A friend of ours told us about Gilbert so we decided to have him give us a quote. Gilbert got back to us in a very timely manner and was very responsive to get the numbers crunched. My wife and I had several quotes by this time and were shocked by the price that we were given. With this price I was a bit skeptical of how the quality of our carpet was going to turn out but I was assured that the carpet would turn out great. Gilbert was very easy going and a pleasure to work with. Gilbert layed everything out on the table and completed his work in a timely manner. When Gilbert finished he had my wife and I come see the work that he had done and all our worries turned to excitement. I would also like to thank Gilbert's partner that he worked with the day that he did our floors . Together they worked as a well oiled machine. Thanks again Gilbert! I will definitely pass your card around and have you do any other flooring job that we may have. Chris & Kristen P.

Sam was hustling the whole time he was working at my house. He installed an antenna with rotor setup in my attic wallfished to my second floor. He also fixed a ceiling fan and swapped out several switches. Great demeanor very eager to care for any project I threw his way.

Steve and his co-worker, Phil, did a terrific job. I could not be more pleased with everything about the service he provided. This includes his competitive pricing, timely performance, attention to detail and problem-solving when adjustments had to be made to accommodate an irregular basement floor and fieldstone foundation wall, and perhaps most of all working in difficult conditions and extreme heat. I cannot say enough about how pleased I was. I look forward to his continued involvement throughout the renovation of our 160-year home.

It was a pleasure working with John and his wife Leanne. John did a fabulous job taping and painting at my home in addition to installing a new toilet and bathroom sink and refinishing the hardwood floor in one of the bedrooms. He was always punctual, pleasant to deal with, and took care to clean up after he was done. I would highly recommend John and will certainly keep him in mind for any future jobs.

Bob is awesome! He does meticulous work and left my apartment as neat as could be at the end of each day. He painted my entire place and put down all new floors... it was a big project and took some time, but I was surprised that it really didn't seem that disruptive. He did all the little "extra" things that made a difference... even the cat loved him! He is honest and fair and very detailed. I can't say enough!

I hired Felipe to build closets in two bedrooms and patch/refinish the pine flooring on the second floor of my house. I got several quotes and chose FW Home Improvement because the quote was very reasonable and they were available to start right away. Felipe and his partner were very courteous and professional. Felipe responded to my emails and texts promptly. They worked extremely hard every day and got the work done right on schedule including a couple of extra little jobs I added. There were a few small details that were left undone, but overall I found their work a very good value for the price. I plan to use Felipe for some additional work that I have planned for my house.

Our church had some water damage in our kitchen which involved replacing the tile floor. To do that our pot sink, commercial range and dishwasher need to be moved. They were the only contactor that identified that the gas supply to the stove would have to be changed to meet code, that our sink/grease trap unit needed to be re-plumbed also to meet code. Sean is a great communicator always sending me an email at the end of day to recap what was done and what would be done the next day. All construction jobs have some unplanned hiccups! One day both workmen had health issues and were not able to work that day. We had built in extra time since our kitchen is heavily used, so we were OK. Their price was ver fair for us and them. I can recommend Handy and Some without ant reservation.

Frank has been extremely resourceful and helpful in problem solving. We came across many issues as we had to prepare my elderly father’s home for sale, burst pipes, tree fallen shed, major debris, and he took on every task with a “can-do” attitude. He was flexible in timing and also available in an emergency. He is trustworthy and honorable business man. He is a great handyman and can help with tasks like debris clearing to replacing flooring. He was always available and present when problems arose and I knew I could count on him to help. He work with his crew through extreme temperatures to get the water running this winter. If you have problems Frank’s your guy!

We needed a couple of our wall-to-wall carpets stretched to take out some wrinkling. Hanson Floors performed the work and did an excellent job. We are very pleased with the results. They were easy to work with, arrived on time and completed the job within the timed that they estimated. They cleaned up well after completing the job, too. DF Floors is very professional. My floors look great, brand new, actually! They were in poor shape do to water damage, etc, but DF buffed it all out; incredible! Duilas (DF), is incredibly patient and is open to ideas and the home owner's thought and opinions. If you have a question or concern, just ask! For the homeowner, I would suggest reading up on hardwood floor repairs, refinishing on your own so you are knowledgeable about what can and cannot be done. I've experienced that a trade professional appreciates when the homeowner understands the limitations of the project, etc. DF Floors. I highly recommend Duilas and DF Floors for your hardwood floor needs, you will be VERY happy!

We hired Ralph to do some tile work for us in our bathroom. A walk-in shower, tub deck, and floor. He did an absolutely beautiful job! I highly recommend calling him for your project. It's rare to find someone who is a complete professional throughout the entire process! Very happy with the work and the price was very fair. We plan to hire them again for our next project!

The job starting with laying hardwood flooring. Then turned into a whole kitchen remodel. Bill saved me $11,000 by installing a brand new kitchen with all new cabinets and granite counter tops, instead of doing a cabinet refacing (thru another vendor). He helped with the design and picking of quality materials used and stayed within my budget. Bill and his team did an excellent job and I would recommend him to my friends and family.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
