Paul was a great service contractor. He was thorough and detailed in his explanations of our problems. He was willing to help us find solutions that worked within our budget at the time. We have since seen others and are coming back to Paul because he is to be the most trusted HVAC contractor I have met.

I thumbtacked 1st Priority for issues with my AC. No cool air was coming out of the vents! My experience was great. In 5 mins Lewis (my contractor) knew what was wrong and how to fix it. The service was professional and efficient. Well worth the cost.

I highly recommend Bob from Renovation Pro. He did an excellent job and gave a fair price. You can see the before and after photos. This tile was extremely heavy and required many individual cuts. I wanted a contractor that was local and experienced, that's Bob!!

Our HVAC stopped cooling a few days ago, which normally would be ok in October but not with 90F outside! After going through my HVAC DIYer checklist and watching dozens of YouTube videos I realized that the job was beyond my pay grade. While I am always up for a challenge to learn how to do things myself and save $$, when it comes to major items like HVAC, electric or gas repairs I always opt for a certified professional. Joey came in with a reasonable quote and performed the initial assessment, working around my schedule. His assessment and suggestions were focused on what our needs where rather than trying to sell us the next best system, so we really appreciated his worth ethic and integrity. He also provided a complementary assessment for my mom’s system, who has a condo a few minutes away, so that was a nice perk. After walking us through possible options we settled on full coil replacement (it was leaking) and upping the refrigerant (which was low due to the leak). He ordered the parts and completed install within 2 days, again working around our schedule and taking the time to do it right and not leave a huge mess. He also offered us maintenance services (he has 3 very reasonably priced tiers), but again without trying to pressure us into it or making it look like a “used car salesman” pitch. For someone who is still in his twenties and runs his own company, I was hugely impressed with how professional and organized Joey is: from having a solid easy to understand website and professional brand appearance to embracing technology for diagnosing system issues and generating quotes/invoices/payments using an iPad. Overall well done and would highly recommend his services friends and family.

Overall, a very good experience. They showed up when they said they would, got right to work, were very friendly, and had the job done faster than I expected. Justin was responsive via email and reassuring once he learned that I'd had a negative experience with a contractor before.

Received various bids and selected Action Plumbing due to price and their availability to do the water heater replacement asap They also had knowledge of what was required to get my installation up to current codes and discussed what was needed and their bid included everything. The big box stores all needed days just to provide a bid. Action provided their bid within minutes, then arrived on site, on time, to confirm a replacement was really required vs. just a simple fix. All work was completed within a few hours. They hauled the old water heater away and the garage was spotless when they left. No need to wait for a big box store contractor when Action did it the same day I called and with a competitive price too... perfect. Hope all my future contractor hires go as smooth as this one did. Thanks Thumtack for hooking me up with Action Plumbing! You saved me money and the hassles of dealing with 3rd party contractors and helps us avoid many days of a leaking water heater.

Aurora was wonderful to work with; JT is knowledgeable, timely, a reasonable price, and incredibly polite and professional. He came to service our HVAC, as well as inspect a leak in the attic. On top of that, he changed out the air filters and offered advice on a roofing issue. I'd highly recommend him to anyone looking for an honest and quick mechanic.

Paramount Air Solutions is the best HVAC company I’ve used to date. A day before closing on a home I’m selling the AC went out. I contacted him Saturday night and they were out first thing on a Sunday morning. He quickly diagnosed the problem and had the home cooling in no time. Most companies make you wait days with no service. Impeccable quality and reasonably priced. I’d use them again!

Rick went above and beyond the initial job and was able to do some electrical and drywall work that I definitely needed, I would've had to call at least one other contractor to work on the electric so Rick definitely saved me some time/money!

My wife stayed home and met with Travis - he arrived exactly when we had planned and was a pleasure for her to deal with. She was made to feel comfortable with the work being done and everything she wanted explained was explained well and patiently. We plan to work with Travis again on our future, larger, HVAC projects.

This company responded to my hvac leaking through my ceiling on a Sunday morning. From the time I went online searching for services to having someone at my door was about an hour. It took about 5 minutes and I was told what the problem was and my options to fix it. I literally mean 5 minutes. Highly recommend for anyone one looking for a quick reliable service.

Jason came out to a home that my clients had listed with very short notice. He inspected their unit, gave his recommendations with more than fair pricing, serviced the unit, and then called the soon-to-be new owner and explained to her and her buyer's agent exactly what he did. His professionalism, quick response, willingness to go above and beyond, and great pricing are definitely what sets his company apart from the others. Lets be honest, having to call an HVAC company isn't anyone's favorite thing to do, but knowing that Elite will make sure you are taken care of makes it a whole lot easier when that time comes!

I’ve always been skeptical about anyone working on my home. I was recommended to them by a friend of the family and it was the best decision ever made. They respond promptly, answer all questions needed and quality work. I had my whole HVAC system replaced and they were punctual and came the time they said they would. My electric bill went down almost $100 after the system has been replaced. I would highly recommend this company.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.
