Had a center ceiling light box installed in a first floor room. Not easy to do with an existing home because of drywall cutting. Victor made the least demolition of the ceiling and walls...very important for the repatch and paint work. Also, Victor was extremely prompt in responding to my inquiring, providing a guesstimate over email and arriving promptly for the project. The only developmental area for Victor in our project was in "cleanup". The larger drywall remnants and debris were removed from the hardwood floors, however, a broom - which was used for cleanup - did not (could not) pickup the dust and finer points of drywall cutting. A vacuum was not used during cleanup. I was left with a chalky room floor to vacuum and wipe down. I believe Victor may have simply forgotten to attend to this. Overall, though, I would recommend for hire and consider for repeat hire of electrical labor.

We have had two projects done; fence repair and garbage disposal installation. Both projects were expertly completed in a very timely manner, at a great price. Expert service that will not oversell you on material or labor costs. I will not only continue to choose Santiago for any future personal projects/repairs, but will also recommend him to all friends and family!

Our project was to check our outdoor lighting to see if it needed to be repaired or replaced. Jonathan responded promptly and came out and checked our lighting, determined that it could be repaired and gave us an estimate on labor and parts. He did a great job and now all of our pole lights are working and look great!

Mike is a self employed contractor with 40 years experience. My garbage disposer stopped working and I went online to thumbtack for help. I entered my project details and Mike responded with a chat 10 minutes later quoting a price which was quite reasonable. I was very pleasantly surprised that he agreed to come over on labor day to fix my disposer. Mike came right on time. He is very professional, knowledgeable, and provided valuable advice. He is also very personable and I enjoyed our interactions. He fixed the disposer like it's new again and gave me tips on what not to do. I am in HR and a great read of character. Mike is dependable and will quote you a fair price and will get the job done. Thank you Mike!

Joshua did a great job working on my electrical system. He is trustworthy and honest and I felt comfortable having him working on the property. Joshua, took the time to listen to me describe the work to be done, and provided helpful input to make the project successful. He charged on a labor plus material basis and it was a very fair price. I highly recommend Joshua for anyone needing a handyman.

I had some built ins installed and I picked him because of his experience and his price cant be beat. I had several quotes emailed to me and his was the most affordable. He did a good job installing the cabinets on his own. Overall I was pleased with the outcome and it did not break the bank. Very reasonably priced labor cost and meticulous with his work.

I needed repairs done on the wooden stairs leading from my screened porch to my patio after my dog destroyed them, as well as the doorway to the porch. Upon further inspection, Mr. Orr found pervasive wood rot underneath. Needless to say, the entire thing needed to be replaced. Mr. Orr spent 3 days working morning until night to get my project completed. He repaired the chewed up doorway at no extra labor charge. I will hire Mr. Orr again for future projects, and recommend that anybody needing anything from general repairs to large projects call Mr. Orr, and give him the opportunity to serve you!

I have great painting abilities. I also have years of experience loading and unloading furniture trucks as well as freight trucks.

I am a good hardworker. I specialize mostly in hard, manual labor. I have warehouse experience, grounds-keeping experience, some carpentry and cabinetry (mostly installer/laborer), and janitorial, and I cook and bake quite well. I have been actively searching for work for three months and have been unable to find anything. I was recently released from prison on 2/5/2014, and I am desperately needing, wanting, and trying to move forward with my life. I just need someone to be willing to take a chance on me. Thank you for your time and consideration. I hope to hear from you soon.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.
