Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

Can you hire movers to move one item?

Yes, you can hire movers to move one item. Single-item movers are usually more than happy to give you a quote, which will likely be based on a few factors.

One of the primary things to take into consideration is the number of movers it takes to move one item. For instance, if you want to move one item of furniture, it may take several movers — particularly if it is a challenging move involving multiple floors.

My husband and I hired Bellhops Moving to help us move 3 heavy pieces of furniture. Bellhops recommended using 3 movers which worked out perfectly. The guys arrived ~10 before our scheduled move time which was really nice. They didn't waste any time, were very polite, and very helpful. They had a positive attitude the whole time and completed the move successfully. We recommend using Bellhops Moving for your move.

I hired Performance Moving for a move in July 2018. Keith was very professional throughout the entire experience. Prior to moving he came to my apartment to do an inventory assessment to judge how big of a truck he needed to bring and give an estimate for how long the job would take. The day of the move he arrived on time and prepared. The moving process was simple and swift. Not to mention the moving rate was very fair. I would definitely hire them again for future moves.

I was very pleased with hiring Pack It Up Moving with Terry. Terry called post move to ensure all was done and that I was satisfied. The men that came moved quickly and were professional. They didn't stop until the job was done. I moved from Charlotte to Mt. Holly and it took 4 hours total to move my 2BR Apt. The price was what he promised. I recommend Pack It Up Moving.

I would not use this moving company under any circumstances. I typically avoid writing negative reviews given they typically come across as just whining. In the case of this company though, I think others need to be warned of how they do business. The movers arrived 45 minutes after they were supposed to arrive. At our old house, the movers damaged the hardwood flooring in more than one area including scratching and cracking the wood. The movers put holes in the ceiling especially in the stairwell area and put marks on the walls. The movers dented and scratched the paint on our front door very badly. At the new house, the movers took about a 45 minute break to "assess" how they were going to get items into the basement. The movers scratched the newly re-finished hardwoods on the stairwell as well as the banisters. This was particularly annoying since I had messaged the main office for the movers to be careful. The movers damaged about every large piece of furniture they moved. The movers cracked a 58 inch Samsung television in three different places. The movers did not set-up any of the beds. The movers attempted to move a couch into a bonus room, and then upon deciding it couldn't fit just left the couch in the hallway. The movers improperly installed our washer and dryer that later needs to be corrected. The movers frequently moved furniture into the wrong room including several pieces in our basement that were supposed to go upstairs. The move in total took in excess of 8 hours to move us less than a mile away. A previous movie company a month before took 5 hours, which included a half hour of drive time. On top of taking an extended time to complete the move, the movers continued to make comments of how difficult the move was even though it was pretty standards as houses go. The issues continued when I attempted to resolve the issues with the main office. I notified the moving company with 24 hours of the issues I had with the move. I provided photos of the damage three different times. I received assurances that the matter would be resolved, but I continued to get the run around or no response at all. There were several other issues that occurred during the move and after the move as well; too many to count. However, I think the above highlights why this moving company should not be used. Again, I would not recommend this moving company to anyone.
