"We are so pleased to have selected Ben Poston as our wedding officiant! Ben has been so patient and helpful to us, from the first time we contacted him, right up through the wedding day. Due to being in a fiancé visa process, we were not able to set a wedding date until the last moment. With only a few weeks' notice, Ben was able to accommodate our rushed schedule, which we so much appreciated. From the start, Ben provided us with all the details we needed to select the perfect ceremony script for our wedding and make it our 'own'. He also walked us through the process, so that we knew exactly what to expect. We were also so impressed with how Ben delivered the ceremony. He speaks eloquently, has a very nice and soothing voice, and gives the perfect emphasis to each word spoken. He also added touches that made the ceremony personal to us. Ben is very professional, prompt, and responsive to questions and communications. He clearly explains and documents his services, which is so helpful for wedding planning. We highly recommend his services to anyone who is looking for a superb wedding officiant! Thank you, Ben, for helping to make our big day so special!"

"Samantha did a beautiful job helping us put together a New Years Eve wedding with only 6 days to plan. She is super friendly and helpful and being new to the area myself she used her knowledge of other local vendors to help us get a photographer on short notice as well. On top of all of that she also saved the day at the last minute when record amounts of rainfall continued even into the afternoon of our wedding day by setting up an indoor space for our ceremony since the wedding porch would not work with all the water on the ground that day.Thank you so much for everything that helped make our day wonderful Samantha."

"Alex did a fantastic job at my wedding. We had a destination wedding 10 hours away from home and we had to communicate through email solely. He was responsive, kind and willing to help. The ceremony was beautiful and he was open and willing to accomodate. Highly recommended!"

"When we began looking for an Officiant on line we thought, how are we going to do this. How are we going to know when we find the right one? We looked at a lot of sights, then we found Rev. Bonnie. We began to read her sermons on line and the more we read, the more we knew we had found our Wedding Officiant. So we gave her a call.Rev. Bonnie took it from there. She helped provide us with a perfect location, obtained our marriage license and walked us through the details. We finally met face to face via Skype and spent time getting to know each other better. Rev. Bonnie was very helpful in helping us arrange the ceremony so that we could insert all the special music we had selected for the day as well as our own special vows. I am a retired professional wedding photographer and Bev and I have listened to a lot of ceremonies in our life time, but none as beautiful and heartfelt as the ceremony Rev. Bonnie chose for us. She took the time to listen to our lifetime story and put that information back into our ceremony. We were truly blessed when Rev. Bonnie came into our lives. She will always have a special place in our hearts. Rev. Bonnie is amazing!"

"Rev Ron was amazing! For us he was pretty last minute when our first plans fell through, but he made it not seem like it. He made sure to ask questions we didn't even think about and made the wedding custom to how we wanted it. My husband and I did a handfasting and Rev Ron knew exactly what it was and even went through the colors meaning which we did not even think about. Could not ask for a better Reverend"

"My fiance and I did not want to get married by the magistrate so I decided to seek out the help of Cheryl to marry us in a local park. She was available on short notice and very helpful in making suggestions for vows and offering her assistance if we wanted something more complex. We stuck to traditional simple vows and everything went smoothly and we were very happy with her services. We plan to have a wedding in a couple years in Asheville with our families present and we are hoping she can renew us then as well!"

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to officiate a wedding?

The national average cost to hire a wedding officiant is $150-$200. Wedding officiant rates are affected by the date of the ceremony, the time of day, and how far the officiant has to travel. Some officiants may charge extra for additional ceremonies like unity candles or sand ceremonies, as well as the cost of the supplies. Many wedding officiants have higher rates for larger weddings and lower rates for smaller, more intimate ceremonies. Personalizing the ceremony means a lot to some couples. Wedding officiants may have flat rates for standard ceremony templates, perhaps $100-$125, and charge more for a more customized experience, such as $150-$200. This allows the couple to collaborate with the wedding officiant as they are building a unique ceremony script. At the pre-wedding meeting, the officiant will ask whether the couple plans to write their own vows and how much input they have about the rest of the wording and flow of the ceremony. Additional planning meetings and extra communication can add up to a higher overall cost. If your venue has parking or other fees, you may need to pay on behalf of the officiant. Often wedding officiants can rent sound systems and wireless mics if you have an outdoor wedding location or venue that is not wired. These extras will also increase the overall cost.

What does it mean to officiate a wedding?

To officiate a wedding is to oversee the official union of two people in marriage. A wedding officiant is vested with the power to legitimize your union in the eyes of the court. An officiant also sets the tone for your ceremony, leading the couple through their vows and shaping the experience with the words they choose and the pace they set. An officiant may be based in a religious faith, may be an interfaith officiant, may be a secular officiant, or may be a friend or family member who has received ordination online.

You can have a traditional wedding officiated, or you can also have an officiant oversee a commitment ceremony, a vow renewal or an elopement. Once the wedding is complete, the officiant will ask you to sign the wedding certificate, and will then submit the document to the court on your behalf. This makes your marriage legal. Wedding officiants work with you no matter how simple or elaborate you would like your ceremony to be. The more involved wedding officiants are in the planning and customization of the ceremony, the more they will typically charge.

Who performs a wedding ceremony?

Anyone who is authorized by the court or a credible online source has the power to perform a wedding ceremony. Traditionally, wedding officiants were ordained members of a religious organization or civil officiants authorized by the court to legally marry two people. With the increasing customization and personalization of weddings, many couples are asking a friend or family member to become ordained and act as their wedding officiant. Wedding officiants can represent a wide range of backgrounds including Christian, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, nondenominational, interfaith or nonreligious. There is no legally required structure for a wedding ceremony, so couples can customize the language of the ceremony and their vows in any way they desire (though members of some religions may have specific requirements). To legally validate the marriage, the couple and the wedding officiant must sign a marriage certificate after the ceremony verifying the date and names of those involved. The wedding officiant should then submit the certificate to the court, which will in turn mail an official marriage certificate to the newly married couple.
