Margaret did what she said she was going to do. She asked for ten days or more: she delivered the manuscript back to me in ten days. This is my first experience with fiction. From her ‘tracking corrections’ and commentaries I could see that she read every word—93,000! Yet, she treated the book as a whole: she understood the book and its intent. It set an important bound of trust between writer and editor: her commentaries were objective, yet, her suggestions were caring and doable. She spotted the things I had most difficult with and fixed it. For instance, verb tenses can throw off the reader. She suggested to keep it in the past—it works! She then explained the ‘market’ and the reason why I will probably have difficulties finding an agent. Nevertheless, she offered plausible suggestions on how I can get the book out there… Thank you Margaret! Gilberto Girardi

The project was to find a professional resume writer who could create a resume and cover letter for a retiree with 25+ years of experience to apply for an administrative part-time position. I believe the comments below speak for themselves. First reaction, "WOW”. I really wasn't too optimistic that she would be able to take what I provided her and craft it in such a way to get so much information into 1 page. Of course my expectation was an improvement over what I provided, but she really took it to another level; I was amazed! To have someone who truly understands ... respects my feelings is absolutely priceless. I guess the best way I can say this, is the professionalism, sincerity and genuine commitment to my project is something we all as consumers wish we could experience with any company we do business with! Well done!" Thank you so much for a job “Well done”!

A skilled writer, he responded quickly and provided service on the same day. Prof. Gerace helped me make my writing tighter and more succinct, and to clarify jargon that might not be obvious to my intended audience. It is not always easy to take criticism (aka constructive feedback), but he was objective and very kind in his comments. I'm thrilled with the way this project turned out, and I would work with him again in a heartbeat.

Kate is easy and fun to work with. She has an intuitive approach. She is a good listener. I interviewed 6 writers (1 in Canada, 5 in US) before talking with Kate and I decided to go with Kate for 3 reasons: 1- her high-quality is worth more than its cost. 2 - she leaves nothing on the table, she is going to write it out and in a timely manner; without delay. 3 - her interview for my bio write-up was so thoughtful. Meaning, at one point I said to Kate, "I was hoping you were going to ask me about that." I've included a picture of my bio. The best part about working with Kate on my bio is that she aspires to capture your story and her writing technique is so good that whatever your story her writing adapts. Just know, if you work with Kate she is going to nail it! #thumbtack

This was not my first effort trying to use a content writer and I had a negative opinion of all content writers after my first experience. Malory from “The Missing Ink” quickly changed my opinion about the value and opportunity a skilled writer can offer to a company. Malory is an excellent content writer and capable of writing about almost anything. She is punctual and created a beautiful 2,700 words of awesome content and she made it in a day. Based upon her first sample writing effort, I was so impressed that i have already given her new projects to tackle and plan to utilize her unique skills into the foreseeable future.

I thought JT was great to work with. He really took the time to speak with me and get my vision for where I wanted my content to go and say. If you are considering a content writer, I would highly recommend JT as he takes his time and gets it done right.

Rosemary Donahue is a writer’s dream. From the very first conversation, she was supportive and attentive. She took my rather weak pitch and helped me shape it into a much better piece, by opening me up to perceptions and nuances that I might not otherwise have considered. Another plus is that she responds quickly and thoroughly, so that I felt we were really on the same team.

Marjie provided administrative support in our non-profit organization. This ranged from the mundane stuffing and stamping envelopes, to the creative organizing of events from beginning to end, to the complicated collection and analysis and presentation of data. Other responsibilities included management of a sometimes unwieldy database, email and phone communications with our constituency, and note-taking and report-writing of internal and external meetings. Marjie has performed superbly and enthusiastically in all areas. To get to a quality work product, she asks the right questions and seeks guidance at the right times, while still balancing initiative and autonomy. Her work ethic is strong and exemplary, and you will not find another teammate with more grace, graciousness, commitment, discipline, and creativity.

I had hired Happy Resumes (Rebecca - RH) along with another resume writer, to work on 2 slightly varying aspects of my resume (as I also felt it'd be good to get slightly differing perspectives). RH Resumes totally blew the other one out of the water (check my other review to see what a disaster the other one was). Right from the first call, I felt like RH really knew what she was talking about - and more importantly listening to what I was saying rather than pitching her services and ability. She also send me a bunch of formats to choose from so she had an idea of which ones I preferred - though she gave her professional opinion on which formats to use depending on my background. She was quite prompt in sending the first draft as well; I found some of the points I mentioned to her in our first call appear in well-formed/formatted concise sentences in the first draft. I was very pleased with her very first draft as it surpassed my expectations. What I was impressed with was the crux of my accomplishments were preserved while cutting down the superfluous details that I had initially found quite hard to trim (as I was too close to it). Though we went through a couple of rounds of tweaking, she was very open to my suggestions, and was prompt in trying to slightly different formats based on my suggestions. Her willingness to truly listen, get a good understanding of my expectation right from the beginning while working with a format/template structure that I had chosen initially, and delivering a stellar first draft, makes her one of the best resume authors I've worked with. She could be easily charging a bit more for her services for the type of work she did. I'd highly recommend her any day. Thanks RH!

Sandra made sure she had a clear grasp of my needs and the purpose and audience of the writing project, which is a series of blog-style book reviews/summaries that provide college and career advice. She wrote in a style that fit seamlessly with my website and provided exactly what I had asked. She met her deadline and maintained clear, professional communication and follow-through for a fee that was much more reasonable than other quotes I had received (some of which had typos and others which were instant responses without details that never delivered on promise to provide more info) I am very happy and will be using her services on an ongoing basis.

Tony generated a very professional resume. He formatted it so that it looked great both on the printed page and on screen. Tony spent time on the phone with me gathering the salient points--education, experience, skill sets, honors and awards, publications, etc., then drafted a resume which I was able to review and edit as needed. Happily, Tony did such a great job displaying and emphasizing my credentials that I did not have to change anything! I was invited to participate in both phone screenings and in-person interviews. Tony acted as job coach to prepare me for those events through role playing exercises where he was the interviewer and I was the interviewee. During these sessions, Tony helped me become aware of my phone presence, made suggestions regarding my delivery, and recommended that I stay on topic when answering questions, yet expand to emphasize my expertise in the field, when necessary. I am extremely pleased with Tony's abilities as a resume writer and interview coach. I know that you will find this to be the case as well. Tony's methods resulted in my landing a new job. I have been working there for six months. I know that Tony's efforts and instruction helped me get my position.

The writer was extremely professional, overall the quality of the paper was amazing. Additionally, the writer worked with me to ensure that my paper satisfied me and met my needs. The writer constantly asked me my opinion on the paper before making any durastic changes. Being that I was on a very strict deadline, I was both amazed and surprised that the writer was very diligent in making sure my deadline was met.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

      • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
      • Strong writing skills.
      • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
      • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
      • Expertise in your target area.
      • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

      • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
      • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
      • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
      • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.
