"***IMPORTANT NOTE, PLEASE READ: I am located in the metropolitan Detroit area. But, I am available for online (remote) lessons; with a very good online set up (tripods, cameras, etc). I am also available at my teaching space, and have two great drum sets set up side by side; one for the student, and one for the instructor. I am also willing to commute to the student, within a certain radius, with a nominal fee (for gas and commute time). Thank you for your time and interest. I have 25 years of experience as a working musician, combining: Private drum instruction, freelance studio work, and collaboration with musicians and bandmates in both a live and studio setting. I have been a member of solid Metropolitan Detroit bands, most notably including: Friends of the Family, Night Train, and The Mobius Loop. I have been blessed with many great opportunities, most notably supporting national acts, such as: The Headhunters, Melvin Seals, Mofro and Strange Folk. And, I have recorded at excellent Metropolitan Detroit studios, including: Studio N Armada, Riff Lab Studios, Woodshed Studios and The Disc. More recently, I have participated in recording projects with a group called The Nova Junction, and with talented producers Dan Lesnick and Josh Ackerman. Along with teaching drum lessons, I am also presently collaborating on original material, with a newly formed rock band, called Electric Temple. I am looking to add dedicated students to my current roster. I am very experienced with teaching students in a wide age range; as I have students that are 5 years of age, and students that are 60 plus years of age. I took private instruction, studying under two EXCELLENT drummers from the Detroit Metro area: Darryl Pierce and Donny Gruendler. Mr. Pierce (among many other accomplishments) currently tours internationally and nationally with a well known artist by the name of Bettye LaVette. This group has made frequent television appearances, including: David Letterman and Austin City Limits. Mr. Gruendler, is currently the Vice President of Musicians Institute in Los Angeles, and he has been featured in several Modern Drummer publications. I have learned a great deal through private instruction, and therefore teach from experience. I utilize and apply many of the techniques that I personally found useful; through my own personal instruction. I also have two full drum kits, set up in my teaching/rehearsal space; which has proven to be an exceptional teaching tool. References from teachers, students, producers, and bandmates can be provided on request."

"Drum Lessons with Rob Garcia. I teach at my studio in the West Midwood/Ditmas Park section of Brooklyn (near Newkirk Plaza and Ave H). I will also travel to the students. I teach my students to play the music they like. I encourage self-expression and creativity as well as learning the necessary skills to read and play music with other people. My teaching studio is equipped with two drum sets, piano (I often play piano with the student on drums) and a stereo system. I'm well versed in many popular and not so popular styles of music/drumming (rock, pop, jazz, funk, hip-hop, reggae, Latin, Brazilian, swing, dixieland, drum and bass, to name a few). Bio: Rob has been teaching drum students (from age five through adult) for over 20 years, and has been a professional performing musician for 25 years. He has taught drums as well as jazz and percussion ensemble at the New York Hot Jazz Camp, Berkeley-Carroll School, P.S. 184, P.S. 10, and The British International School of New York. He has done clinics in the U.S. and Europe and has performed in over a hundred school assemblies in the tristate area with organizations such as Arts Horizons and the Brooklyn Arts Council. "A prime mover in the current Brooklyn jazz scene" (Time Out-New York) and "one of New York's great jazz drummers and composers (Capital, New York), Rob Garcia continues to be a strong presence in the New York and international jazz scene as a sideman and bandleader. He has collaborated with such stellar artists as Joe Lovano, Dave Liebman, Wynton Marsalis, Catherine Russell, Vince Giordano, Woody Allen and Joseph Jarman and has played on over 70 albums including grammy winners. Rob's album, "Perennial" (BJUR 012) was in the "10 Best Jazz Albums of 2009" in the New York Observer. His group, the Rob Garcia 4, has performed at venues such as The Ottawa Jazz Festival, Iridium, Smalls, the Kingston Jazz Festival and the Toronto Jazz Festival. Rob has also received grants from Meet The Composer, DCA and NYSCA to support his performances. Rob has also been a major force in artist-run jazz organizations. He is the founder and executive director of Connection Works, a member of the Brooklyn Jazz Underground and a founding member of the Douglass Street Music Collective. In addition to many creative projects, Rob has played on many recordings for TV commercials, TV shows, and major motion pictures. He has a master's of music from Suny Purchase (2006)."

"PRICING: LESSONS AT MY STUDIO: $20 per half hour lesson, $80/month for 4 lessons; One-hour lessons, $35/$140 (4 lessons). ONLINE LESSONS (Skype, FaceTime, etc.): $25/lesson, $100/month for 4 half-hour lessons, $45/$160 for one-hour lessons. NOTE TO POTENTIAL FUTURE STUDENTS: I live in Colorado Springs and teach only at my studio. IF YOU LIVE OUTSIDE THE COLORADO SPRINGS AREA, I CAN ONLY TEACH YOU BY SKYPE, FACETIME OR A SIMILAR APP (see pricing details below). Also, I don’t teach children younger than 10 unless they have had at least one year of piano or another instrument—preferably two years or more. PLEASE READ THROUGH MY ENTIRE PROFILE INCLUDING MY LESSON POLICIES BEFORE SENDING ME A REQUEST. Thanks. ABOUT ME: I’m a music teacher in Colorado Springs, Colorado. I teach at my studio and also by Skype or FaceTime. I have been teaching drums and percussion most of my adult life. The many students I've taught to be proficient drummers speak for me. All of them have come away with a solid understanding of rhythm and the role of the drummer in a band, as well as a firm knowledge of the techniques and attitudes that make for excellent musicianship. My goal for each of my students is that they become a better drummer than me, and I'm pretty darn good! 🤣🤣🤣 MY TEACHING: I teach ages 10 to, well, let’s say 100. Instruments: snare drum, drum set, congas, djembe, and other hand percussion. I specialize in beginning and intermediate students, but have also had many students reach an advanced level. I teach each person as an individual—no cookie-cutter approach ever. My students play to recordings or jam with me. I try hard to balance learning and fun! WHAT I LOVE ABOUT TEACHING: What really makes me happy is seeing a student totally nail a song I've assigned, sounding like a pro, fills and all. Or getting real solid on a Latin beat, a 5/4 rhythm, or a syncopated swing beat I designed just for them. And especially, I love seeing the big smile on their face when I high-five them afterward! PRICING: LESSONS AT MY STUDIO: $20 per half hour lesson, $80/month for 4 lessons; One-hour lessons, $35/$140 (4 lessons). ONLINE LESSONS (Skype, FaceTime, etc.): $25/lesson, $100/month for 4 half-hour lessons, $45/$160 for one-hour lessons. PLEASE NOTE: If you don’t live within driving distance of Colorado Springs, Colorado (west side, near Manitou Springs), I can only do lessons with you on Skype or FaceTime. NOTE TO PARENTS: I don’t usually take students under age 10. I will only teach children under 10 if the child has studied piano or another instrument for at least one year, preferably two or more years. For all lessons at my studio with children under 15, the parent must be committed to being present and involved in all lessons at all times. SKYPE/ FACETIME STUDENTS: Serious inquiries only. Again, please read through my entire profile before sending me a request. LESSON POLICIES This letter outlines my expectations as a teacher. Your understanding of these guidelines will make lessons more enjoyable and productive. These guidelines help students maintain consistent progress; they are standard procedure with most private music instructors. WARNING: Playing Drums Can Damage Your Hearing! Always Use Ear Protection When Practicing. Fees and Payments Like most music teachers, I follow a strict tuition-based payment policy. I charge $80 per month for four half-hour lessons ($20 per lesson) in my studio. Skype or FaceTime lessons are $25/lesson, $100/month. For one-hour lessons, or two half-hour students from the same family, I charge $140 per month, $35 per hour. Payment is normally required at the first lesson of the month (or by the 7th). Each month’s payment covers lessons for that specific month only, and will not be carried over beyond that month. Once the month is paid for, your commitment is expected for that entire month. If a student quits before the end of the month, no refunds will be given. You are expected to pay the full monthly amount each month. If you expect to be gone an entire month or more, I will charge half the usual ($40 per month) to hold your place in the schedule. My rent and bills are the same whether my students come or not, so I do not give credit or makeups for avoidable* missed lessons or bad weather. For unavoidable* missed lessons, finding a makeup time that works for both the student and myself is not always possible. (Please note this exception: if it was my fault a lesson is cancelled or missed, I will either do a makeup within the same calendar month, or credit you.) I take responsibility for my own illnesses, etc., so I expect my students to take responsibility for lessons missed on their account. Time Considerations For each student, I teach four half-hour or one-hour lessons per month, from the first to the 28th of each month. In months with five lesson days (5 Mondays or whatever), as a general rule I use the “fifth days”—the 29th, 30th or 31st of any month—for makeup lessons; please mark your calendar accordingly. Because I often have several lessons back-to-back and need restroom breaks, etc., I do not guarantee a full 30 minutes per lesson. I do guarantee at least 25 minutes, and most lessons do last 30 minutes or more. Most of my students have experienced my generosity with time. When extra time is available, lessons can extend to 35 minutes or more. For those who feel they don’t get their money’s worth if a lesson lasts less than 30 minutes, my philosophy is that I provide information, not minutes. However, I am committed to helping each student grow in musicianship as consistently and completely as possible. Therefore, before each lesson ends, I take the time necessary to provide information suitable to the student’s age and skill level, assign appropriate homework, and make sure the student understands it. Illness ** Since I teach in a small room with students from many different schools, I am often subjected to every cold, flu, or other illness going around. In order to limit the spreading of illness, please be considerate and stay home when you are sick; if I’m sick, I’ll cancel. (No charge for missed lessons due to illness). Practicing I deal with each student as an individual, but for all students, progress depends on regular attendance at lessons, and on consistent practice to become proficient at what you learn in each lesson. The amount of practice may vary from day to day, but serious, scheduled practice at least 5 days a week for at least half an hour per day is necessary for best results. Students should practice as soon as possible after the lesson for maximum retention of learned skills and information. Happy Drumming! Gary *Unavoidable misses: job or school requirements, weather, illness, etc. Avoidable: movies, partying, etc. **For Skype or FaceTime students, this is only an issue if the student or teacher are too sick to do a lesson."
