Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does dog training typically cost?

The average cost of dog training ranges from $60 to $155 per hour. But, your dog’s training might cost more or less depending on a number of different factors. For example, you might pay less if you schedule group classes instead of private instruction. The type of training (aggressive behavior, basic obedience, off-leash training, etc.) could have different prices as well.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a dog trainer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Utilize as many digital means as necessary when setting up appointments or consultations with dog trainers near you during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the best way to begin is by conducting a search for dog trainers online. Compare services side by side, and ask each dog trainer you contact if it’s possible to schedule a consultation or appointment completely virtually. During this time, you should also discuss strategies for completing training and payments through digital means.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a dog trainer when social distancing?

Current CDC guidelines state, “Do not let pets interact with people or animals outside the household.” It also explains that more studies are needed to understand if and how animals could be affected by the virus that causes COVID-19 and how this might affect human health.

If you’re uncomfortable with hiring a dog trainer right now, you can reach out to dog trainers in your area to see if they will let you book an appointment in the future when social distancing guidelines are lifted. Or, ask if they offer virtual or remote services.

If you do decide to hire a pro to train your dog in person, limit any physical contact with the trainer. Stay 6 feet apart, sanitize items and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Is dog training worth the money?

Dog training can be a highly rewarding investment for most dog owners. With dog training, you can establish a better, healthier relationship with your dog, who will learn to understand your commands and wishes. Your frustration levels may decrease, and you might be able to resume activities you’ve put off, such as having people over or taking your dog to public places (though, this is hard to guarantee because each dog is unique).

Just remember that no amount of dog training will pay off if you don’t practice and follow the directions the dog trainer gives you. Consistency is the most important factor.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Dog trainers can perform a range of activities, ranging from training law enforcement dogs to working with therapy dogs or search-and-rescue dogs. However, most people hire dog trainers for obedience training. This is largely a process of training the human — much of how a dog interprets our behaviors, commands, tone and body language is counterintuitive at first. The trainer will typically come to your home to observe your relationship with your dog, teach you how to train a command and give you guidance for reinforcing it.

Is it ever too late to start training a dog?

It’s never too late to train your dog — “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is a myth. Whether you adopt an older dog from the shelter or simply want to have a better relationship with your elderly dog, hiring a dog trainer can be a good investment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for dog training?

Many professional dog trainers accept digital payments instead of cash or check. One effect of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it is encouraging companies and services to onboard digital platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo and Square Cash as a means of curbing virus transmission risk.

When you contact dog trainers near you, ask if they’ll accept digital payments. This information is also typically available on their online profiles.

How can I find out if a dog trainer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines on essential services are constantly being updated by local and federal government agencies. To see which services qualify as essential COVID-19 service providers, start with your city or state’s government website.

A reliable list of federal guidelines is available on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.  .

Does a dog trainer need to enter my home?

Depending on the type of dog training you need, a dog trainer may need to enter your home. Many behaviors that need to be corrected are associated with the dog being in the house. However, some types of training can take place virtually or even outside while observing safe social distancing practices.

Start by asking dog trainers in your area if they’ll perform a video consultation instead of an in-person one, and ask if they need to enter your home.

Do dog trainers offer remote or virtual services?

Although dog training is traditionally performed in person, the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some professional dog trainers to move to remote training and virtual services. You can contact dog trainers near you to ask about the possibility of remote or virtual services. Also, ask whether all aspects of the process can be digital, including payment.

His prescription for fixing my dog was Zen sticks and a bark collar... A real dog trainer doesn't resort to these things as the first stop. Additionally, he didn't listen to me. He was fixated on one dog when the other dog has the socialization issue. I do not recommend this individual to train your dog.

I needed some last minute important training for my Dog Maverick. He is overall a great dog, but there were some key things missing in his behavior. Alpha-moves dog training was not only responsive, punctual, and honest, but I saw amazing results in the first hour of training. It works and is definitely worth your time!!!

Robin's method of training taught me how to bond with our dog and help relieve her fears by recognizing and desensitizing triggers. She demonstrates how to reward the dog with treats on walks fraught with cyclists, joggers, other dogs, and noisy vehicles, giving me a system for heading off lunging and growling behavior. I saw a tremendous improvement in our dog in five sessions and now have a practical routine for continuing the training work. I highly recommend Robin and her warm, insightful approach to dog training!

After this experience I feel a dog is best trained by including the owner in the lessons. In past experiences I took my dogs to classes where I was taught how to train my dog and as specific problems occured I was shown how I should deal with them. My dog still has the problems I hired someone to correct.

We called Joel to work with our new rescue dog and our current dog who had some obedience training. Joel had responded to our inquiry within an hour and was over to do the evaluation the next day. We loved that Joel came to our home to complete the sessions as well as provided us with resources to help with training. His pricing was very reasonable compared to other dog trainers in the area.

Nick was awesome helping us get our growing standard poodle pup to learn some manners. Our pooch was like a different dog when we picked him up! Nick trained him from rowdy nuisance to behaving like the refined well-bred dog he was meant to be. We highly recommend Nick for all your dog training challenges!

John is not only a trainer, but a valuable resource- makes himself available to do what it takes. We acquired our 3 yo GS from a kennel so he needed to be household/ young family trained- jumping up, command/response, dog aggression. John communicated our dog’s progress throughout his training and provided the training our dog needed. John also provides the opportunity for follow up and refresh to reinforce the initial training. This is key for my household as all our humans need to be in the same page, using the same vocabulary, as our GS was trained. Very pleased!

3 days working with Kevin & my 5 year old pup is like a brand new dog! Kevin helped us with leash training and behavior. I also learned so much from him in just a few short days! He even gave us some great pointers on training our new puppy as well. His training is truly worth every penny. Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?

Carol Lynn has come for our first training session and was immediately helpful. We will be integrating a new puppy into a house with two existing dogs, one young and can be jealous. Carol Lynn immediately offered great advice to on what behaviors to tackle and how the introduction should go. She was very easy to talk with and open up to about my dog's not-so-well trained tendencies. The first session was great and I think the training and puppy integration will be highly successful due to her knowledge.

Carol Lynne is lovely, experienced and my Beaux really seems to enjoy his lessons. I chose Carol Lynn because of her certifications and the ability to teach my dog basic training and get him ready for therapy dog work. I recommend her highly.

I must give credit where credit is due. My dog has improved dramatically on the leash during a walk. What was once something we didn’t enjoy is now something we can take pride in. Joel introduced us to a variety of tools to help with our dogs training. And he did it at a great value, and was upfront about finances and worked with us to pay him. Despite Joel offering free sessions after our 6, I am still planning on looking at other trainers for other aspects of training. Joel would spend 30-40 minutes with us, and about 10-15 of those were with our dog alone. He would take him for a walk around the sidewalks in our complex and would come back, have him sit and lay down a couple times, then spend some time talking with us about the dog. One big thing that upset me was Joel’s determination that my dog has “neurosis”. This was upsetting because when we had our free consultation, I asked him if he thought that my dog had neurosis because I had seen reviews on this app that he had said that about other dogs. I was told he is a “typical shepherd”. 3 sessions later, I was told we needed to take him to the vet because he has neurosis. I had recently taken him to the vet and they hadn’t said anything about this, and had taken bloodwork and everything. I was told to take him to a different vet. Joel respected our hesitance and didn’t push for it after being told we were not going to do that. But I was frustrated because 2 of his sessions he spent talking about how he needs medication for this issue, rather than training the dog in depth. Joel uses a variety of tools for his training. However he did heavily suggest we buy anxiety relief treats from him. We did, and the next session, he suggested the same thing, in the same exact way, seemingly forgetting about our previous purchase. I felt that it was something he said to all of his clients. However, he did get us on the right track with our gear for walking. He does not use any aggressive techniques such as shock collars or hitting the dog. At the end of the day, I feel that I requested to have my dog trained to be the dog we know he can be - obedient and responsive. But I feel I currently have the same dog that is a better walker. So, if your dog needs training on how to be a good walker, I would hire Joel. If there is anything other than that you need, I would consider spending a little more for a different trainer. Joel takes the dog for a walk alone, so I am unsure of what techniques he uses. But I feel there is still work that needs to be done that I will be looking for different trainers for.

Lena is the best. Thanks to her experience and expertise my dog and I can understand each other better. I can now take my dog on nice, calm walks without him pulling with force. My dogs response to training has been amazing. Although he is a puppy he is coming along nicely and is much more composed. I would definitely recommend Lena, she has a great personality, very professional and knows what she is doing. Rufus will definitely miss her when we are finished with our training sessions.

My consultation was awesome. She was thorough and explained the difference of traditional training versus what they offer. Her dogs were onsite to demonstrate what i would be getting. Finally she was on time.

I'm a bit behind time with this rating because I hired Joel in November. At any rate, I would like to say Joel was very professional and dedicated to his work with training dogs.
