Wes McDaniel says, "While working with Chris McDaniel, Had them do numerous projects for my house. Started with our main interior living room wall creating room because it created way more depth, while bringing a decorative wall to the space. We had them do some 8 shiplap. Being that it turned out so well, we consulted in Chris to see what the options would be to find the space that could be most utilized for a pantry that would also be the most functional. He came up with a plan that still made everything flow, while continuing to hold the open concept value of our upstairs living that we wished to hold onto. After both projects turning out amazing, we decided to consult with them about our deck. We presented them with the idea of what we wanted, and they went to work. Within hours we had a design and multiple choices of how we wanted our deck. We settled with a 20x20 square deck due to its functionality and how we wanted to use our outdoor entertaining space. Shortly after that, we decided that we wanted to double our outdoor entertaining space and instantly called Chris at Sota Ridge. We told him we wanted a space that was large enough to entertain a large group and would like something other then the box cutter slab that you see under every deck! He came back with many options that we were pleased with and decided that a cost effective option for us would be to have cylindrical corners on the outer corners. Working with them has been nothing short of amazing. Posting pics so check those out! When we decide to dive into our next round of projects, I know who I will be calling!"See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to get the outside of your house painted?

You can expect to pay around $2,535 to get the outside of your house painted, though this cost will increase with larger house sizes (and decrease with smaller ones). The average hourly rate for exterior painters is $45 and ranges from $25-$75.

Wood, brick, stucco, vinyl, aluminum and stone each have their own set of demands. Contact exterior painters near you to get a detailed cost estimate for your house.

How many coats of paint does the exterior of a house need?

Your house’s exterior will likely need two coats of paint. With two coats, your house will look more even and solid in color and will be better protected from moisture and the elements. The painting should always occur over a primed and well-prepared surface.

What colors should I paint my house exterior?

You have many options when it comes to paint colors. For example, an off-white creates a traditional look, and it looks great with a bright door to contrast it. Yellow is a happy color that, while light blue is reminiscent of an oceanfront style. Gray houses are also on trend, providing a classy and neutral tone that remains warm and inviting.

How often should you paint your house's exterior?

Expert opinion is mixed, but the general range is five to 10 years. However, this depends on many factors. Houses in harsh climates with extreme temperatures, lots of dust or ice or intense sunlight may need more frequent paint jobs than those in temperate climates. Also, wood houses will need new paint more often due to the changes within the wood itself. You should also consider painting the outside of your house if you plan to sell it.

What is the best exterior house paint?

Acrylic paints are generally considered good options for today’s home exterior paint jobs. You can also choose an oil-based or latex (water-based) paint. Also, look into specialty paints for your doors, roof, gutters, siding and other exterior surfaces.

Can I use digital payments to pay for painting services?

Many painters accept digital payments through Venmo, Square Cash, Google Pay, PayPal, Zelle and others. Due to COVID-19, others may quickly adopt this technology to maintain social distancing practices and follow health recommendations.

Contact professionals beforehand to ensure they’re able to accept digital payments and continue to follow safety guidelines throughout your interactions. Compare local interior and exterior painters’ profiles to see which types of payments they accept.

What questions should I ask an exterior painter?

While painters’ online profiles provide helpful customer reviews and other information, it’s still important to ask the right questions. Ask whether they have sufficient workman’s compensation insurance to cover any injuries to avoid any potential financial liability. Get in writing the preparatory steps the painter takes to get the house ready for painting — simply painting on top of compromised paint won’t work. And does the work include a warranty? If the paint starts to fade, peel or crack soon after completion, you’ll want recourse.

What should I look for when choosing a painter?

When choosing a painter, pay attention to online reviews and ratings. Reviews with pictures are especially valuable, as these showcase the painter’s work. It’s also important to check whether your state requires licenses for painters — if it’s required, your contractor should be able to present their license.

Finally, compare estimates and quotes from multiple painters near you. Take into consideration what each one guarantees with the job, including factors like higher-quality paint, extensive preparation and a good warranty.

Should I pressure wash my house before painting?

Pressure washing your siding before painting is an efficient way to clean your house in preparation for receiving new paint. However, it must be done correctly to avoid causing water damage or damaging the siding itself.

Depending on the PSI rating of your washer, you should stand far away enough from your house to avoid removing paint or etching into the siding itself. Also avoid injecting water behind the siding, which typically occurs when spraying upwards at a low angle.

When in doubt, consider hiring a pressure washer near you before your painter paints your home’s exterior. Or, contact the best painters near you to see if they offer pressure washing services as well.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a painter during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s important to use virtual tools for communication. If you’re hiring local interior and exterior painters, contact them to see if they’ll set up a video call to assess your project. During this call, they can get a feel for what needs to be done and may be able to give you a price quote.

Discuss potential plans and strategies for getting the work done safely. And ask whether they accept virtual or digital payments.

Hired KCJC Painting to paint the exterior of my home. From the start, Jake was great at communicating with me regarding my project. Due to our uncanny weather, he kept me updated regarding the earliest they could come out. Up through the start of my project, Jake stayed in contact with me. Also provided helpful/experienced feedback based on the colors and paint options. I'd hire them again and again, as the results on my home exterior are truly amazing and professional! Many compliments from my neighbors on the great job they did.

The exterior of our house was in horrible shape. The previous owner slapped new paint on before selling to us and in two years it was all peeling. Let alone the color scheme was not our favorite. After meeting with Francis from Project Painting, he was very knowledgeable and provided insight as to what they’d do to make this paint last. He was very professional and had very competitive pricing. His crew worked diligently to finish up our protect and they were great to work with. The only issues we’re dealing with weather predictions and delays which is something out of everyone’s control. If I saw a particular issue I let Francis know and he was very receptive in communicating with his crew to take measures to address them. Overall a great experience and we are loving the transformation of our house!!

My 92 year old dad who lives in a 1950s St Louis Park house needed the exterior of his house painted. We found Top Notch Painters through Thumbtack. Max Parker responded immediately to our inquiry of TNP, and came out to look at my dad's house that Sunday! Max gave us a very fair bid and we scheduled him and his crew right away. They came out when they said they would, they power washed the house, sanded down areas that needed the sanding, and did a great job painting. They even painted up my dad's two picnic table benches on the back patio for my dad. I would HIGHLY recommend choosing Top Notch Painters. They're young guys who work really hard to do a superior job to make you happy, and they go above and beyond to get the job done.

BUYER BEWARE: We contracted Kristeen/Lasting Impressions to paint the exterior of our house. Unfortunately, we never got to see the results. We were contracted to start in early June, but due to weather issues and her being overbooked, she had to move the date back a week. After the new start date and no work started, we repeatedly tried to contact her. After a few days with no contact, we finally got an email stating that she had to move the date for our project again. She couldn't provide us with an actual start date, but an estimate. This is when she offered the refund of our deposit. Her "new" timeline did not work with our schedule, so we requested our deposit back. Now, here's the kicker. Do you think we got our deposit back? Nope. Instead, we were given excuses. Then we were told we had to pay her for the paint. Mind you, this was a month after we already agreed on the deposit refund. So, we went to court. Did she show? Nope. Ignored. So now I have a judgement against her in court and she still refuses to acknowledge this and refund our deposit. That means I now have to spend more of my time to get a lien against her/Lasting Impressions. It just doesn't make sense. So, ask yourself this...do you really want to deal with this person/company? Especially, if you have an issue? I know I wouldn't. Edit: Kristeen, I'm sure your other customers are very happy. What I take exception to is that I was willing to work with your request to move our contracted date. We did move the date once. When you could not meet that second deadline, it took days to get a hold of you. When we did, you told us you couldn't start the project until some time "after the 20th". Please explain how that is me not working with you. I'd like to reiterate that you offered a refund at that time. Nothing you have stated in your response has been true. The only thing you have done is taken our deposit and not provided any goods or services. As you stated, "...I believe court will be the best route". That is the customer service attitude that you showed me. You can make all the excuses you want, but if you had actually dealt with us as customers and not blown us off, we might not have gotten to this situation.
