Lee and his team did an excellent job. Engineered hardwood floors required a repair under the fridge, and overall refinishing. Work was done well, on schedule and on budget. Would (and have) recommend!

I was so impressed with their work of painting the entire house and laying kitchen tile and hardwood floors throughout the home. The most important thing to them was if I was happy. Jonathon would always show me their progress and ask if I was happy with everything. They went above and beyond to make me happy and make sure that everything was done right. Two weeks after they were done they came back to install transition strips for me which were delayed on a special order. Jonathon also fixed something that I had noticed while he was on this return visit. I'm so pleased with everything they've done and their continuing concern to make sure everything is right. My friends have given many compliments on how beautiful my home is and all the hard work they did.

We hired Rent Ready Experts to completely gut our main bathroom that contained a wooden window sill in the shower. Luke, Marty, and Carlos were professional, polite, easy to work with, and great with keeping us updated on each day's progress and upcoming plans. They replaced the window in the shower, added a new vent fan and light kit requiring a double switch plate, moved existing lighting, removed wall tile from the entire bathroom, inserted a new tub, vanity, all new fixtures, tiled floors and entire shower surround from tub to ceiling, and installed frameless shower doors. Their timeline and price were wonderful. We were more than happy with our new bathroom and will definitely hire them again for future work!

Jim and his team recently installed hardwood in 3 of our carpeted bedrooms. Jim helped our budget by suggesting a cost friendly wood...which turned out to be just as beautiful as the expensive product. Jim is honest, hard working, and very knowledgeable of his craft. We are extremely happy with the results and would hire Jim again for any future flooring needs.

Words cannot describe the workmanship of Stevenson's Hardwood Floors. Is Dennis Stevenson part man/part workhorse or is he just super human? That's the question. We had our hardwood floors sanded and stained by another contractor who was doing our kitchen remodel. He was NOT familiar with hardwoods and our contractor destroyed our floors. He put grooves in the floor and he slopped the stain on with mops. What I walked into was a disaster zone and I was in a complete panic. I was hysterically calling around to hardwood floor companies and it was a Friday morning right before 4th of July weekend no less and everybody was leaving for vacation and closing up shop early. Dennis Stevenson listened to my needs and told me that he could fix it. He asked how early he could show up the next morning (on a Saturday people!!!) and I basically told him that he could have free reign on the house. This man showed up at dawn (6:30am) and took one look at my floors and shook his head in disgust. This was going to be a job of all jobs to tackle. Dennis stayed a grueling 18 hours and I swear I never saw the guy take a single break. We brought in a couple of cheeseburgers and dropped them off for him and as soon as we shut the door to the house, I heard the sanders fire up again. I do not know any company that would make an emergency house call..on a weekend..and then proceed to work EIGHTEEN SOLID HOURS until the job was complete. He fixed all of the floors and made everything more gorgeous than expected. Dennis wasn't going to quit until he achieved perfection even though it was well after midnight and he knew that he had to get up at 6am for Church the next morning. The work ethic of this man is unbeatable. His schedule was completely booked for the next month but every night for 3 nights that week, once he got off work, he would come straight over and put the next coat of poly on until the entire job was complete. Go with Stevenson's Hardwood Floors. You will not be disappointed!

We hired Mitcho Contractors to help us with refinishing a wood floor and replacing a linoleum floor. He provided us with people who were very experienced. However, before we had the work done my sister and I realized that the floors we had in the 70 year old house were okay after we had them properly cleaned and did not need to have the wooden floors refinished or the other floor replaced. We would recommend Mitchco for others in need of assistance doing work they need done and we will feel good about calling him again ourselves if we need work done. Very professional. I liked his knowledge of how to get the job done and done well.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
