Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is CPR training?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (better known as CPR) is a lifesaving manual technique that pumps oxygenated blood back into the body’s organs if someone’s heart or breathing has stopped. A variety of CPR training is available to community members, employees and healthcare providers. CPR training may last two to five hours or more, depending on the content and the target audience. During the training, students will learn how to recognize and respond to an emergency situation. There are different CPR techniques for adults and children, but with both you will learn how to determine whether the person is conscious before administering chest compression. During the training you’ll learn chest compression techniques for adults and different techniques for children between the ages of 1 and 8. Students learn how to properly administer chest compressions, when the technique is appropriate and when it is not, and how long you must perform rescue measures. Students also learn what an automatic external defibrillator (AED) is and how to use it if necessary to shock a patient before administering CPR chest compressions.

How do I become CPR and first aid certified?

You can earn CPR training and receive first aid certification in a number of ways. Choose an online course to learn the materials remotely and then find a testing location to complete the certification process with an in-person demonstration of your knowledge and skills. Encourage your workplace to host a first aid and CPR training so employees can learn what to do in case of a workplace emergency and how to respond with lifesaving techniques. You may also be able to take a CPR or first aid class in your community. A basic CPR training may run four to five hours. After receiving CPR training, you’ll know how to respond if an adult or a child goes into cardiac arrest or stops breathing. You’ll learn how to use chest compressions to keep blood pumping to a person’s organs, which can keep them alive until an emergency responder can arrive. First aid and CPR training can also include education about how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

What is first aid training?

With first aid training, you may be able to help save a life. First aid training can teach people who are not medical professionals how to help a sick or injured person in crisis before an ambulance arrives on the scene. Most commonly, first aid training helps teach you how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

First aid training can teach you how to respond in a variety of emergency situations, including:

  • Asthma attack
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Burns
  • Choking
  • Diabetic emergencies
  • External bleeding
  • Heart attack
  • Poisoning
  • Neck, head or back injury
  • Stroke
  • Seizure

First aid training classes may be offered by professionals who are affiliated with the Red Cross, which offers online, in-person, and blended training classes. First aid classes are also often offered through local recreation centers, city services, schools, hospitals and private companies.

What do you learn in a first aid course?

First aid training gives you a variety of lifesaving skills for responding to many different emergency situations. In a first aid course you’ll learn about how to examine someone who’s been hurt, how to use a defibrillator, how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and how to control bleeding and trauma. Some courses include pediatric first aid as well as adult first aid; helping a choking infant, for example, is different from helping a choking adult. Although you can take CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) courses separately, most first aid training includes both.

In a first aid course you’ll also learn how to respond to:

  • Wounds, including punctures, cuts and hemorrhages
  • Heart attacks, chest pain and respiratory arrest
  • Bone fractures, sprains and torn muscles
  • First-, second- and third-degree burns
  • Poisoning
  • Choking
  • Bites and stings
  • Hypothermia or frostbite
  • Shock and seizures

How long is your CPR certification good for?

In general, CPR training sessions and certifications are good for two years. After that, you must recertify to ensure you are up to date on the latest information and techniques. CPR is a lifesaving skill for a community member, employee or healthcare provider to know, as it enables you to respond appropriately if someone goes into cardiac arrest or stops breathing. In a CPR training, students learn compression techniques to keep blood flowing to the body’s organs if a person’s heart has suddenly stopped or they have stopped breathing. This action can keep a person alive until an emergency responder can arrive on the scene and can effectively save a life.

The American Red Cross explains that re-certification is important, because people start to forget information just a few months after taking a training. The American Red Cross recommends you keep your skills fresh by reviewing free, online materials or downloading their free, mobile app to keep abreast of CPR information and news. Re-certification courses are shorter than first-time CPR training. Your renewed CPR certification will be good for another two years.

How much does it cost to get CPR and first aid certified?

First aid and CPR trainings are available to individuals who want to learn how to respond in case of an emergency and for healthcare providers who need to renew their certification. Typically, CPR certifications are current for two years. Here are some examples of average CPR and first aid training costs:

  • Open enrollment training: $45 for an in-person American Heart Association Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider CPR Training and Certification.
    • Additional $15 for online or hard copy student manual.
  • Online trainings: $45 for the American Safety and Health Institute Blended First Aid training.
    • The student will still be required to meet a CPR trainer in person to receive their final certification.
  • Worksite trainings:
    • $35: per employee for basic ASHI CPR AED training course (focus on CPR, 2-hour course).
      • $280: Minimum fee for an instructor to appear (at least 8 students or minimum fee).
    • $45: Per employee for an ASHI First Aid CPR AED training course (includes response strategies for most emergencies, 4-hour course).
      • $360: Minimum fee for an instructor to appear (at least 8 students or minimum fee).
  • Class extensions: Pricing varies depending on the additional emergency training requested. For example, for the ASHI First Aid AED CPR training course cited above, the host company might charge an additional:
    • $5: Per student for infant CPR training.
    • $15: Per student for oxygen administration training (add 30 minutes).
    • $15: Per student for bloodborne pathogen training (add 30 minutes).
  • Materials: CPR and first aid training courses may have additional fees for hard copies of manuals. Example of additional materials costs:
    • $10: Per hard copy of class manual (otherwise available online) for First Aid AED CPR group trainings.

How much do first aid courses cost?

First aid training courses vary in cost depending on what’s included, from basic first aid to cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to pediatric CPR, as well as the length of the class and who’s offering them. The national average cost for an in-person CPR and first aid class is $50-$75 per person. An informational CPR training costs less than one that leads to first aid training certification. For example, a two-hour course that trains you to administer CPR and use an automated external defibrillator (AED) costs an average of $35 per person; an employer may book the same class for a group of at least eight students for an average of $280. A four-hour CRP and AED training costs an average of $45 per person and $360 for at least eight people. Some companies offer add-on training to their CPR and AED classes, such as $5 per student to learn infant CPR, $15 each for oxygen administration training, and $15 each for bloodborne pathogen training. A first aid certificate is valid for two years.

How do you get your first aid certificate?

To get your first aid certificate, you must take a first aid training course designed for certification. Certified training professionals offer courses to employers, schools or other groups. For an in-person training, you may go to a training location such as a Red Cross classroom, or a professional first aid and CPR trainer can come to you or your office. Most first aid training courses take three to five hours or more, which prepares you to take the first aid certification test. To boost your chances, you can take online practice tests or review study guides. Once you pass the first aid exam, an official digital certificate is emailed to you. You can also have a wallet card or printed certificate sent to you.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.

So far, I've really enjoyed taking lessons with Juan. He has all the qualities of an effective teacher - friendly, patient, good at breaking down concepts, technical competence, etc. What I appreciate most about Juan is his ability to mold his lessons around my specific interests and make sure that I'm making progress in the areas that matter to me most. I look forward to continuing my learning with his lesson plans!

I enjoyed my trial lesson with Meng a lot. She was friendly, knowledgeable, and most importantly, she was incredibly patient with all my questions (and I had many!). She also explained her lesson plans which sounded very comprehensive but not overwhelming. As I had no prior music training, it’s certainly helpful to have guidance on the many areas that are important to playing the piano, some of which I hadn’t even thought of before. I plan to continue the lessons with her and look forward to the results!

At first, We were skeptical about our 7 year old daughter taking remote lessons for piano especially with no experience or enthusiasm of her to play it. Looking back now, even though it's only been couple of months, We can see her progressing from reading simple music notes to playing variety of songs. Big thanks to Wade! As a teacher, Wade is very patient and good at breaking his teaching methodologies down so that anyone can understand them. He also structures the lessons systematically from the beginning until the end and make sure sends notes post lesson for the reference. Each lesson covers practice, correction and fun learning, keeping our daughter interested and motivated. Wade is friendly and creates a wonderful environment that our daughter is always excited to practice off lesson hours and ready to impress him in upcoming one. Our daughter is very lucky to have him as her Piano teacher. We highly recommend Wade!!

I have never had a signing and voice lesson before. But boy how I fortunate I was to find Rae. She is beyond wonderful. She is so focused and always knows the essence Due to the distance, I only had my lessons online with her, but it didn't effect anything. I learned so much from her, and I hope I could actually meet Rae in person sometime in the future. Right after the first two lessons, I already felt I was able to tune in and be more conscious of what I was doing in a total different way. She has this grounded, radiant presence, that always guided me to be more centered, and trust myself to explore and learn how it is to sing in a different, elevated way. I learned more than just singing, and hey, it is never "just singing" to begin with in the first place. I guess what I'm trying to share here is, the value of her lessons are never about the techniques, it is about getting into the right mind set that's also the essence of many other things in life.

I originally decided to take voice lessons because I had developed a fear of being heard. Basically, I "lost my voice." I wanted to overcome that fear and enjoy singing again. Rae has been amazing and incredibly patient with me. She has really been helping me work through my anxiety and pushes me every lesson to be braver. I can definitely say Rae has been helping me "claim my voice" again, not only with singing but in other aspects of my life as well.

It was an overall amazing experience to learn from Ricardo, he was understanding, thorough, and very kind. The lesson took no more than 3 hours and there wasn't ever a single minute in those 3 hours that was the least bit boring. Learned many many new things at this class and hope to come by here for recertification in the near future!

Our 10 year old started piano lessons with Max a few week ago and we are very grateful. Our daughter is engaged and feeling so proud of what she's learned so far. Mara is everything we wanted in a vocal coach. I have a wild fear of singing so I wanted a vocal coach that’s not just talented but kind and patient and Mara is not only incredibly thorough but she is SO nice and immediately diffuses any nerves you might have. I learned so much in just our first lesson. She’s an absolute gem and so accommodating. We were lucky to find someone so skilled and with such a warm personality. You can’t go wrong :)

David is an impeccable instructor! He is scientific in what and how he teaches, takes great care with his students, is extremely knowledgeable, professional, inspiring, prompt, responsive, and has a wonderful demeanor conducive to learning. I have played and received instruction on other instruments (recently and throughout the years), but I am a beginning student (piano mixed with some voice) with David. He has taught me critical skills for efficient and effective learning and practice (to me, this alone is HUGE), which are rooted in his extensive research and experience. I have learned to methodically build my ability to play a piece of music (the concept of sets, building sets, comprehensive execution on sets, interleaving, spaced repetition, to leverage inspiration and energy levels to make progress), to strictly analyze my music and playing, to journal my practice, and to approach my music in an acutely aware/focused/structured fashion geared towards achieving results. In vocal training I have applied these skills as well, and I have also learned additional methods to build my abilities (breathing, bracing, projection, to work through lyrics with a variety of tactics, how to deconstruct and then reconstruct something seemingly too complex for me). Each lesson of mine adheres to the structure of theory, scales, and playing of pieces (both small pieces, and short-term and long-term goal pieces) that I have prepared for the week; this is just the combination for me. All time is spent wisely; and as each lessons plays out, David is acutely focused, incorporating his methodologies all along the way, testing my understanding, discussing practice and performance (how-to’s, and including mental practice, etc.), discussing health, providing reasoning for everything that we do, encouraging goal-setting (pieces that inspire including lofty ones, 40-piece challenge to encourage reading and exposure to new pieces), and encouraging me to ask any questions that I may have. I greatly appreciate that in lessons I am significantly challenged to think and work quickly (so as to improve my ability to play quickly). And should a question come up outside of lessons, David is very quick to respond and always generously provides extensive information. In addition to the opportunities to play pieces cold at each lesson, David offers other invaluable performance opportunities in the form of studio classes (performance plus critique), recitals at a variety of venues, and the chance to come with him to play the Sing For Hope pianos. These also serve as wonderful opportunities for inspiration and exposure to pieces that one might not have heard of before. I personally walked away with pieces new to me and that have inspired me to keep striving to achieve! I can say undoubtedly that David and his comprehensive methodologies have given me the tools to correct where I have gone wrong in the past and to quickly make progress which I otherwise would not have been able to. He provides the instruction and guidance of which I had always hoped to find, and I greatly recommend him to anyone no matter the age or the range of experience! He will make sure you know how to efficiently and effectively learn, practice, master, and perform. Nothing is left out, you just have to execute! :)

Taking singing lessons was really going over an edge for me. It was something "other" people did. I had put it off for decades because I didn't want to appear silly. It was just wishful thinking; part of my secret self. I couldn't have been in better hands with Barbara. She met me exactly where I was at and made me feel comfortable. I had wished to sing one song well. Working with Barbara turns out to be more than that. It's more about expression, finding my voice, playfulness and feeling the song. It's really a growth experience.
