Our scheduled tech wasnt able to make it so rather than cancelling they sent us another guy who came in from manhattan....all the way to queens! Even with a long trip like that he was only 30 minutes late which was amazing! Not only did he install the 2 a/c units we hired him to do he also helped my husband drill holes in the wall and hang a curtain rod over our balcony door. We will definitely use these guys again.

Great experience. Jamel and his partner Steven did a fantastic job mounting our new 65" tv. Price was great. Service was great. They also assembled my garage shelf storage that was sitting unfinished for months. That task alone took over 2 hours but he only charged peanuts. They also fixed my garage light that was hanging on one screw (for free). They also do flooring, painting and other house work. Very glad I found Jamel. I'm putting together a honey do list and will be calling back soon!

Mike has done work on the outside of my house (such as garage door, gutter, and fence) and the inside (such as fixing kitchen cabinets and drawers, doors, and plumbing). He is responsive, reliable, and explains things so there aren't surprises. He is a great "go-to" person and gets the job done in a timely manner.

Alex and Elizabeth, his wife, fairly priced out the job when viewed and per my description, and was hired to paint our Livingroom, Up and Downstairs Hallways with numerous doors, laundry area and closets – soup to nuts. That included repairing smoothing out any damaged walls, seal and re-tack trim work, strip, and stain and seal 2 staircase rails etc. Alex and his crew, politely and respectfully came to work, on time, every day, ready to work. Work is neat, clean and professionally completed, within the time estimated. We have additional projects for which we plan to use Alex and Elizabeth.

Pep Menendez who is the owner of Ultimate Overhead Doors is a Great guy. He knows the working of the garage door system like the back of his hand. He is very knowledgeable and knows exactly what the problem with the garage door is and how it can be fixed. I felt very comfortable talking to him and explaining my concerns. He diagnosed the problem quickly and fixed it in a very short time. He has expertise in the Lift Master garage door opener system. I will definitely recommend him to all my friends for servicing their garage doors.

Sonny came in and went over everything in detail. He suggested things that I never thought of! Jonathan painted my living room, dinning room, kitchen, bedroom, doors, trimming and hallways in record time! The price was even better! I can't believe how a fresh new coat of paint can change my entire house. To say that I'm impressed with their work is an understatement! I'd definitely recommend them. I interviewed 6 other painting companies and I'm so happy I chose them!

Wellington offers excellent customer service and did a wonderful job painting our doors, cabinets and trims- mostly made of real wood. That presented some challenges, but Wellington still finished the job on time and we were happy with the result. We highly recommend him. Thank you Wellington!

We contacted Global Housing with a painting project of our 2 floor home. In addition to the walls and ceilings, the painting project included various types of stubborn wood trim\moldings and doors that were previously stained. Additionally, making the project a bit more challenging was that we were already moved into the home with our furnishings and had new wood flooring previously installed. James was very responsive from the initial contact and throughout the project. Anytime there was a concern raised by us he quickly responded and handled the concern with ease. The painters themselves were extremely polite and professional. They were careful with covering the flooring and furnishings and really went above and beyond with the quality of the work and even in recommendations. Upon the completion of the project, James reassured us and encouraged us to not hesitate to contact him should we see something that we were not happy with or if something was inadvertently overlooked. We would wholeheartedly recommend Global Housing Contractors and would work with them again without hesitation. Mr. & Mrs. Rios Roselle, NJ

I have nothing but 5 Stars for Padro's painting service. Pedro and his team were very polite, respectful, professional, punctual and they did an outstanding job and delivered in the time agreed that we agreed upon. Pedro made my very imperfect walls looks brand new. In addition, Pedro was also a big help with helping us choose the right colors for our house. He did a full house painting and we could not be happier with his service. Our walls, baseboards and doors have been beautifully painted and it is very refreshing to look at. Thank you Pedro and your team for your fine workmanship, it was a pleasure working with you! I highly recommend Pedro Mora's painting service.

The work is outstanding and beautiful painting. They did our walls doors and trim, and touched up the ceiling beautifully. And it was well worth what we paid: such a great price! Thank you so much for your work and I will definitely recommend to others.

Denis helped me install my new garage door opener I purchased from Home Depot. He was fast! I went inside for not even 10 minutes, when I got back he already had the old opener down and ready to install the new one in place. I plan on having him replace my garage doors themselves in the future. A+ Service.

Im very happy with the company, they did an awesome job on my garage floor. The Epoxy stands out great, even the process is so different than other companies. He used the big grinder to sand down the floor & then he did the epoxy. The owner is very humble & honest with his work. Kelvin ( his employee ) is also honest & very helpful explaining his work. Im very satisfied with their work & i will used them for future projects! Im glad Luxury Painting gave me hope that great work exists still.

Union County Professionals is a reliable, budget-friendly, trustworthy family run business. We recently hired them to paint three rooms in our house including a large living room, the kitchen and the guest room (including the trim, baseboard and doors). The owner and his son met with us a few days prior to starting. They were courteous and professional, listened to our needs and gave us a fair time and cost estimate for the project. (Having just renovated our entire house we know how rare these qualities can be when dealing with contractors, painters, etc.) On the day they were scheduled to start the job, the painters showed up prepared and on time. They were careful not to damage our furniture and our floors and the paint job looks amazing! The lines are clean, there's no blotches and they finished on time and on budget. I highly recommend this company!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you fix a broken garage door?

Garage door problems don’t have to mean the end of the world. Garage door repair is typically a one-day process and can be done for only a few hundred dollars. Common garage door repair requests include fixing slow or erratic garage doors, addressing strange sounds coming from the garage door or motor, fixing cosmetic damage such as dents or scrapes, repairing broken doors that are stuck open or closed, and troubleshooting inoperable doors.

The two main garage door operating mechanisms are sectional roll-ups or tilt-ups. Garage door repair services can fix single-car, double-car or RV-height doors. Your garage door may be made of wood, steel, aluminum, masonite, vinyl, fiberglass or another material. The type of garage door repair you need really depends on the type of garage door you have and the issue at hand. Garage door repair pros often charge a flat service call fee to diagnose the problem and provide an estimate. For customers who choose to have the repair done, the service call fee may be applied to the first hour of labor (including time to make the diagnosis). If your garage door is under warranty, the repair may be free of charge.

Who repairs garage doors?

Garage door repair is a specialized job, which is typically handled by a garage door repair service. Professional garage door repair technicians can test or repair a garage door system and fix cosmetic blemishes on doors. Common requests include help with jammed or inoperable doors, slow or erratic doors, unusual sounds, dents or scrapes on the door, and general system testing. Garage door repair professionals can work on single-car, double-car and RV-size garage doors.

How do you choose a garage door?

When garage door repair isn’t an option — perhaps the current door is beyond fixing or you want to upgrade to a quieter, more energy-efficient model — it’s time to buy a new one. But choosing a garage door is not as simple as it sounds, even when you know the right size for your home. A wide range of materials, styles and finishes are available, and each factor influences the cost. Garage doors are made of aluminum, steel, vinyl, fiberglass, masonite, wood (typically cedar or mahogany), or a composite of several materials. They may be insulated against cold or heat. Traditional and modern styles include raised panel, carriage house or crossbuck. Most styles have window or arch options, and are available in different wood finishes and neutral colors. Because garage doors account for a large part of a home’s exterior, their appearance is usually a homeowner’s top priority. An attractive garage door can increase a home’s curb appeal and resale value.

How much does garage door repair cost?

When a garage door goes off the track, the spring breaks, the door is dented or the garage door opener is on the fritz, a professional garage door repair specialist can help. The cost to have a garage door fixed varies, but the national average cost of garage door repair is $70-$110. The extent of the damage and the size and material of the door will affect the final cost. A garage door repair company generally charges a national average of $80 for a service call, which includes the first hour of labor and service, such as testing and inspecting the garage door and opener. Apart from labor, the garage door repair costs hinge on buying replacements parts. For example, a new spring costs an average of $60. Expect to pay several hundred dollars, though, if the door is beyond repair; a new garage door ranges in price from $200 to $4,000, and most homeowners spend an average of $800-$1,200.

How much does it cost to install a new garage door opener?

Your new garage door opener cost will vary based on the model you purchase and how long installation takes. Typically, installation pros charge by the hour, although if the pro is also selling the garage door opener they may have a flat fee for the product with installation. The national average for new garage door opener costs (with installation) is between $390 and $650, although the national average cost for the opener purchased alone may be in the $150-$300 range. The three most common types of openers are chain-drive, screw-drive and belt-drive. The chain-drive costs the least but makes the most noise. The belt-drive is typically the quietest and the most expensive. You can expect to pay about the same amount for installation for any of the three styles. The lifespan of a garage door opener is approximately 10 years, depending on quality. A pro may provide opener repairs for the cost of their service call fee or they may charge a flat fee, such as $100 for opener repair. Here are some examples of new garage door opener average costs, including installation:

  • Contractor-grade garage door opener with installation: $300.
  • Chain-drive opener with installation and one remote: $350.
  • Belt-drive opener with installation and two remotes: $400
  • Top-of-the-line opener with ¾-horsepower battery backup, belt drive and nearly soundless operation: $475
    • The majority of higher-end garage door openers are “smart” products and will connect via app to your smartphone for remote access.
