"Roberta was amazing! She was professional, but also calming when she did our ceremony. I started to have a few tears and she was right there with a tissue handy and she was discreet about it. We loved the folder she provided with pictures and documents, before our reception was even over! Her and her husband are wonderful people."

"Sandra was amazing. When my original Justice of the Peace cancelled on me last minute, Sandra not only stepped up when I called her but set my mind at ease. She walked me through what to expect, what decisions we will need to make and when she needed information by. I had to do everything from long distance as I lived in a different state and she was always available and accessible to answer any questions. Brendan and I loved that we were able to make the ceremony personal and include certain aspects that were important to us. I highly recommend Sandra to ANY couple. Her calming attitude and personality also made things much lighter the day of our wedding. "

"Tina was an absolute blessing on the day of our wedding! We spoke a few times leading up to the big day to run through the plans. She handled everything from meeting up with vendors (florist, photographer, priest) to make sure everything was in place. We rented coach buses to shuttle our guests from the hotel to the reception site - a local pier since the reception was on a yacht. While the bridal party was taking pictures, guests were to board the buses. However, only one of the 2 buses arrived. Tina immediately called the bus company and when timing became an issue, she arranged alternative transportation for the remaining guests at the last minute. Additionally, on our behalf she sought a refund for the "no show bus". At the end of the night she reached out to me to let me know she had triple confirmed all of the return bus reservations. I was able to enjoy the time with my family and friends knowing she was ON TOP OF IT! I highly recommend Tina and her day-of coordination services. Thank you, Tina! -Kristen & Anthony"

"From my first interaction with Jen, I knew it was a good choice. In all the photos on her site, she looked 100% thrilled to be taking part in the marriage of couples. There was nothing we wanted less than a stoic, lifeless person to be part of the happiest day of our life. Jen made herself available via phone, email and in person at no extra cost to help make sure the day was going to go off without a hitch. I loved meeting her in person - her effervescent personality shined! Leading up to the wedding she helped us craft the ceremony itself, providing options for us to start from, bringing suggestions based on what we had shared with her for our vision for the day. Then right up to the day before she checked in again, to make sure we were all set - I loved that she was so on top of her game! She was prompt in arriving, dressed beautifully - professionally, respectable, for the occasion. She was an absolute delight in performing our ceremony - she read with love, happiness, and had the perfect pace in her speech - not too slow, not too fast, paused at all the appropriate places. Jen is an ABSOLUTE professional, someone who loves love and sharing in that with others - I would 1000% recommend her to anyone looking for an officiant. And though we just tied the knot - if we ever are considering a vow renewal down the road, and Jen’s still working her magic - she will be the one we contact first. "

"Susan was amazing. She went above and beyond to make sure we had the ceremony we imagined. With her help we were able to relax and know everything would go smoothly. Before our meeting with her we were nervous about how everything would flow since we had no coordinator and she made sure everyone knew what to do so we could enjoy our moment. She is a kind person that truly is there to make your day perfect. Best choice we made was booking her as our JP."

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to officiate a wedding?

The national average cost to hire a wedding officiant is $150-$200. Wedding officiant rates are affected by the date of the ceremony, the time of day, and how far the officiant has to travel. Some officiants may charge extra for additional ceremonies like unity candles or sand ceremonies, as well as the cost of the supplies. Many wedding officiants have higher rates for larger weddings and lower rates for smaller, more intimate ceremonies. Personalizing the ceremony means a lot to some couples. Wedding officiants may have flat rates for standard ceremony templates, perhaps $100-$125, and charge more for a more customized experience, such as $150-$200. This allows the couple to collaborate with the wedding officiant as they are building a unique ceremony script. At the pre-wedding meeting, the officiant will ask whether the couple plans to write their own vows and how much input they have about the rest of the wording and flow of the ceremony. Additional planning meetings and extra communication can add up to a higher overall cost. If your venue has parking or other fees, you may need to pay on behalf of the officiant. Often wedding officiants can rent sound systems and wireless mics if you have an outdoor wedding location or venue that is not wired. These extras will also increase the overall cost.

What does it mean to officiate a wedding?

To officiate a wedding is to oversee the official union of two people in marriage. A wedding officiant is vested with the power to legitimize your union in the eyes of the court. An officiant also sets the tone for your ceremony, leading the couple through their vows and shaping the experience with the words they choose and the pace they set. An officiant may be based in a religious faith, may be an interfaith officiant, may be a secular officiant, or may be a friend or family member who has received ordination online.

You can have a traditional wedding officiated, or you can also have an officiant oversee a commitment ceremony, a vow renewal or an elopement. Once the wedding is complete, the officiant will ask you to sign the wedding certificate, and will then submit the document to the court on your behalf. This makes your marriage legal. Wedding officiants work with you no matter how simple or elaborate you would like your ceremony to be. The more involved wedding officiants are in the planning and customization of the ceremony, the more they will typically charge.

Who performs a wedding ceremony?

Anyone who is authorized by the court or a credible online source has the power to perform a wedding ceremony. Traditionally, wedding officiants were ordained members of a religious organization or civil officiants authorized by the court to legally marry two people. With the increasing customization and personalization of weddings, many couples are asking a friend or family member to become ordained and act as their wedding officiant. Wedding officiants can represent a wide range of backgrounds including Christian, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, nondenominational, interfaith or nonreligious. There is no legally required structure for a wedding ceremony, so couples can customize the language of the ceremony and their vows in any way they desire (though members of some religions may have specific requirements). To legally validate the marriage, the couple and the wedding officiant must sign a marriage certificate after the ceremony verifying the date and names of those involved. The wedding officiant should then submit the certificate to the court, which will in turn mail an official marriage certificate to the newly married couple.
