Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a tiler need to enter my home?

If the tiling job is located in your house, the tiler will need access to your home. The exception to this would be if the job was taking place in an outdoor area like a backyard.

If a tiler does need to enter your home, take strong precautions. Sanitize all surfaces, avoid being in the same room and conduct payment using digital platforms. Discuss a safety strategy with tilers in your area beforehand.

Can I use digital payments to pay for tile installation, replacement or repairs?

Digital payment platforms are popular in a wide range of service industries, and many tile installment, replacement and repair professionals now accept them. Common platforms include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more.

Start with an online search for tile companies near you. Ask them if they accept digital payments and which types you can use. Then, put a strategy together to follow social distancing guidelines.

Do tilers offer remote or virtual services?

Because tiling is a manual, in-person job, it is not typically considered a remote project. But if you come across a profile that states the tile company is offering remote services, ask them what those services include.

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

How long does it take to install backsplash?

The time it takes to install backsplash depends on the size of the area and the type of materials you’re using. But generally, it’ll take a few days to finish the project. Porcelain or ceramic tile may take less time than that, while very small glass tiles or complicated designs are likely to add time.

Does tile flooring increase home value?

Having a tile floor may increase your home’s value, but it might depend on the type of tile you install and the trends in the real estate market.

Chat with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out what types of home repairs and remodeling projects you should tackle before you put your home on the market. It might make sense to add new tiles when renovating your kitchen or bathroom, for example.

Which is better: porcelain or ceramic tile?

Porcelain tiles are more durable and have a longer lifespan than ceramic tile. If you're installing flooring in an area with high traffic or lots of heavy furniture, porcelain tiles will look better for longer. They’re also very easy to clean and maintain. Porcelain is also very water-resistant and can hold up in places like bathrooms and rooms with jacuzzis, hot tubs, or swimming pools.

But if the cost is your top priority, ceramic tiles are often more affordable. Ceramic tile prices start as low as $0.45 or $0.50 per square foot, and porcelain tile starts at $3 per square foot.

We had a wonderful experience working with the team. Our tile project turned out exactly as we wanted and it was completed in a very timely manner. The quality was better than we could have imagined for the price. Thank you for making our kitchen exactly what we wanted!!

Dan was responsive and showed up on time everyday but the quality of work fell well below my expectations. I had to clean the haze off of the tile myself, the pattern is misaligned in several places, there are tiles missing where the cuts would have been smaller, grout is missing in places that required bending down to see, the caulk work is iffy and the edges are not straight. In addition to all that the brand new granite sink we had installed less than a week before the project began was not covered and required two hours of work with commercial strength haze remover, mineral spirits and granite sealer to restore the color. I’m going to have pay another professional to repair or replace the work when I have time to supervise.

I’m really pleased with the tile/grout cleaning and sealing JCM did for us today. The men were very friendly and worked both quickly are carefully. I was impressed with the care they took to protect floors and walls, and also how they used a fabric piece that helped keep the cool inside and the bugs outside while they ran water in from the spigots. Give JCM a call and your floors will appreciate it!

Dan and Blake were both awesome! I lucked out by choosing them to take care of my fireplace remodel. I recently purchased this house, and the fireplace was an eyesore. The mini mosaic tiles that I purchased were a challenge (crystal, opaque, etc.). Even the grout was a challenge. What Dan and Blake did with the project, and the materials I provided them with was fantastic! I included some before and after photos.

Aby came out to rebuild a shower. A previous contractor had started the job, but had messed up some of the work and never completed it. Within three days, Aby demoed the rest of the shower, poured a new custom concrete shower pan, and put in new tile. Any time extra work was needed (beyond the initial agreed upon price) he would always ask me about it and explain the pros and cons in a clear manner. After my nightmare experience with the pervious contractor, working with Aby was a real pleasure. Highly highly recommend if you need a new shower installed.

We chose Stephen Coble for the job because he could do the work soon and had numerous 5 star reviews. He arrived at the job on time and completed the work on schedule. He worked hard, communicated clearly, and was very polite and pleasant. He tiled a bathroom floor and part of a wall in our older home. We were very satisfied with the result. The cost was a bit more than the original estimate, but that was OK because the work took extra time due to some complications that could not be anticipated. Overall we were very satisfied with the work, but we wish that cleanup had been more meticulous. There was much construction dust left in the bathroom, and Stephen left a sticky glue like residue on the bathroom mirror and on a door handle. We removed this with a scraper and some Windex. We will certainly contact Stephen when it's time for our next project.
