I've been learning from Dom for a bit shy of two months now and have been loving every minute of it. While I'm a neophyte on guitar, my mother is a music teacher (guitar/piano/voice) and I grew up with vocal coaching at various levels, so I have experience with a variety of music training. I found Dom to be incredibly responsive; as other reviewers have touched on, he starts from the very beginning with vital information that I merely glossed over when self-teaching other instruments, but he will quickly amp up the pace of your lessons to your speed of learning. At this point, I leave each lesson feeling challenged, but I come into the next week with enough understanding to grow and meet the next batch. I'm also taking bass lessons with him once a month, and the sessions dovetail nicely into each other. He has a wealth of music history and experience at his disposal and you would do well to take advantage of that. Also, he has two of the sweetest cats I've come across in a while, so there's that.
I've always sung and I took lessons with top rated voice 'teachers', but they really weren't teachers; they were really coaches and stylists. Rae de la Cretaz is a true pedagogue. She is a teacher of rare abilities...a vocal genie if you're lucky enough to find her. Unlike, coaches, she will custom build your voice from the ground up. I thought I knew the basics, but I soon discovered after uttering one note in front of her, that I knew nothing. Here I had been focused on style, placement, phrasing...only to discover that I really had never even mastered how to really breathe, and that so much of singing is breath work. How so much of great singing is 'getting out of the way' of your natural voice. (Easier said than done). I also never realized how mentally challenging it is to learn to sing correctly. So, here's the deal. If you have a voice, you need to treasure it, and make sure you use it properly so it stays healthy all through your life. Rae will give you that. When you sing, she has her eyes closed, and can tell you exactly what you did in your body that hampered that perfect note. She knows where you were holding tension in your body, and she'll be right every time. Unlike many people who call themselves teachers, she doesn't just let you sing all the way through. She will stop you over and over and correct you until you're producing the right sound. She's tough, precise, and amazingly perceptive. You need to surrender your ego at the door, know that she is committed to your being the best you can be, and allow her to do her magic. Soon, you will be able to identify what you're doing wrong, and fix it yourself. But you must surrender to her teaching technique and have patience and faith. For that, you will be rewarded with a healthy rich voice that responds to your mind like a Porsche grips the road on a hairpin turn. If all you want to do is be told how great you are and sing songs through your whole session, Rae isn't for you. If you're passionate about being the best singer you can be, and you want vocal mastery, and you're eager to learn a powerful technique, then Rae is for you. Her teaching is universal, and you will be amazed how quickly you improve regardless of your repertoire. Classical, pop, rock, Broadway....it doesn't matter. Her methods are genre agnostic....Watch your range increase, watch how your notes float out of you as if they have a life of their own, watch how your resonance comes alive, learn to feel when it's right instead of listening for it. You will identify yourself as a 'singer' with confidence in the consistency, reliability, and health of your voice. Call her. She's also a very nice person, and easy to talk to. She's won't lavish you with gratuitous praise, but she gets very excited when you get something right. And you'll know it. One caveat: it took me two or three lessons to learn how gifted a teacher she is. That's because it took me a few lessons to surrender my ego at the door.
Mike Shapiro is one of the best teachers I have ever had, period -- and I've had a bunch of good ones in various academic subjects. He is an outstanding communicator, his teaching methods WORK, and he sincerely cares about his students' progress. Add to that that he's a great guy, and you get the highest rating. Oh, and his rates are affordable, too.
Thank you for a beautiful wedding! Ivan has an extensive repertoire and played everything perfectly. He was prompt and professional, and could easily charge much more given the quality of service he provides, but I'm grateful that he was affordable! It was nice that the music was one less thing to worry about on my wedding day. I can't recommend him enough.
I'be been a bass player for 30+ years and I recently decided I wanted to take my playing to a higher level. My musical theory / knowledge has never been as good as it should or could be. I started taking lessons with numerous "Bass guitar" teachers but they were more focused on technique and that's not where my skill set was lacking. I found David First on Thumbtack and since he was located close to where I live, I decided to try him as my teacher. Long story short, best musical decision I've made in a very long time... David isn't a "bass guitar" teacher per se', he's a MUSIC teacher and that's exactly what I needed. He's extremely competent in his knowledge of theory and he's a very patient teacher. He's got a very chill, Zen vibe about him which makes studying under him very easy and peaceful. I can already see a major improvement in my understanding of what to play, when to play it and why it works as a result of our lessons. If you're looking for a great music teacher, I highly recommend David First.
Mara has been teaching my ten-year-old daughter for about 10 months now. My daughter loves Mara's classes and looks forward to them all week. Mara is engaging and helps Isabella to focus. She does age-appropriate exercises with her to warm up and then to tone Isabella's voice. She is open to teaching songs that capture the interest of my daughter. She is flexible about scheduling and available at different hours of the day and even on weekends. She is prompt at responding to emails and texts. Mara is a pleasure to work with and my daughter absolutely adores her. I can't recommend Mara highly enough.
Pamela was first recommended to me by another voice teacher whom I had studied with. I was recovering from an extended bout with laryngitis and had become worried that I had hurt my vocal chords. At that session, Pamela carefully guided me through exercises and by the end of the lesson, she established that my chords were fine. That was well over a year ago. I am consistently impressed with her ability to hear exactly what is needed to bring the full voice to the fore. I have been studying voice for over thirty five years and have had wonderful teachers along the way, yet Pamela has introduced me to work that I have never experienced before. As a result, my voice is more free and robust than I thought possible. Pieces that used to be difficult to negotiate I now sing with ease. She is consistently generous and focused on the work. I highly recommend Pamela to any student lucky enough to work with her. Oh, and I like her name too!!!!
I used Michelle's service to get my 9 year old daughter a singing teacher and could not be more thrilled with the result!!
After years of studying classical voice and still having technical difficulty, an accomplished singer suggested I study with Christine Moore, who is now teaching me to sing more fully and freely. While former voice teachers were well intentioned, professional, had good reputations, and taught me vocal concepts for over 35 years in weekly lessons, I continued to struggle with the passaggio and lowering my larynx in the higher range. Christine immediately understood my vocal issues and, most importantly, within a very short period of time was able to teach me techniques that have dramatically improved my vocal production. My husband and I are amazed at how much my voice has improved since I started studying with Christine only one and a half years ago. One important concept that Christine introduced me to that previous voice teachers didn’t explain is how to sing with proper vocal cord closure. Apparently, I was over-blowing breath through my vocal cords and wondering why I never had enough breath to sing a substantial aria. Christine also taught me the concept of “appoggio” (breath support) and I’m finally feeling a stronger foundation of lower body breath support that gives me the freedom to release my shoulders, head, and jaw to sing freely. Improved cord closure and breath control is helping me to produce a much larger voice than I ever thought I had. In fact, prior to learning these concepts I thought I was a mezzo-soprano and it is now very clear that I have a fairly large soprano voice. What I have learned about Christine is that she takes her work very seriously and expects her students to do the same. She has never canceled a lesson, chooses challenging and appropriate repertoire, arranges student recitals, teaches summer workshops in Italy, continues to sing professionally herself, and encourages her students to set goals and to perform. Additionally, she is a genuinely nice person, not the prima donna type you might expect of someone with so much talent and experience as a performer and a teacher. Honestly, I’m not someone that enjoys writing (I’d rather sing) but I wrote this review about Christine Moore because she really made a difference in my singing. I can only imagine how my voice would have developed if I had started training with a voice teacher like Christine earlier in my life. Maybe someone reading this will find out!
Francis is an AMAZING piano teacher. He is so patient and very knowledgeable. My son loves to play piano with Francis. We are very happy to have found him.
Sean is an amazing musician. Furthermore, he teaches music theory in a proper way. He is a good music teacher.
Gregor is a wonderful violinist and a thoughtful musician. As someone who has worked with him on and off for years, I'm positive he'd bring the same qualities into his studio and pass his love of music on to his students.
Josh is an incredible teacher. He is patient, encouraging and yet challenges your current skill level. He fits his teaching to your tastes in music but adds a new dimension through his dazzling playing skill. My wife and I went to one of his shows recently at Bauer's Listening Lounge and had one of our best 'date nights' in a long time. We soaked in the groove of his quartet for a couple hours, thoroughly enjoying it. I actually chose Josh in part because he is a performer not just a teacher. I have had teachers that do not perform and found them to be uninspiring. Josh is everything they were not. He is also very accommodating of your schedule and I love that he comes to my house rather than making me drive anywhere. I am much more at ease here which is important to him and to me. Clearly I can't say enough good about Josh because I am SUPER happy with how far I've come under his guidance. I am sure you will be happy with Josh. Give him a call.
Dave has been a wonderful teacher! I am a novice pianist and the lessons and homework assignments are tailored for my ability and progression. I never feel like I am being expected to do more than I am capable of. Dave is also a pleasant person to speak with, which is an added bonus, and extremely knowledgeable! I would recommend people of all ages and skill levels take lessons from him. Thank you Dave!
Viky is very friendly and a great teacher for both piano and singing. I highly recommend her.
Kino is my piano teacher. She's not just professional but really cares about students. I learn faster with her because she's patient to me. I enjoy her class a lot.
Before I started I was a bit sceptical about Skypr lessons, but after my first lesson with Floris I was convinced. I'v been taking lessons with Floris for two years now. We usually meet once a week, but when I am not available he's really flexible about moving our lesson to another time or skipping a week without charge. I have learned so much from my lessons. I started as a total beginner and now I can comfortably read music and play chords. The thing I love most about Floris's lessons is that he really shows me how to learn on my own. For example, I wanted to learn a particular Adele song, and in stead of looking up the sheet music for it, he taught me how to learn it completely by ear. And now I have the tools to learn many more songs by ear!
Drew is an exceptional musician and teacher. He is adapt at making abstract musical concepts concise and easy to understand. Drew also has a way of making challenging techniques feel less intimidating. Anyone who can make barre chords feel comfortable for a student is an excellent teacher!
Corinn has taught my two daughters (13 & 15) piano and voice for the past 3 years. She is the best teacher we have had and we are thrilled that she has moved with us, by sheer luck, from London to NJ! She is extremely reliable and conscientious and is a talented and patient teacher who challenges my girls as individuals and has helped improve their skills tremendously. They look forward to their lessons with Corinn and feel as very comfortable with her. She is a very talented singer and pianist and is passing on her love of music to our daughters. We feel very lucky to have her influence in their lives.
I have been taken lessons now with Alexa since March. I really enjoy working with her, she is very knowledgeable, patience, she really makes our 1 hour lesson fun! I have had other teachers in the past and she really stands out! Thanks Alexa!
To whom it may concern: Jacob Sayraf has been teaching my 10 year-old son Steven the guitar and vocals for over a year and a half now. He has been a wonderful teacher, and my son has made great progress under his tutelage. Before he met Jacob he didn't know how to play the guitar at all. Jacob is also sharing with Stevie a wealth of songs from a broad range of folk, country, rock, pop, and standards. Some of these include: "We'll Meet Again", "Bad Bad Leroy Brown", "Blue Moon of Kentucky", "House of the Rising Sun", "Blue Suede Shoes", "In My Life", "Hot Tamales and Theyr'e Red Hot", and "Don't Worry, Be Happy". Stevie is getting a sound musical education through Jacob. Jacob is doing a great job of not only teaching Stevie the guitar, but also the theory of music behind it. He gives Stevie homework, which Stevie dutifully does. Jacob also goes out of his way to borrow sheet music books from the library so he can lend them to Stevie. Most importantly, Stevie has a lot of fun with Jacob and always looks forward to his next lesson, which to me is a sign of a great teacher. I would definitely recommend Jacob for any teaching position you have. Sincerely, Jeffery Ringle
