Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often should you paint your house's exterior?

Expert opinion is mixed, but the general range is five to 10 years. However, this depends on many factors. Houses in harsh climates with extreme temperatures, lots of dust or ice or intense sunlight may need more frequent paint jobs than those in temperate climates. Also, wood houses will need new paint more often due to the changes within the wood itself. You should also consider painting the outside of your house if you plan to sell it.

What is the best exterior house paint?

Acrylic paints are generally considered good options for today’s home exterior paint jobs. You can also choose an oil-based or latex (water-based) paint. Also, look into specialty paints for your doors, roof, gutters, siding and other exterior surfaces.

How many coats of paint does the exterior of a house need?

Your house’s exterior will likely need two coats of paint. With two coats, your house will look more even and solid in color and will be better protected from moisture and the elements. The painting should always occur over a primed and well-prepared surface.

What colors should I paint my house exterior?

You have many options when it comes to paint colors. For example, an off-white creates a traditional look, and it looks great with a bright door to contrast it. Yellow is a happy color that, while light blue is reminiscent of an oceanfront style. Gray houses are also on trend, providing a classy and neutral tone that remains warm and inviting.

What should I look for when choosing a painter?

When choosing a painter, pay attention to online reviews and ratings. Reviews with pictures are especially valuable, as these showcase the painter’s work. It’s also important to check whether your state requires licenses for painters — if it’s required, your contractor should be able to present their license.

Finally, compare estimates and quotes from multiple painters near you. Take into consideration what each one guarantees with the job, including factors like higher-quality paint, extensive preparation and a good warranty.

Does a painter need to enter my home?

If you’re hiring an exterior painter, the painter will likely not need to enter your home. But for interior paint jobs, the painter will need to enter your home.

When talking to potential painters, discuss a strategy to make sure you and the painter(s) stay safe while they’re completing the job in your home. Or, you might want to discuss scheduling the paint job at a later date.

Is it worth it to hire a painter to paint my house's exterior?

It is nearly always worth it to hire a painter to paint your home’s exterior. While you may feel comfortable painting a small, one-story home, anything with multiple stories, dormers or other complexities are best left to a pro.

Additionally, it’s best to let the pros handle older homes. Any time extensive prep work is needed — such as repairing chipping, bubbling, cracking or peeling paint, or fixing caulking and substrate issues — a pro can  handle it.

Contact the best painters near you to start getting free estimates and planning your project.

Can I paint my own house exterior?

While you may choose to paint a door, ground-level window trim and other parts of your house’s exterior, it’s really a job best left to the professionals. One of the main reasons is experience. An experienced painter knows how to handle the prep work, spot problems and identify sources of future trouble, all while getting the job done more efficiently. They are also experienced with spending long hours on tall ladders. If you want high-quality work, it’s best to hire a professional painter near you

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a painter during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s important to use virtual tools for communication. If you’re hiring local interior and exterior painters, contact them to see if they’ll set up a video call to assess your project. During this call, they can get a feel for what needs to be done and may be able to give you a price quote.

Discuss potential plans and strategies for getting the work done safely. And ask whether they accept virtual or digital payments.

We hired Valdes Painting to paint all of the exterior wood, the metal canopies, and an iron fence. They did an OUSTANDING job!! Their prep-work was meticulous, including covering all of the windows and exterior hardware and protecting all of the exterior lights. The paint was sprayed on and then hand-rolled, which made for a smooth finish and allowed it to dry quickly, so we didn't have to wait for hours for paint to dry. They got every nook and cranny, matched the paint exactly to what we specified, and did an AMAZING job! I would highly recommend Valdes Painting. They were quick to answer all of our questions and had excellent communication, so we could plan out our project. Thank you so much for a job well done!!!

Daniel Roofing painted the exterior of our home. Kenneth was prompt getting our job scheduled before the weather got colder. The wood siding on the house didn't take the paint as expected, but he stuck with it, giving it the attention necessary until it looked as it was supposed to. The house looks great! I would hire Daniel Roofing & Construction again.

Working with Neri and his team was amazing. Neri was quick to respond with a quote and the job was done soon after. The quality of the work is incredible, Neri and his team were able to turn this house into the home we’ve always imagined. True Finish painted the exterior of our 100 year old home with lots of attention to detail and great craftsmanship. They came when they said they would and were in communication about status or weather set backs the whole time. We have had lots of contractors work on our home for various projects and what stood out about them is integrity, even a small knick on the window they immediately informed us about and made arrangements to fix it, I know these things happen and wasn’t phased at all but it was the fact they were honest, accountable and professional through the whole project that counts for a lot! We’ve gotten so many compliments on our house and they will definitely be our go to on all painting projects!

This review will probably be too long, so let me sum it up: if you are looking for quality exterior painting in the Omaha area using old school technique (brush/roll and NO sprayer) for an affordable rate, the search is over, Todd Studer of Pro-Edge Painting is the man for the job. Period. I had 16 different people/companies out to give estimates for painting my tri-level home, and I am not exaggerating. It proved difficult to find someone who would not use a sprayer. I did not have the time to do the job myself, and I especially had no desire to paint the "elevated" areas. So I wanted to find someone who would do the job the same way I would do it, with brushes and rollers. Furthermore, I will not hire someone that I do not fully trust because I can't always be around to supervise. These two main requirements are what caused my search to be so extensive. When I first started communicating with Todd (I found him through an app called Thumbtack), he was prompt, courteous, and very professional with his responses in both text/email and on the phone. He stood out in that regard. He always showed up on time, something I value a lot because it's becoming increasingly uncommon lately with people who "work for themselves". The quote from Pro-Edge was not the lowest, but it was still less than half of the highest. Among the 15 others, Todd stood out to me as the best bang for the buck considering his methods for prep work/painting as well as the commitment to using a high quality durable product from Sherwin-Williams. Money aside, I had good vibes. I did not have to pay anything until the prep work was complete, at which point he required me to pay 1/3 of the overall estimate. He assured me that I would not pay him another dime until I was completely satisfied. Now that's what I want to hear! Todd had two super friendly helpers named Shawn and Ashley that did a significant amount of the work. There were times where Todd was out giving estimates and/or working another job site, which is not exactly what I expected or hoped for, but thankfully they were competent and trustworthy. This is probably the only thing I could nitpick about, simply because I got a "one job at a time" feel from him during his initial trip out to give an estimate; it's not like he reneged on a promise to be there every minute of the job. It was 6-8 weeks from the time Todd gave me a quote to when I accepted it, and he never pressured me. He started soon after that. Prep work began on 7/8 and the job was completed on 7/29 with some intermittent weather delays (heat and rain). They did not do any work over the weekends. I was pleased with the amount of time it took. Of course I realize it could've been done much quicker but that honestly would've made me feel like they rushed it. There were several issues that sprung up throughout the job, such as discovery of rotten wood in front fascia and siding on the north side of house. Todd did not feel comfortable making repairs as extensive as this, so he recommended that I consult with a carpenter for a long-term fix. I appreciated his no-nonsense approach to delivering bad news, and when giving guidance he took into consideration my plans to live in this home a long time. There were also some weathered areas of the house where the paint did not cover as well as he had hoped, so he ended up having to put two coats on. That was not part of the estimate, but Todd refused to charge me a penny more than what he originally quoted. He did not even consult with me on that decision. He didn't ask "Does this look alright or do you think should we put another coat on?" He knew it could be better even if I was unable to notice. I have to say I was astonished with how well he handled unfavorable scenarios. He was unflappable. I think I could've dumped a gallon of paint over his head and he would laugh it off. When the job was completed, I found a couple things that they missed. They promptly returned to correct them. Todd assured me that I don't just get a "one and done" chance to bring up any issues I discover. If I find something down the road, just give him a call. He not only does a great job, but he stands by his work. If I need any painting done in the future, interior or exterior, I will be calling Pro-Edge.
