We were replacing outside light fixtures on the garage and before taking the old fixture down, the light was working and we had opened the garage door. After putting up the new light fixture, we could not get that particular light to work and the garage door power was out. Nothing in the breaker box had been tripped. Bill provided great customer service - we talked on the phone first so he could get more info. He instructed me to try a few things first that I could manage on my own - and it easily fixed the problem! It was very much appreciated that he didn't take advantage of the situation and come out and charge me for something that I could do myself (I had to reset a GFI in the bathroom - but I never would have thought to check those - especially in the bathroom since the issue was in the garage!) Bill followed up with me very quickly after my request went out and was a big help.

I originally had them finish my garage to insult it, sheetrock, install a storage above and install the heater. They did an outstanding job and I have since asked them to install new carpet in my basement and am working with their cleaning company to get my house professionally cleaned to sell. I highly would recommend Hiltner for anything home repairs, renovations etc. Top notch contractor!

My husband interviewed several roofing companies and decided to choose G & C Construction LLC based on their knowledge, experience, prompt response and observation of precious workmanship. We were extremely happy with the entire process from start to finish. Gordy had a wonderful crew that were prompt, respectful and kept the work area clean and tidy. They did an amazing job and I would without a doubt refer G & C Construction LLC to family and Friends. In fact, we have done so already. We plan on using G & C construction LLC as our "go to" for any projects needed in the future!! Thanks Gordy and Crew!!!!

I plow commercial accounts and on one snowy night before heading to my first client I decided to do my driveway real quick. Well, being "quick" i drove up the driveway to fast applied my brakes and hit ice. I took out the garage door part of the wall, and at least 12 cynder blocks from the foundation. I was devastated and thought it was $5000 to $10000 of damage. I got my first estimate at $1600, then Adams came and quoted less than half, I hired him wondering if it was "to good to be true". All I can say is he is a god sent, unbelievable job, fast, and no BS, he explained it all, got the materials, set the foundation the 1st day, came back the second day and jacked up the wall and fit everything in. Totally impressed! I don't bother ever calling anyone else. And I don't impress very easy.

My experience with Dustan was exceptional. My father passed away in January. My mother decided to sell her 5,000 sq ft house. He did all the renovations. They took care of painting, carpeting, quartz and granite countertops, stucco repair, replaced the garage door, all new hardware, new stain on all the hardwood floors, enameled all the cabinets, basetrim and doors. They also repainted her pool room. Floors and walls. They even took care of the landscaping. After my mother decided she was comfortable working with him, she took his advice and he she let him choose her realtor. Between the realtor, Dustan's efforts and the interior designer, an offer was put in on the house the first day it was on the market. Sold to the first couple who looked at it! My mother is in the process of buying a new house. The plan as of now is installing a floating deck and a metal fence. We cannot wait to see what he can create this time!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
