banker was one of the most influential, dynamic and respectful teachers I have ever had. Each and every day I would look forward to going to school. In Marks dynamic teaching style I remember learning history not only through a book, but also through song. This instilled a life long love of history, to this day my book shelf is overflowing with history books. Due to Marks Military service, he was able to travel to many places. I recall sitting purely enthralled while hearing about all the amazing places he had been to. Mark set up an opportunity for his class to learn about a different culture by experiencing Lebanese food from a local restaurant. Little did he know, but this experience has instilled a life long love of traveling for me. As well as a respect for cultures outside of my own. All teachers educate, but it takes a special teacher to inspire. As a teacher or tutor you will not find a better man for the job. Capable and attentive, Mark is willing to put in the time necessary to help any student understand the concept. I would highly recommend his services, you will not be disappointed.

Due North took my almost bankrupt e-commerce site from the depths of the web (5th page) right to the very top of Google all in about 2 months. They were so transparent and honest with what and how they were doing it, it was great. Right from the start, I could tell they really knew their stuff. I was grateful to be one of their first customers because with the kind of results they're getting, I'd book them while you can! Really though, I went from zero visitors and sales from my website to over 600 daily visitors and at least 50 sales a day, which in my field is a lot of profit. They paid for themselves 100 times over and I'm excited to hear more about their successes because they are such nice people!

We had Kimberly create six 2-3 minute animations describing key concepts from a book that we were re-working into a "enhanced" e-book version. She worked quickly, was always positive and professional, and did fantastic work - we're extremely happy with the results. She took our very rough storyboards and brought them to life in a charming manner - adding creative touches when needed. Truly a great experience.

Paul went above and beyond to provide me with quality work on my book! He took a personal interest in my book and wanted to make sure that not only would I be happy with it but that my readers would also be very happy with it. The graphics were perfect from front to back and the pages of the book flowed after he organized the fonts and chapters! Paul turned my words on paper into a work of art which I can now call my very first book!

I have retained Johnson Creative on a number of projects involving writing, editing, layout, design, photography and publishing. I have always been impressed with the vision, creativity and style that Shelley Johnson brings to a project. I always count on her to turn my thoughts and ideas into beautiful finished projects. You will find Shelley to be smart and personable. She has built me web pages, and designed and produced marketing pieces that get results. She is the first person I call whenever a creative project comes up.

It is with great enthusiasm that I recommend Mark Lambertson for his amazing graphic design and website work. I first met Mark while working at Regent University; however, it wasn’t until Mark worked on my company logo and stationary package that I realized his incredible creative talent, his diligent efforts and his willingness to work on any project. It was during that time that I saw Mark truly in action. With only a vague company description and thoughts I shared via email, Mark was able to design a professional logo that truly exceeded my expectations. In fact, Mark did more than just create a logo he made my dream come alive right before my eyes! Thanks to Mark I now have a logo with a story that makes me smile every time I see it. Most recently, Mark designed a book cover for my latest project that is proudly displayed on my Web site. A true work of art from a seriously talented individual!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

    • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
    • Strong writing skills.
    • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
    • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
    • Expertise in your target area.
    • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

    • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
    • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
