I hired ADAD to install 4 replacement windows in my home. The windows were custom made so there was a bit of a wait but Mr. Dever made sure that I was kept updated. The price was reasonable compared to other quotes I received, and the windows are now installed and they look great. A+

Tom was very nice and fixed our bedroom door that my dog thought was a tasty treat. He did such a good job fixing it that the part of the door he worked on looks even better than the rest of the door. He is a very skilled carpenter and we would definitely hire him again for any other task.

Glen and his crew did an excellent job laying my natural stone floors. From the first conversation, I knew they were knowledgeable and professional. The installers worked with my family so that we could maintain our normal routines as much as possible during the installation. The flooring installation exceeded my expectations. Glen worked with my budget and provided helpful suggestions to save money. I look forward to a long relationship with JR Custom Builders as they are coming back to renovate my kitchen.

I'm originally from this area but have lived in NYC for over 30 years. I came back to Belleville to help my mother with some work around the house. I needed a handyman and decided to use this site. I was connected with James from JB Home Care Service. James was truly a professional and completed the task in record time. I was so elated with his work that I called him again for another project. I highly recommend James for any work and have already saved his number in my phone for the future.

Can't say enough good things about Vincent! Let me start off by saying that I've worked with a lot of contractors in the past and really loathe having to hire one because the majority of my experiences have not been positive. I'm glad to say that it was a completely different story with Vincent. He showed up exactly on time with all the needed materials, and got done to business right away. He built an outside stair railing for me and he was done so quickly that I could hardly believe it! His work was ace, and his work ethic is even better. Vince is now my go-to guy for construction projects around the house and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to others. He is one of the "good guys" in the business and does exactly what he says he's going to do.

We have a pre-war dining chair, hardwood of some kind, and after a rumble with a visiting dog + a child (neither ours), one arm was sadly snapped off. Google led me to Thumbtack, Thumbtack to Michael Matos. Michael was extraordinary at sticking with the dull administrative details of scheduling, file-sharing (jpegs of the damage) and emailing, and just plain old time-management. He arrived at our home on time to survey the job in 3-d, gave me a sound and confident estimate, and was ready to take the chair with him. Delivery of our repaired chair was within the time frame we were given at the start of the job, and it met my expectations for the repair. I have high expectations and am always surprised when they are met. This was an outstanding job in the woodworking studio, as well as on the phone, in the ledger, by the clock. When Michael delivered the chair, I asked my equally-exacting daughter to take a look. She could not tell the difference between the repaired arm & the other, as when she pointed to the wrong arm & said, "Is it this one?" We have a lot of nice things made of wood, and surely any of them will need their time being repaired, so I am very pleased to have made the professional acquaintance of Michael Matos.

I hired Tsimura Inc to paint a couple rooms in my townhome and they did a great job. Ron the owner was very professional in assisting me with the process and the specific needs for my projects. They were very professional in prepping the area, moving the furniture and keeping the floors covered and everything clean. They took their time to paint my rooms and they turned out great! Will defiantly hire for my next paint projects!

Basement remodeling for dog's room. Rate overall experience ?????????? Our dog (pembroke welsh corgi) loves to run around in the house, chew walls and also shed a lot. We decided to turn our basement into the dogs room. The project includes: cutting old concrete, painting the floor, plumbing, instaling lights and fan, covering walls with "dogs prove material", instaling sink, making removable boxes to cover some area, insulation to hold noise, instaling removable gates for dogs. We received many quotes from contractors. We decided to hire tony because he listened to what we want and showed us that he cares about my dogs. He is very pleasant to work with from pricing, scheduling, choosing materials, colors, ideas, etc. He is open to any suggestion on what we can do to make it better or spend less $$ on this and that. We name it, he will make it happened. We are very happy with his work. He cleaned up before he left every time he did any works(thumbs up). He also helped us patching the walls that were chewed up by our dogs (was not in the project list). We are glad we met him and hired him for the project. We will definetely hire him for future project. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Craig was very prompt in his responses as well as scheduling the appointment. He was on time and was very professional and friendly. Even our dog loved him! He completed the job quickly, even though additional hardware was needed. Overall, I would definitely call Craig again for projects!

Martin family builders has done an excellent job remodeling our home on several occasions. First we worked with Jeff to finish our basement where he built custom cabinetry! More recently Jeff updated our home a remodeled bathrooms and hardwood floors. Jeff also replaced our roof and replaced windows. We were so impressed we went ahead and updated our exterior with stone. The team is a real pleasure to work with! The attention to detail and fine workmanship and creativity resulted in amazing updates to our home! I highly recommend them!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

    Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
