Having met Dr. Anna is one of the best things that's ever happened to me. I had been in therapy for over a decade with various counselors, but now I know the difference between a therapist and a Therapist. She is warm, compassionate and creative, no two sessions are the same, and she seems to have an incredible repertoire of techniques at her disposal. She is always goal-oriented, makes sure that results are really happening, and always explains everything so clearly as you have never heard and never understood before. She has the greatest sense of humor, her academic knowledge is amazing, and her fine-tuned sensitivity boarders on the mystical. Yet she is always funny, down to earth, and real. I've never laughed so much in therapy sessions before! :-) I am so grateful, ... because I am finally discovering what "free" and "happy" really mean!

It has been an amazing journey. Brent is very smart and sensitive. He has always been present, and never pushed for any "not-ready-yet" process. The conversation can be really deep if you dare to explore; psychotherapy is about challenging yourself for inner awareness and change though, so I've gladly taken that. And most importantly --My words, feelings and emotions were always seen, heard and held (instead of being packed up and thrown away). The procedure of change is so painful and scary, and I've experienced a lot of disconnections before with other therapists, but this did not happen with Brent, and I take this as the most precious part of him. We struggled a little bit at the beginning for a schedule that worked for both of us, considering my REAL crazy working hours, but that's all I can think of (for a semi-complaint). The experience turns out to deserve all the efforts.

I've been struggling with anxiety and anger issues since teenage years, and have tried therapy in the past but never stuck with it because I always found myself getting impatient with the therapists or the process. However, Dr Eskalyo slowly but efficiently helps me realize the benefits of psychotherapy, by digging deeper into my subconscious mind. She never makes me feel judged, or pressured. Scheduling is flexible, which works with my crazy work schedule. She's also very cooperative and patient with paperworks for my insurance. I highly recommend Dr Eskalyo, especially for those who are skeptical but would like to try therapy.

I have been seeing Stefan for 3 years now, and I can honestly say it was the best decision I ever made. He assuages any fears that one might have with going to therapy, or from what they might fear from traditional therapy. When I first came, I was an unhappy person, not liking myself very much and projecting that feeling to everyone around me. I blamed everyone else for my problems, while thinking I truly had a handle on things...as things around me were just getting worse. Learning to not only unconditionally love others,but to unconditionally love myself has made me a better father, a better friend, better in business, and an all around better person. I completely recommend seeing him to anyone who wants to learn how to love themselves more.

What are the types of psychologists?

What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

  • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
  • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
  • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
  • Overcoming addictions.
  • Managing chronic illness.
  • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.

How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.
