Jose was extremely responsive and accommodating to my request for a roof repair as soon as possible. Because the house was for sale the timeline was important and he came on a Sunday to make sure the repair was completed immediately. Knowledgeable and very competitive pricing will definitely encourage me to use his services in the future.

Sergio performed a large electrical job in my kitchen including installing can lights, wiring for under cabinet lighting, a microwave and a vent hood. He also put up new sheet rock, installed a new window and fixed several holes in my ceiling. He did a great job and I would definitely hire him again. He is responsive and knowledgeable. He showed up on time and returned all my calls promptly.

John was on time, super friendly, and extremely helpful! He helped my husband and I determine what needed to be done on some items that were flagged in our home-inspection report. He fixed the necessary problems (Cracked rafter beam & separating ridge beam) and was very reasonably priced. We will use him again for future home repairs.

Jenniffer is awesome to work with, I’m very happy with the floating bamboo that I had installed last week from At Home Flooring. The installers were prompt & definitely the best I’ve ever used, I’m looking forward to doing business with Jenniffer again in the near future when I’m ready to change the bedroom flooring. Truly a great experience!

Dan is a true professional, who went above and beyond to get everything right. He worked with me to find out what I needed, gave accurate estimates, and worked on time and consistently to get the project done. He has repaired water and mold damage to my home, designed, built, and painted a closet unit in an unused space in my home, and modified my driveway to prevent future water damage to my home. I then hired him to power wash, scrape, and paint the exterior of my home. He also repaired old and damaged fascia during this project. Dan gave me excellent advice about paint colors...he has an eye for aesthetics. Everything turned out beautifully...my house has never looked this good. He is also true to his estimates, and will work with a customer's budget to get the best outcome. I am going to hire him to replace my roof next. I am confident he will do a great job.

I was very impressed with the service I recieved. He came to my home in time and installed my door professionally. The door was not salvageable so he went to Lowes and purchased a new door and frame for me and then installed it. He did not charge me extra for going to get the door, I paid for the door and he still charged me the same quote he had previously quoted. I will us him in my future home projects. Thumbtacks is my new favorite go to in order to find people to assist me with my future home repair needs.

Mr. Terry and Ray worked diligently to patch a large area of drywall and fix several doors in our home. He had to make several significant adjustments to one door to get it to work. Very professional; would hire again.

We hired Raleigh Property Services to repair/replace a tree damaged dock on our property. The dock was almost completely destroyed from a fallen tree.. Mike did a fantastic job on this tough project. He found the best price on materials and passed the savings on to us. The kept us updated on progress throughout the project with pictures and phone calls. Mike and his crew did a very clean and very professional piece of carpentry work in a rather difficult environment. I am very happy with the results and will hire Mike again in the future. Thanks again Mike

Michael is a nice guy and I would work with him again. He was very responsive and communicated well with app, texts, calls. He was easy to schedule, even with the great distance between our locations. Window replacement look good and he did a good job with cleaning the shattered glass. The only thing that I found a little frustrating was the shift in prices and lack of clarity in the invoice. I believe he gave me an honest price though.

Mr. Mitchell was great. I originally asked for just lawn mowing and trim. I asked if he could replace my mailbox in addition I was quoted a fair price and both jobs were completed the next day. My yard looks great and the mailbox is now new! I will definitely call Mr. Mitchell again when I have another project. Great handyman services.

Adam provided exactly the services we required at a reasonable price. He came out initially to assess the work, explained the issue and gave us an all-inclusive quote for the work, which he kept to. He ordered the parts and contacted us when they came in to arrange a date/time to install. He showed up on time and completed the work, replacing 12 window sash balance assemblies. He left the work areas clean. We highly recommend Adam for window repair work.

We wanted an enclosed deck built to replace the existing one. From start to finish Manuel demonstrated a willingness and commitment to make sure we were satisfied with the quality of the job. As part of his business practice he gave an honest and very fair cost estimate and made adjustments to accommodate our budget. At the completion of the project I referred Manuel to a friend who is interested in having a similar project completed at his home. We will also have Manuel come back in less than two months to complete another project which will include rebuilding the brick steps leading to the front door.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
