The moment I posted that I needed help with my puppy, Dawn answered me and was able to come to my home THAT DAY! She was so good with our dogs and not only taught them many tricks and manners we had been trying for months, but also taught me and my family so much about her breed and how to continue our training with our dog. She knew her facts and has a lot of knowledge on dogs. Very impressed and will 100% recommend Dawn to everyone who needs dog training.

What is there not to say?! Shawn knows how to train but more importantly, she knows how to train people. A dog is trainable . . . give the dog the command and the dog will follow. Reinforcement and the training of people is where the key to success of dog training is or not. Got it Shawn. Your words did not fall short on this girls ears. If you are looking for someone who will get you to start believing that your pet can truly behave then you need not look farther. Shawn Kwiatkowski will get both pet and owner walking in line together... The end result a behavin' relationship.

I run a dog training business ( and at any one time can have up to 3 dozen dogs in my facility. Ellie has shown great care with larger dogs and smaller, calm and anxiety ridden, long and short haired. She took time to familiarize herself with each and do a wonderful job caring for them. I'd hire Ellie again in a heart beat. For my dogs or my clients' needs. Thanks, Ellie!

We got a puppy and were having a lot of potty training issues. Myke was able to put our minds at ease, as I was quickly coming to my wits end. He was very patient with our dog and showed us a lot of good training exercises to work with the puppy’s behavior and potty training problems. Even Myke agreed that our dog was a little stubborn on potty training but didn’t give up until we learned a strategy that worked for our pup. We are happy to report that our puppy is doing a lot better. Some in house accidents, due to her not fully undersnading how to get our attention to go outside, but she at least sits by the back door and tries to wait for us. Life has been difficult with a one year old toddler and a puppy but Myke helped us a lot and we just have to continue with his techniques and I’m sure this pup will be a cherished pet for many years!

United K9 has been great so far! It's not like obedience training and really does take a more deep-rooted approach to change behavior rather than simple commands and repetition. We have a lab/boxer mix who's very high energy and tends to be anxious and dominant. We have worked with Ashley and she's gone over the basic rules of the house as well as nutrition and other key pieces of information - our dog has responded well to the rules so far and it's allowed her to have more confidence in us as her leaders. Ashley has also been very prompt with setting up last minute visits to go over some of our dog's more difficult behaviors and we appreciate her patience while we continue to work through things! We would definitely recommend United K9, especially if you have a stubborn pup and think you'll need multiple sessions.

I had a red-zone young dog and had gone through numerous trainers who could not make him stop attacking everyone...he was very aggressive. Stacy was a God-send. She very quickly won his trust and immediately helped him and me. She worked with us with care and expertise and I shall always be beholding to her for saving my dog. It is nine years later and he is one of the greatest dogs I have ever had...thanks to Stacy's magic.

I work for Weber County Animal Services - and while Suzannah was in Utah, she would come in and help me with dogs that I was having trouble with. There were a couple of dogs that I couldn't get out of the kennel because they were too aggressive, and she would work with them through the kennel and get them to come out to us. There were a few that had behavioral issues and she would come in and walk me through how to work with them - whether it was dog-on-dog issues that she would show me how to handle and help fix, or ones that would just randomly turn on me and become aggressive. She would also bring in her wonderful dogs with her and help me dog test some of our dogs that I had a harder time reading and figuring out if they would be okay with other dogs. She also has shown me things that I can take home and use on my own personal pets to help them be better and happier. Thanks to her, so many dogs lives were saved at the shelter - because we were able to help them get to where they needed to be, rather than euthanized because we couldn't help them. She doesn't just help the dogs, but she also helps us as people. She never judges us, or makes us feel stupid for not knowing something. She is AMAZING, to say the least, at what she does. We definitely miss her here in Utah.

Paula has been caring for and training my dog for almost the last 3 years. I have a rescue dog that had so many issues including pulling on the leash, reactivity to other dogs, and he would not jump into the car or on a couch when invited to name a few. Paula worked with Joey and taught me how to continue the training at home. I now have a very well behaved dog and Joey has an Aunt for life. I can take him out to social events and I often get compliments on his good behavior. I don't know what we would have done without her!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

      • What type of training methods do you use?
      • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
      • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
