Jose did an excellent job cleaning out our gutters. Had our roof replaced a little over a year ago and apparently the roofers left way too many nails which were clogging our highest gutters. Jose was able to remove every nail as well as all other debris...now gutters flow freely!! Would def hire again!

I'm not sure how to describe this experience fully, but my husband was a professional woodworker to the extent that he was hired at the college level to teach fine woodworking and furniture design. Yet, he had a very rounded grass roots education in most aspects of house renovations. Two years ago, he had an accident that left him a quadriplegic. Because of this, we are downsizing quite a bit and needed someone to help us with some electrical and general handyman tasks so we can get our house up for sale... those things my husband did not get a chance to get to. I am so happy we found Sergio! He was able to complete half the things on our list in a short day for a very reasonable cost. The remainder we are waiting for parts, but I have full faith he will complete them easily and quickly. What floored me was that he found things that our builder should have done but never did completely. That's what I truly appreciate about Sergio. He has seen what the builders do to cut corners and knows how things should really be done. And the solutions he comes up with are extremely practical and affordable. You will not be sorry sorry if you hire him for a job... and have a realistic grasp on how much your problem will cost to fix.

ABJ roofing did an excellent job replacing our new roof. I called around the area and got different quotes and they by far came in with the fairest price. They use the best products accompanied by the best roofers. It was an enjoyable experience and I would 100% without a doubt refer them to anyone I know. Great company + great people! Thanks guys

After several attempts by roofers to fix my leaky roof I contacted Travis. He quickly determined the problem. He replaced roof boots, flashing and shingles around vent pipes. He took pictures and showed me the old damage boots before throwing them away. I actually had one roofer tell me I needed an entire new roof. Travis saved me a lot of money and I haven't had any more problems. Thank you!

I am very happy with my experience with this roofer (Apal Roofing – Art Barnes). Our initial communications were done completely online. We made an appointment online through Thumbtack on a Saturday for him to come out to my house and give me a quote that next day (Sunday at 10am). What first impressed me is that not only did he show up as promised on Sunday, but he showed up 15 minutes early, actually got up on my roof, walked around to assess it, took pictures and then took the time to show me the pictures and explain what I was seeing and why it was or was not significant. Of the roofers that gave me a quote, none of them, except Art, did that. He is also the only roofer who gave me a quote for repairs vs replacement, an idea of how long the roof would last if I made repairs only and a 10 year workmanship, no leak guarantee if I replaced the roof. In addition to that, the quote he gave me to replace the roof and gutters was significantly lower than any of the others I received. On the agreed upon day, the roofers showed up on time, got to work quickly and was completely finished installing the roof and cleaning up 4 hours later. The gutter installers came a couple hours later and were equally as efficient as the roofers. After the job was completely done, Art walked around my house and checked to make sure the job was done right and there were no leftover nails on the ground. Now here is where the job could have gone South. Art and I somehow failed to have a meeting of the minds with respect to the installation of gutter covers. After we talked it out and came to an agreement, he made it right for me. If all of the other positive things I have mentioned did not tell me why his company has such good reviews and an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, his response to our failed meeting of the minds did just that. I am very pleased with this company and would definitely recommend them to anyone…as a matter of fact, I already have.

I ended up deciding to replace the whole roof, and went with this vendor because of their friendliness, high level of expertise, and professionalism. I loved how clean and accurate their neatly emailed estimate was, and how it detailed the scope of the work better than all other roofers who responded to the full roof job. It's just nice to see all the special situations mentioned in writing, it gave me a much better feeling about the vendor. I also liked that they were one of the only guys willing to come out and do a small repair job for me. What happens if a tree falls on my house? I know who to call for my roofing needs.

After getting several vague inquiries and 'quotes' from others on Thumbtack which were immediately moved into the metaphorical rubbish bin, my wife and I narrowed our choices down to two local companies: PBC, LLC, and a competitor not listed on Thumbtack. Stan and Bill set up a time promptly to assess our roof, and gasp, actually took the time to get a ladder, climb to the a part where the pitch wasn't steep, take photos of visible damage, etc. (trust me when I say that some roofing companies will try to just point out the damage from the ground level without lifting a finger). During their visit, they had a folder prepared with line item quotes, aerial views, general information about the stuff needed, etc. which struck me as being, well, quite organized. The overall quote from PBC was just ever slightly better than the competitor (the competitor had a similarly organized proposal), so we chose PBC, LLC. Communication with Stan and Bill (mainly Stan) was clear and concise from Day 1. When he said, "Someone's dropping off the roofing materials on [x] day by [y] time," that happened. When he said, "The roofers are starting work on [x] day by [y] time", it happened. Start to finish, our roofing project of approximately 20 squares took 3.5 working days: first day was tear-off, 2nd and 3rd day were install/repair, and half a day more of debris removal. Speaking of debris removal, I'd have to go outside right now and specifically look for any errant shingles, nails, or other materials. The crew/Stan/Bill probably got 99.999999 percent of everything, which is greatly appreciated since our dogs enjoy running about in the yard. We also had them do 2 handyman'ish jobs - removing a large piece of tempered glass from a previous owner, and fixing our chimney sweep-out door. Both were done in a timely and clean manner. Really happy with the way our roof looks, and thanks again for the fantastic overall service!

I cannot emphasize enough how pleased I am with Raleigh Roofers, William Coble, and his team of roofers. The price was right and the quality and attention to getting it done right was second to none. They received several requests for proposals during the job and landed them, which is no surprise to me! Job very well done. Would refer to everyone.

I relocated out of state and in the interim I put my house for sale. My realtor showed me some estimates without remodel. After reviewing the comparables in the area I decided to put some work into it and am I glad I did. Like many of us there was a budget to stay within. Pondered my options for a short while then I hired Alan to do some bathroom remodel, painting, deck, tile work, laminate flooring, and a variety of small jobs including electrical and plumbing work. When the projects were completed my husband tried to talk me into keeping the house because it looks so nice LOL He traveled quite a distance and did a great job. What I was equally impressed with was after his work was done he stuck through the entire inspection process for my closing. The house was only on the market for 4 days and I received full offer. Pretty impressive to me. Good listener, nice work, and just as important Alan had that old fashion work ethic. Took pride and showed up when he said he would on all occasions. I think he was just as concerned in my budget as I was even when he was purchasing supplies for me. I am definitely grateful to had found someone affordable and hard-working who actually cared and did a great job. I would definitely recommend Alan Melton.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

  • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
    • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
  • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
  • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
  • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
  • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
