I had felt very nervous just before i started to take English lessons from Raul. I had some anxiety and a negative thought about i will never learn English. After taking my first class, i changed my negative thought. I have been taking English class for 2 months and i feel the differences and improvements on my language skills. Raul is a perfect teacher. He is so professional and informed about how to teach. He makes me more courageous to learn English every day. He is also very patient, kind, friendly and understanding. He shares all his informations, sources and experiences about what you want to learn. Learning with him is a big joy. I feel not only happy but also very lucky to know him and to take class from him.

I was in NYC with my husband. While he was working, I took the opportunity to take Spanish lessons. My weakness is in conversation. I had (5) 1.5 hour lessons with Laura and it was great! She got down to business and really focused on the task at hand- she is flexible and accessible. if I could have taken more lessons, I would have! I look forward to working with her again on my next visit! I really appreciated her encouragement, more than anything! Cynthia N.

Julie is a really good teacher. She is very through with helping to get the proper pronunciation. Although I am far from fluent in spanish, I have received many compliments from spanish speakers regarding the fact that I don't speak with a heavy accent. She is also very patient and goes at the student's pace (I work full time and have 3 children so my learning spanish is really just a fun hobby).

My daughter was trying hard, but really struggling with AP French at her competitive Manhattan school. She was also resistant to the idea of outside help, at first, but Seamus' approach put her at ease. With his help, she caught up with her class and developed the skills/confidence to reach her AP score goals. Because of his results, I decided to use him to finally brush up on my own rusty Spanish, something I've known for a while would help with my career, and it wasn't nearly a hard as I'd feared. I wish someone like him had been around back when I was learning the first time. Highly recommended.

Elijah is a brilliant tutor. He has a unique combination of qualities: deep intelligence and sincere compassion. My son had never taken a physics course and yet in three months Elijah had taught him so well he was able to score a 700 on the SAT subject test. Whatever the topic (we have also used him to tutor in Spanish and history) Elijah is able to instruct and motivate. He is a terrific role model. We have very much enjoyed having him in our home. Elijah is a master teacher. You can find less expensive tutors, but none better. He is worth every penny. He has helped my son gain academic confidence in his patient, quiet way. We will always be grateful to him.

I love the Italian language and culture and realized my speaking abilities from my university studies were rustier than I thought during a recent trip to Italy this past summer. Upon my return to the States, I immediately sought private tutoring and I could not be more satisfied in finding Mariateresa. I've seen vast improvement in my comprehension and speaking since I started taking lessons with her. The first couple months were focused on fundamentals and book work but now each lesson begins with about 30 mins of conversation (in Italian of course) before diving into books. I cannot recommend Mariateresa enough regardless of your comprehension level because not only does she challenge me every week to improve my skill but the time spent with her is very enjoyable and something I look forward to every week.

Saul is a very talented and patient teacher. He takes his time getting to know what you want out of lessons, and is very flexible in his approach. When one way wasn't working, he found another. As someone who desperately wanted and needed to learn guitar, but sorely lacking in "natural ability", he was a perfect fit for me as a teacher. He brought me a long, LONG way in a short period of time. I highly recommend him!

I've been taking online basic Spanish classes with this school for a few months now. I've tried to learn Spanish a few times before, but the structure of these classes is excellent compared to most. We started with the basics in present tense, and we are gradually building it up to the future and past. I've learned more in these classes than previous ones I've taken, which is saying something!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
