Nick did a great job on a pretty big job in my new home. He painted all the trim and windows white, and then the walls a shade of white. He was efficient, friendly and had great attention to detail. I really appreciated that he coached me through the process and helped pick out the right paint and provided suggestions on how to get the job done. He also moved everything around for me and required very little hand holding. It was nice to just know he was getting the job done. I actually had to travel the last few days he was finishing the project and got to come home to a freshly painted home. I was so impressed, it barely looked like the same home. I'm already planning to have him come back for a few other projects. Pics coming soon!

Jeremy Johnson with Klean Windows cleaned our clogged gutters. He was able to provide a quote and complete the service in 2 days. One of the gutters was still clogged after the initial service but Jeremy came out the next morning to fix it at no extra charge. We would/will use Klean Windows in the future.

Aaron was very responsive for a project that I needed to be done quickly. We were able to schedule something right away. He is also trustworthy. Because I was out of town at the time of the project, I gave him the garage code to the location. While painting, he kept me updated via text messages and sent me pictures of the final result. The project included painting a yellow/orange kitchen/dining room to a more neutral color and adding a layer of white paint to some window and stairs trim. I was quite happy with his work and would hire him again in a heartbeat.

I am a landlord that lives out of the state of Minnesota. My tenant needed several repairs to be done in my townhouse in Columbia Heights, MN. I got in contact with Steve who was very friendly and prompt. I talked to him that night about the repairs. He said he would be able to complete the task. The kitchen sink garbage disposal needed to be fixed along with several other projects around the house (changing sink faucet, dryer vent, window screen, lights etc). He got everything done the next day. He truly lived up to his name! The price he charged was very fair as well. He sent me pictures of the projects via text and also emailed me additional pictures and receipts for the supplies. Thank you Steve for being so honest, trustworthy and reliable! I will not hesitate to call upon him again in the future.

Gave us a window and showed up right within that time. After discussing our issue on the phone, they quoted us a price that was both fair and ended up staying true to their original quote. The plumber that showed up was extremely professional and did a great job. 10 out of 10, will use again!

Barry repaired a kitchen window in my home. In spite of it being a seventeen year old window and challenging to get the correct part, he was very professional and did not vary from his first estimate to get the job done. I would reach out to him again and highly recommend Barry to others.

It was a very good experience working with Jam Handyman on my small condominium’s masonry work. We had a brick archway above an exterior window removed and replaced. He was prompt in assessing the work, providing a bid, scheduling the project, and doing the work. Additionally, he completed the work with some time to spare so did a few extra tuck-pointing areas around the building outside walls – all while coming in almost 10% under the original quote. If needed, we would gladly work with Jam and his team again!

Julio switched out some peeling linoleum on my kitchen floor last year to beautiful tiles that I picked out. It looks gorgeous now! He does expert work, and attends to the small details. I have an older house, and some of the windows need to be replaced. Several weeks ago, Julio installed replacement windows and built new frames for my kitchen windows, insulated them, and painted the trim to match. I can't believe how beautiful they look; I am so happy!

See for yourself. Could not be more satisfied. This is just the front. The backside got even more work to include a patio door, lighting, deck, and new cement work for a patio and sidewalk. BARC also took care of some badly needed electrical work, & chimney repair. The quality of the windows is unmatched and comes with a lifetime guarantee. (Window issues solved forever). My home, to include the garage, is pretty much maintenance free now with the new siding, windows and gutters. Best part is the whole process, aside from really quality workmanship, was how quickly this big job was completed. It never felt like a rush job, and it didn't drag on either. These guys stuck to their projected time frame and got to work to complete the project. Digging into this project, a couple of fairly serious issues in the existing structure became apparent, water damage rotted a garage wall, and ants were making a home in the living room wall. BARC fixed these issues without a losing time or cleaning out my checking account. If you want windows, or a couple of up-dates, they can take care of you. If it is a major overhaul with unforeseen issues, they still take care of you. Keeping all this work coordinated, me updated, and always available for any questions, concerns, thoughts was Jim McCrank. The guy is really easy to work with and none of that "slick salesman" nonsense. So pretty impressed with BARC from my first contact with them all the way through the process and the finished work. Very satisfied on my end and highly recommend BARC

Kellington Remodeling installed a new entrance door for me. Chuck came to my home and looked at my existing door and gave me a very fair price for the installation of a new door. Communcation throughout the process made me confident I would be happy with the finished product. Two people showed up to install the door. They were very professional and friendly. The work was completed quicker than expected and looks great. There were a couple aesthetic items that I think could have been done a little better but overall I think they did a great job. They cleaned everything well and you couldn't even tell they were there (except for the new door!). Lastly, a couple of days after the work was complete Chuck e-mailed me to make sure I was happy with everything. They did a great job for a fair price. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to others.

The project was a siding replacement for house and garage. Half of the house is two floors. In total there was about 2400 square feet of floor. We used heavy duty vinyl siding. There were a lot of lights, doors, windows, corners, etc to work around. The crew did excellent work meeting these challanges. Additionally, we went with full metal cladding for all window & door trim as well as fascia, and veranda support structure. The metal cladding was formed on site and perfectly fit everything it was applied to. The crew was here at 7:00 am ready to start and worked till after 6:30 pm. Mr. Lessard was here most of the time when he wasn't retrieving additional materials that were needed as the work progressed. The result was a project that went smoothly from start to finish. It is now a year later and there have been no problems due to winter weather or spring storms. We are totally happy with the results and have no regrets for choosing to go with Tier1 Restoration.

Our window AC stopped working on a Friday of a steamy hot weekend. I submitted my job "after hours" on Friday and John replied quickly and came out Saturday morning to install our new unit. We are very pleased with the weekend service and with the actual work done. John was very friendly and easy to work with. I expect we'll be contracting him again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
