We worked with Katherine Fonsella from DeCicco events and cuisine and she was WONDERFUL. We were planning a pre-wedding dinner for about 100 people in the Tarrytown area, but we live in Northern California. We did not know any venues or caterers or suppliers. Katherine helped us find a great, unusual loft venue, arranged all the decor, tables, lighting, and set up the catering from DeCiccos. The staff were excellent, the food was very good, everything went off perfectly. We are so appreciative of all that Katherine did to make our event wonderful!

Sofia was a pleasure to work with for our baby shower! Always available to talk and gave so many suggestions based on the type of decor that i was interested in.. she tried to work as much as she could to get us a decent price range too, even with our extensive guest list. She even made the centerpieces herself to save us some money and we really appreciate all that she has done for us! Thank you again Sofia and Michael!! :)

Moving into a new home we were faced with so many decisions. One of them was repainting, more importantly deciding on the colors to repaint with. We read every design blog and spent many hours looking at Pinterest as time was running out. The painters needed to know what we wanted to do and we still weren't sure. This is when we decided to find professional help to make sure we got it right. Arati came to the rescue. She listened to our ideas and worked with us to refine them. Ultimately she helped us build a color palette reflecting our tastes which we could rely on in our current and future decorating. We found her rates reasonable and working style very flexible. She scaled her services to our current needs while letting us know what other design decisions she could help us with in the future. We would recommend Arati to anyone trying to solve a decorating/design dilemma. Especially if you have not worked with decorators before as she is very beginner friendly.

Cortney is a great decorator. We were on a time crunch and she made all of our ideas work despite the timing. She has a fun & outgoing personality and it shows in her work. Our centerpieces were very nice and we are very happy to have picked her to decorate our big day.

Stephanie helped my wife and I celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary this past March in Kissimmee,Florida. We hired an interior decorator for the occasion, but she fell ill a few days before the big day and we were hard-pressed to find a replacement for her. That's when Stephanie stepped in to help, and she did an amazing job for us.She was a joy to work with, was detail-oriented,and kept us informed of how things were progressing along the way.We were very pleased with Stephanie's work, from the table decorations to the party favors to the photograhs. We're grateful for Stephanie's help and dedication. She pretty much saved our day.We highly recommend her to handle your next event because we know that you'll get the very best.We were completely satisfied with her services. Thanks again,Stephanie.

Finding an interior decorator is a lot like dating. You speak to a bunch of people and eventually decide to roll the dice and commit. You hope it works out because you are going to be working closely together for a while. I lucked out. Lisa was a perfect match for me and my project. She was very collaborative, but direct when she needed to be. Her instincts are great. She is very thorough and did a fantastic job keeping the project on budget so you don't have to worry about any of the details. She is reliable, trustworthy and hard working. She cares about you and the project. My apartment looks great. We added a lot of personal touches and did so on a modest budget. In fact, Lisa finds every way she can to save you money so she more than pays for herself. I highly recommend her for anyone looking for a highly collaborative and patient design parter!

Inger and his team were awesome! I hired him for our yearly holiday business party and it was nothing short of festive. They were attentive, creative and a pleasure to work with. It made the hassle of hosting a party so stress free. Inger took care of all of the coordinating and the decor was beautiful. Everyone loved the decorations and centerpieces. I will definitely hire him for my next event and would recommend him to anyone looking for a well rounded event coordinator.

Paula and I have worked together for several years to redesign my townhome. We have worked in stages and I never felt pressured to move ahead with work or make decisions before I was ready. She is creative and thorough. She listens well to my desires and promptly finds beautiful ways to improve the ambience of my home. Paula has great connections in the design world to find decor within budget. She is not afraid to speak her mind about design and has a great eye for quality.

First off ours wasn't a typical event. My son was married last year in Seattle and this was the NJ celebration for all those who couldn't make the trip. Second, I contacted Marcia exactly a month prior to the date. Not much time at all. And I had never worked with a planner before so I wasn't sure what to expect. Third, other than centerpieces and favors they had no clue what they wanted and Marcia helped me pull ideas together. The number of changes that took place in the last 5 days alone - people dropping out, people deciding to attend, a change of the entire floor plan which meant moving the DJ and changing table numbers - was making me crazy but she kept telling me it would be ok. On the day of while setting up our wine bottle centerpieces she realized we hadn't sent enough flowers and still managed to improvise and make everything beatiful. Because they wanted open seating I wanted to reserve 6 tables for family. She not only greeted all our guests (because we were arriving later) but also managed to pull off the reserved tables with a list of names to seat at those tables. When we arrived everything was perfect, everyone loved it. I was able to just enjoy our friends and family and have a good time celebrating without any worries. When the party was ending she and Amanda were very quickly breaking down and packing up everything that would come back to me. This review was long because I wanted to get across how much she did in just one month. I would recommend her to anyone looking for a party planner, wedding planner, decorator. You'll be happy you did.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
