Sharon F. says, "At times, life is difficult to navigate, and such has been the case for my family in which we have been dealing with multiple adversities. The simplest of life’s tasks become major challenges to accomplish. Having too many things on one’s plate can be stressful. Such is the case when preparing for our departure. Carol and Vincent provided flexibility for a short-notice request. We were able to schedule a meet and greet and finalize arrangements the day prior to our departure. Trusting someone new takes courage, and selecting someone to look over your home and pets can be overwhelming. Both were professional and asked all the right questions while taking notes. There were a couple of miscommunications; however, Carol works well in resolving problems. She is an effective communicator, and seems willing to work with you. We were able to resolve the invoicing and fees successfully. Carol does charge mileage fees if you are outside her radius. She was upfront with me during the meet and greet; however, I can’t verify if that is clear on their advertised pricing. There was a hiccup that was not within Carol’s control. One of our cats was possibly locked in a bedroom and Carol reported to me that she had not seen him. This particular cat is not known to hide, so it was not his usual behavior. Carol worked with me and informed me she had located him. She never was able to catch a photo of him. When our family returned, he was fine, but he soiled my daughter’s bed. Carol was good about working with me to try to find the cat, and notified me immediately when she found him. She sent me photos of damage she found in which a piece of the siding from the exterior of the home by the back door had broken off. When we returned home, I looked to see what had possibly caused the siding to rip off. I discovered that my two dogs had been left outside the entire night from around 6:45 pm until around 6:56 the following morning. Looking at the weather that day, it was snowing and temperatures dropped between 10-15 degrees. It’s heartbreaking watching the videos of my dogs trying to get in and hearing them whine. They are not accumulated to cold temperatures, they are accustomed to pushing mom and dad off their bed and staying warm. When I asked if the dogs had been left outside for an extended period of time (February = Cold in MN), the initial response was no. I mentioned that the damage to the siding of the house might be from the dogs trying to get into the house as it seems they were both left outside the entire night. Carol did take responsibility and offered to repair the siding through her insurance. I am not sure what happened the evening my dogs were left outside. Nearly 12 hours of quiet…how can one miss the presence, or in this case, not present, 200lb English Mastiff and her buddy? Apologies to my neighbors for that evening. Overall, Carol and Vincent provide a professional, friendly service. She was patient because if I was to comment on myself as a customer, I did forget to leave the WiFi password but was able to text it to her. Communication is open and Carol seems willing to accommodate your needs while you’re away. For me, my recommendation would be complete transparency. Notifying me up front of the mishap allows me to provide a respectful response and have time to prepare if things go bad at home."See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Although hiring a lawn care company is more expensive than doing it yourself, it can be well worth the money. For starters, it saves you time and equipment maintenance, which may be justifiable financially. It also creates a more professional appearance. Plus, a pro can spot problems before they occur. This can save you money on expensive reseeding, aeration and other types of lawn repair down the road.

A house sitter watches your house while you are away for work or vacation, or if you have to be away for an extended period. House sitters can also provide pet-sitting services, staying in your home and caring for your pet while you are away. The house sitter can say overnight in your home while you’re gone, or stop by once a day to ensure everything is in order if your pet doesn’t need overnight supervision. Reptiles and most cats are just fine with daily visits and feeding.

House sitting provides major advantages to the homeowner. A regular presence in your house deters break-ins and theft. Home safety issues such as water leaks get noticed and dealt with right away, so you don’t come home to big problems. A house sitter can bring in your mail daily, care for your houseplants, and provide home safety and peace of mind.

Regular lawn maintenance can do wonders for your home’s curb appeal. Professional lawn care prices will vary based on the regional cost to do business and regional cost of labor, the size of your lawn, and any additional services you may desire such as edging or mulching. The national average for lawn mowing costs is $30-$50. Pros may charge an hourly rate, a flat rate or by the square foot (an acre contains 43,560 square feet). Square footage rates factor in the professional’s time, the use of their equipment, and the gas to operate the mower. Distance may also affect cost: If you live outside the company’s standard service range, you may pay an additional travel fee. Here are some examples of average prices for mowing and lawn maintenance:

  • Up to 8,000-square-foot property: $30 per week/$120 per month.
    • Bimonthly: $40 per service/$80 per month.
    • One time only: $45 per service.
      • Prices include mowing all turf grass areas; trimming grass away from fences, structures, trees, and lawn edges; and clearing or blowing all grass trimmings from driveways, sidewalks, curbs, etc.
  • Hourly rate: $25 per hour (including travel, equipment costs and labor).
  • Lot size:
    • Smaller lots in subdivisions: $35.
    • Half-acre lot: $50.
    • One-acre lot: $100.

House sitting can help keep your home safe and well cared for so you can be worry-free while you’re away for work or play. There are several steps you can take to make sure you hire a trustworthy house sitter and do your part to be a responsible host. One of the best ways to ensure a safe home is to hire a professional house sitter. Here are some key points to look for when hiring a house sitter:

  • Reviews and referrals: When searching for a house sitter, always read reviews. Previous experiences will indicate how the house sitter will care for your home while you’re away.
  • Contract: Sign a clearly written contract outlining services to be provided (e.g., mail in each day by 5 p.m.), the daily rate you are paying, and how long the services will be provided. You can also include any agreed-upon house rules in the written contract.
  • Your part: Leave important phone numbers (vet, emergency contact, etc.) and information on where to find emergency items like the circuit breaker and the fire extinguisher, and have a credit card on file with the veterinarian in case of emergencies if the house sitter is watching your pets.

You may benefit from hiring a professional move-out cleaning service, depending on your budget, time frame and whether you will be getting a deposit back. Hiring a cleaning service takes the stress out of your move. But if you’ve had your house regularly deep-cleaned, or if your landlord will charge you for cleaning anyway, you can save costs by DIY-ing it.

Generally, getting your house cleaned professionally can take several hours. The time it takes for house cleaners to complete their job depends on the size of your home, the number of bedrooms and bathrooms you have, the type of service you require and the condition of your house. It also might depend on how many employees are cleaning and the supplies they are using. If you get recurring cleaning services, the first visit might take a bit longer than the subsequent visits.

When choosing the best house cleaner for you, ask for an estimate about how long their services will take.

The national average cost for house cleaning ranges between $25 and $50 per hour, per cleaner. However, the cost of house cleaning services near you might be different.

House cleaning prices vary based on how many square feet your home is, how dirty your house gets and how often the cleaning service comes. And, prices can be lower in areas with a lower cost of living, higher in big cities or affluent regions.

Some companies charge a set amount — such as 5 cents — per square foot, with a minimum amount, such as $100. You may save money by increasing the frequency of your house cleaning visits. Often a company will charge you less per cleaning when you schedule more cleanings per month. The cost advantage rewards your loyalty, and also reflects the fact that more frequent cleanings make it easier to maintain a high level of cleanliness in your home. A housecleaning service may charge more for the first visit or for one-time services than for recurring cleanings.

When searching for the best house cleaning service near you, consider the depth of your cleaning needs, your budget and the size and condition of your home. Read reviews from verified customers of any cleaning service that you’re looking to hire. Also, check out the reviewers’ photos and do background checks on reviewers to ensure they’re not employed by established cleaning firms or maid agencies.

When viewing house cleaners on Thumbtack, you might see a Top Pro badge. This indicates that the service is one of the most popular and highly-rated professionals using the platform.

There are several things you can do in preparation for a house cleaning to improve the efficiency and quality of the job. If you’re unfamiliar with a cleaning service, hiding and locking away any obvious valuables lying around can offer great peace of mind.

Depending on the preference of the cleaner, you may need to lock up your pets before the cleaners arrive. Washing dishes and decluttering the house allows a house cleaner to do their job more effectively. And leaving special notes for the cleaners about certain areas in your home that need attention is also helpful.

Ask house cleaners near you about their tips to help you prepare for their services.

The frequency you should have your house cleaned depends on several factors, and the best professional house cleaner can give you a rough estimate of costs so you can budget how often you need someone to clean your home.

Daily house cleaning may be necessary if you have a home with a large number of bedrooms with young children and kids, although other homeowners may benefit from weekly house cleaning. A weekly cleaner can clean the bathroom, kitchen, do laundry, vacuum and mop. An occasional deep house cleaning is most beneficial for people who have recently renovated a home or are looking to do a spring clean.
