Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a landscaper or lawn care professional during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation call with a lawn care professional or landscaper during the COVID-19 pandemic, take advantage of digital technologies to avoid face-to-face exposure. When searching for lawn mowing, landscaping and lawn care companies online, ask if they’ll do a video call to assess the job and give you an estimate. You can also go over strategies for completing the job and conducting virtual payments to stay safe.

How can I find out if a landscaper or lawn care professional is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To consult national guidelines on essential COVID-19 service providers and see whether a lawn care professional qualifies, visit a page on CISA’s website called Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This website contains 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors that you can search through. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure so you should also check your city or state’s government website.

Does a landscaper or lawn care professional need to enter my home?

Because landscaping and lawn maintenance take place outdoors, it is unlikely that these professionals will need to enter your home.

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, practice social distancing at all times -- even with professionals doing work outside. You can minimize exposure during a consultation by using a video chat service. And when you pay, you can use a digital payment service like PayPal. Discuss strategies with any lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming and lawn care companies you may be considering.

Can I use digital payments to pay for outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing, tree trimming and other similar services?

Many outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing and tree trimming companies will likely accept some form of digital payment instead of cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely causing more businesses to adopt digital platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash and Google Pay.

Search professionals’ online profiles to see if they list digital payment services, and ask them about their payment policies during a consultation call.

Do landscapers or lawn care professionals offer remote or virtual services?

Landscapers and lawn care professionals generally do not offer remote or virtual services. But if you come across a profile that states the landscaper is offering remote services, it’s best to contact them to see what type of remote work is offered.

Typically, lawn care and landscaping professionals can perform many of their duties without coming into physical contact with clients. Message local lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming, and lawn care companies near you to schedule a video call and inquire about remote services.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.

I had a tree trimmed in my backyard that was growing near electrical wires. Butch came quickly to bid on the job and he and his crew completed the work a few days later. Tony and his team at Simply Trees trimmed an oak for me today, removing a substantial amount of deadwood and reshaping the tree. I couldn't be more pleased with the quality of the work. Tony came by within a couple of days of my Thumbtack post to look at the job and provided a fair price on the spot and in writing later the same day. A few days later, the job was done. Tony brought a crew of several guys, who worked efficiently and effectively together. The large tree is on the property line, so they were working for both me and my neighbor and had to navigate a fence, garage, and power line. This necessitated climbing up into the tree and using a pulley system to lower the removed branches. All the while trimming was going on, other team members were on the ground keeping up with the clean up. When the job was done, both the tree and the yard looked great. I'd happily hire Simply Trees again and recommend them to friends.

I had six trees that needed trimming--one that was almost 1/3 just dead, overshaded branches hanging over our parked cars. Josh was very professional and informative when he came out to give the initial quote, describing exactly what he was going to do and why. He's got a good eye for both the health and aesthetics of trees. All my trees look great now! While I don't think I'll need a tree trimmer again for many years to come, I'd absolutely hire Josh again.

We had a great experience with American Tree Service. We had 3 very large trees that needed to be trimmed of deadwood. Jim responded promptly to my requests and came out the next day to provide a quote and offer his professional suggestions. He was very reasonably priced and fit us quickly in his schedule. He and his crew finished the job in a day and cleaned everything up. The trees look great and we are very pleased with the service we received. Very professional at a great price. I would definitely recommend them for your tree service.

Tony and his crew arrived on time, did a wonderful tree trimming job on 2 beloved trees. They were extremely careful in my gardens and cleaned up every bit of debris. When a branch went over the fence into a neighbor's yard, Tony even scaled the fence & retrieved to branch! Above & beyond! Their price was very reasonable for such a labor intensive job, too! Thanks, guys!

I had three extremely large dead trees (Butch identified them as Locust, Cherry and Walnut) that needed to be cut down, as well as two walnut trees that needed serious trimming. All trees were entangled in power and cable lines. Both my own and the apartment next door. We had a couple of misfires due to weather, but the third time was a charm and Butch and his team worked non-stop to get the trees down and cleared away. He also exhibited a lot of knowledge about how to tend to the branches to preserve the trees that WERE alive. He handled the line drop with Ameren and power was restored before they'd even finished clearing the yard. He was fair, efficient and friendly! I recommend him to anyone and everyone. Butch will shoot you straight and do a great job.

Mike Baumann and his crew did an awesome job taking down a very large Spruce tree close to electrical lines, and trimming branches from two large Sycamores and that were hanging over our roof, and dead branches from an old Elm tree. The guys were cleaning up as the other guys were cutting so there was no mess. They ground the stump and when they left, you could hardly tell they had done all that work. Great job, great price. Great crew. Would definitely use them again. Thanks!!

Cut down 2 fairly good size trees, trimmed back to others for a very reasonable price. I got 4 bids off Thumbtack and Butch was only one to come out to actually look at the job and give me an estimate and approx. time he could do the job. Then he contacted me closer to the time and said he would come out on Monday or Wednesday. He then called on Tuesday and told me what time on Wednesday he would be there. Came on time, was finished quickly, cleaned up the yard. His stump grinding man will come out in a week or two. What I paid Butch, he will cover this man. Also got bid on too huge bushes and others in front of the house. Since he did a great job on the trees, he will be back in the fall to do the bushes, he stated it would best and least damage to do in the fall. He seems knowledgeable about trees and plants. I will keep him in my contacts.
