Daniel was awesome. Really personable, down-to-earth, runs his business by his conscience, not out to get as much money as possible for as little work as possible, like a lot of companies. Prices are more than fair and he stands by his estimate, even as issues come up, he is super-flexible and realistic. His work was wonderful, he installed a whole-house water filtration and softener system for us. He had to lay almost 100 feet of pipe to get it to our awkwardly placed shut-off valve, under the house. He was able to place the large system in a utility closet in the garage which was a much better solution than we'd thought of. He even used some spare parts he had, and some we had, to fit in into the right position, saving us money and making sure it set up balanced and solid. It's been several weeks and we've loved the system and his work has held up perfectly. We'd highly recommend this service!

I had Isaac convert our garage into an office due to a new addition to our family. Isaac tackled the insulation, drywall, flooring, framing, installation of windows, painting, and a host of other tedious duties. I set the bar high because I would be spending the majority of my time out there for work and he delivered! Isaac conducted himself in a very professional manor, showed up on time, and ran through his game plan with me so we were always on the same page. Quality of work was outstanding. You can tell Isaac takes pride in his craftsmanship and the results will prove that. Not having much construction experience myself, Isaac took the time to break down the process, explain what he was doing, and really incorporated my ideas into reality. As a result, the finished product looks much like I originally envisioned it. When the next future project arises, ISP Construction will be at the top of my list.

Jeremy was the best HANDYMAN ever. There is nothing he cant do, do it well, quickly. I had two (2) 8x10 sheets of things to do for me, from moving electrical wires, installing undercounter kitchen lights, installing cabinet doors' and drawers' hardware that had none previously, holding up heavy mattress so I could put bed skirt on, installing storage cabinets, shelves, in my garage...and more and more.. He always goes one step further to make sure the client is happy. We moved my "office/craft" room around..his idea..and then fixed the mangle of wires left behind by the cable/phone/internet worker. The room now feels spacious and extremely more useable. When I need something done, you can bet Mr. Jeremy Ashley will be my first call. Barbara Smith, Greensboro, NC

Lea and her team are the best. They painted the entire inside of my house, all of my cabinets - inside and out, and the garage. Their attention to detail and commitment to quality was what I valued most. I did not want a sloppy painting job, and they did not disappoint. I am beyond satisfied! Even when my husband found a few things to fix after the final walk-through, Lea was friendly and said it would be no problem to correct them. They even cleaned the house when they were done and left it in better shape than it was before! I will definitely be using them for projects in the future.

Chris met with me in a timely fashion, worked through my problems with wiring, and assisted on a related issue as well. In the course of his work he noted a problem that had occured with my garage door and set up a time to do follow up. His next scheduled day was a snow day, and knowing I would be out of town, he came over from High Point to be sure tha the work would be completed and my garage closed in during inclement weather. I found him remarkably good to work with ----and would have him back for any future problems! Very highly rated!t

I would, and will, definitely use Randy again. He was responsive with a quote to my add for need of garbage disposal replacement and installation of a new utility room sink, showed up on time, got the work done and even carried out to my garage an old toilet which had been sitting unhooked in the utility room for several years when I had to get an elevated toilet for my 90+ year old mother. Thank you Randy!

I have done multiple jobs with Jim. First one is to have Jim install the garage door. The original framework was ok, but Jim has re-enforced it and make sure it's strong for long-term. I called him again on another job to install the recessed lights. It was done in short period of notice since I need it urgently for my birthday. Again, I was satisfied. When I purchased a new home, Jim also help to provide a FREE estimate of how much it costs to fix some foundation problems, and he also did a quick estimate of repair cost of other items. His recommendation was also honest. To my surprised, he recommended not to fix the issue because the cost to fix doesn't worth the value, while assured me that the issue won't impact safety. Jim is honest, quick, professional and very reliable. His pricing might not be the lowest as I have quoted several people on these projects, but learning from my experience, I rather pay 10-20% more, but that making sure I have a eye-pleasing completion every night.

Kenneth Ridge has done work for us several times over the years. He added a two car garage to our house and built it to our specifications. Everything was done in a timely manor and he was very professional. He also redone both of our bathrooms. One bath had to have the shower built from scratch and Kenneth did a very nice job of it. The large bath had to have a window replaced and he came up with the idea of a shelf where the window was because it was going into the garage that had been built. Over all Kenneth Ridge is a very good carpenter, plumber and a jack of all trades. He does very good work and we have not a complaint with any thing that was done. he does very outstanding work. He can build anything.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
